Penrice Castle Cottages - View from the driveway (Martha's Cottage is off-road so lovely and quiet)

Penrice Castle Cottages is a collection of holiday home rentals in Gower, Swansea, South Wales. My…read morehousemate and I were down there just a few weeks ago for a wedding at a nearby hotel and decided to rent a local cottage rather than stay at a hotel. We rented Martha's Cottage on the Penrice Estate. It was absolutely lovely- picture attached of the outside but the inside was quirky with a lovely country feel. It was cosy and warm and we loved the quietness of this place (it is set back from the road). However, what was best about our trip is that if you rent one of the Castle Cottages, you get access to walk through the incredible Penrice Estate- complete with derelict castle, acres and acres of beautiful scenery, and a very impressive listed building worthy of Pride and Prejudice. It is completely gorgeous, and you can look down on the sea too. Nearby is Oxwich, where you can walk to from Penrice, down through the estate and then down over the dunes to the beach. Just stunning. We had a very easy booking experience with Penrice Castle Cottages, they offered us a weekend rate rather than a full week's rental. They were also very helpful afterwards when I found I had accidentally left something at the cottage afterwards. I would highly recommend- this area is just outstanding in terms of landscape, and the cottage (complete with log fire) was just up my street. I'd like to come back sometime to this magical place.

Penrice Castle Cottages - Martha's Cottage, where we stayed. There are, however, a ton of other cottages on offer with varying sizes- see their website.

Penrice Castle Cottages - Log fire. Can't ask for better than that! Just make sure you know how to get it started before you get there... no wifi.

After reading steeps review yesterday morning and needing to do the weekly shop we decided to head…read moreover to Bryngwenyn Farm and shop there. Bryngwenyn Farm is just as steeps writes and in a beautiful spot, I would definitely recommend its' location for a peaceful getaway with its' holiday cottages and b and b with the great advantage of the fabulous mainly organic farmshop with wonderful proper organic and freerange eggs(delicious for breakfast today). As well as doing a good shop there, we bought the aforementioned sausages, pork etc some wonderful organic vegetables, we had delicious home made cake and tea so definitely a step up from the usual supermarket venture.

Bryngwenyn Farm is many things in one. The part we go for is the Farm Shop. We were pointed here by…read moreout neighbours and decided to visit one Sunday afternoon. It is a bit off the beaten track so we had never seen it before, but we were pleasantly surprised. The shop itself is tiny, but still seems to hold plenty of goodies. There is a freezer full of meat (including the best sausages we have ever tasted), a fridge packed with cheese, yoghurt, milk and more, another freezer with bread, icecream and frozen fruits, a fruit and vegetable section and then shelves full of everything you can think of. They even stock Ecover products so if you are looking to avoid the supermarket, this is the place to go. Their home-milled flour is well worth a try and makes delicious bread. The shop is also a cafe and is laid out with a few tables. If you are looking for something different, they sell Alpaca wool gloves and hats! The rest of the farm includes holiday cottages and animals to see as well as the flour mill. I am tempted to sign up for one of the bread making courses. It is in an idyllic spot too with gorgeous views and a posse of sheep to greet you as you make your way down the track!

    Rose Hill Cottage

We stayed at Rose Hill for 3 days in May, 2019 -- it was a delightful interlude in our hectic…read moretravel schedule. The accommodation: Upstairs are two double bedrooms and one room with twin beds. The bigger double bedroom has an en suite bathroom with a toilet, bathtub/shower, and bidet. The other two rooms share a bathroom with a shower and toilet. A kitchen with a dining table, a full-size fridge/freezer, sink, and four-plate electric stove with an oven separates the master bedroom from the other two. The kitchen is stocked with toaster, plates, cutlery, saucepans -- plenty of facilities for in-house meal preparation. Everything is modern and clean -- it's a cozy, stress-free environment. Downstairs is a living room with wood fireplace and comfortable sofas that seat 4-5 people. Alongside is a "playroom" with beanbags and board games, perfect for kids. The area just outside the front door features a large grassy yard that's fenced securely -- an ideal space for pets to romp in safety. Plenty of hot water and radiators in all rooms keep you cozy at night. Lots of fresh towels and extra bedding if needed. Both bathrooms are stocked with plunger bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Fast wifi is provided so that you may keep in contact with the rest of the world (but you may not want to). We were pleasantly surprised to find there was no TV set in the house -- it was so good to get away from its incessant barrage for a time. This would be an ideal writer's retreat with its peacefulness and connection with nature. The vicinity: A large orchard next door affords a tranquil walk and myriad public footpaths lead to delightful glades, brooks, and forested areas that are quite magical. If you're into Paleolithic artifacts, many can be found in the area, most of them less than 30 minutes by car in lush and idyllic settings. The air is unpolluted and the nearby road has maybe two cars a day go past. It's a tranquil and healthy environment. The hosts: Philippa and Dan are available when you need them but will leave you alone to enjoy the place at your own pace and in your own way. They are dog-lovers, so bring along your pooch. Philippa has a trove of stories about dog rescue that will warm your heart and reveal the depth of her soul. Bottom line: Rose Hill is an excellent place to relax and unwind in south-west Wales. It is secluded, rustic, and peaceful yet offers modern facilities with civilization a short drive away (if you need it). We were very sorry to go, but hope to return soon.
