We went to three of the amethyst mines up here in the upper part of Lake superior. This one was by far the best. Very friendly and helpful proprietor, the best facilities, and very good pricing for the gemstones and other beautiful amethyst crystals. Unlike Panorama, there was no entrance fee.
We probably spent at least two hours here, digging through their fairly massive and extensive rock spoils, looking for amethyst rocks. They loaned you trowels and buckets free of charge. Each full bucket, I believe it was a 2 1/2 gallon plastic pail, would cost $25. Out amongst the rock spoils, probably half a dozen locations, they would have stiff bristle brushes and tubs of water to prepare and wash your findings to see if they were worth keeping.
The main office was clean and neat and was full of very excellent specimens for purchase.
The other two amethyst mines in the area are the Blue Point amethyst mine and the Panorama amethyst mine. The Bluepoint amethyst mine had decent prices but was really a dump. There was no main office and looked like a junkyard. The Panorama mine was nice, but also charged eight dollars a person just to get in. read more
