A solid stop if you're spending the week in doco. Overall a very standard bar with a couple standard bar food options and a ton of history. You don't go here for the food. It's the (2nd?) oldest bar in doco and the walls are plastered with memories to prove it. There were a bunch of kids and teens, but I went during the afternoon. It's also become really touristy (I'm a tourist, but a 25-year tourist, so I'm only partially hypocritical). I'll keep to my go-to bar and hit up Ox for an after-dinner beer once a trip to see the decor, chat with the nice bartenders, and force a friend to down a cup of spag chili. read more

A must stop if you are making your way up the Door. From even the exterior you can tell this place is a hidden gem. Inside it is just full of antiques and old-school decor, and the wood all over makes you feel as if you've taken a step back in time. Blue Ox is one of my favorite places to go in Door County! It's right on the main stretch in Bailey's Harbor near tons of other great places. The aesthetic is very cool with lots of interesting antiques and styles. They have games to play and an inside an outdoor component. We have had some basic apps there like chicken tenders and cheese curds and they definitely meet the mark! The servers and bartenders are friendly and on top of things. It's a classic Wisconsin experience and fun for big and small groups. Definitely a great place to play the ring game and get your "I got oxidized" bumper sticker! read more

Adventuring in Door County this weekend and hit up this spot based on a recommendation from the owner of Dodge Antiques in Algoma. The bar is real cool- we had our pup along which was welcome on their patio. We each ordered a burger and holy crap- delicious. Fresh toppings, delicious beef, bun was perfectly light and toasty. A friend recommended going to Blue Ox while I was up in Door County for a day trip. What an interesting and kitschy little dive bar! There's so much random stuff all over the bar, it's like a small museum as you want to walk around and look at everything or you're going through all of the stuff in your grandparents basement. This seems like a popular spot for the older locals as it has a very laid back vibe to it where you can have a good conversation with friends. There are a bunch of low tables as you can order food there. The higher tables have saddles as bar stools. You literally need to...giddy up to sit on one of those lol. The tapped beer selection is top notch as it's basically all of the Door County breweries - yay local beer! read more

Best dive bar in Door County. This isn't for food. I read comments about bad chili a family had. I wouldn't eat here and I wouldn't bring a family here. But I would bring myself here, as well as a small or large group of people. They have pool, darts, and other bar games, as well as a juke box and some quirky decor. The bartenders have always been personable and awesome. The first time I went it was cash only, but since I've been able to pay with a card. For a Door County bar this place was where it's at. Stopped her while on the Door County Trolley Ghost Bar Crawl Tour, so we learned a bit about the gruesome family history behind this place. Apparently it used to be a butcher shop, let's just say someone got a bit carried away with a knife, rest is history. Pretty gruesome. Well onto the highlights, they have a table with an axe chained to it, seemed pretty dangerous for a bar, but ok! They have Rumchata, YES. The bartender Kelso is a total babe. We were recommended to check the Blue Ox out by a family member. We decided it was probably a better nightlife/ drinking place and not a great food place. The service was subpar at best. We were one couple of 5 in the bar, and we had to remind the waitress about our appetizer. The cheese curds and burger were very good though! Don't let the exterior fool you. It's just as eclectic inside. Typical local bar in WI. Adorned with tools, saws, horns, skins and just about anything you can bolt to the wall. A couple TV's on the wall too to watch a game. Ordered a drink and some curds(who doesn't order curds in a WI bar?). Curds were hot and fresh. Drink was well poured. From what I hear they have the best burgers in town. My next trip up I'll definitely stop in and have a burger, with a side of curds, of course. My time at the Blue Ox was one of the most memorable times of my life. Urbanites and F.I.B.s ("friendly Illinois bretheren,") suspend your expectations. This is a true small town Wisconsin bar. There are horns, pelts, farm equipment, arcade games, and other kitchy things all over. It's their world, welcome to it, and enjoy yourself while you're there! The beer selection is very good . . . Capitol, Lakefront, O'sso, and New Glarus. The crowd is a good mix of open-minded tourists and locals. My husband and I stopped in there for a quick bite and a drink before heading to the Baileys Harbor 4th of July fireworks. He had a burger, which he loved. I had a fish sandwich. A little dry, but served the purpose. Of course, we had fried cheddar cheese curds, a must in any Wisconsin bar. YUM! The owners, Jason and Kelso, are super nice. I resisted the urge to ask him if that's his real name or a nickname from "That 70s Show," he probably hears that all the time. After ominous storm clouds rolled in, we found ourselves back here. We watched the fireworks through a thunderstorm on the porch of the Blue Ox, beers in hand. The crowd was singing the Anthem, and a few of us started up "America, F@$ Yeah!!!" What a night! This place is wonderful! Loved the antiques placed all over the place! I ordered the Philly cheesesteak and my fiancé ordered the ox burger. Both were hands on delicious. Burger was slightly better than the philly. All come with a bag of lays potato chips. They had a few of the brewery down the streets beer on draft! I loved Punk Ass Cat, and Pallet Jack was ok. My fiancé also ordered a delicious Bloody Mary that comes with a pickle that will be the spiciest one you'll ever taste! read more

This is not a big tourist spot and I love that about this place! Came here on a Sunday and ended up having the best relaxing time here. This isn't your typical bar, there are many rare items lining the walls here. You could spend hours looking at all interesting things. There is good bar snacks here and good drinks. An eclectic collection of antiques adorn the Blue Ox - a dive bar in a 100+ year old former butcher shop. Food is typical for bar fare - the burger was very good. Simple, but tasty! Service was ok - bartenders were nice and even though it was not busy, they just kept to themselves and didn't mingle with any of the patrons. Beer was ok. Nothing special here. They could take the opportunity to serve it in a frosty glass....even a chilled one. SOMETHING to add flair and differentiate them from every other standard bar in the area! The beer selection in itself is pretty small. The music...ugh. Again, here is another opportunity to match the decor to a "sound" that would elevate the ambiance to the next level. This place is so cool and unique inside, and one would expect to hear a range of Bluegrass to 70's rock, or maybe some older Country music? Not Adam Levine!!! By all means, stop in. My experience was made by the bartender, who doubled up as the cook, and was fully honest and thorough about the dinner options in Ellison Bay on a busy Memorial Weekend. Kelso the bartender absolutely ROCKS THE CASBAH. You can even have your beer growlers filled with New Glarus! And we did!! He cooked the burger medium-rare -- which is hard to find nowadays -- and it was cooked to perfection. The cheese curds were delicious. The fact that the Blue Ox is decorated with antiques and sports memorabilia does NOT qualify the place as a "dive bar." I know dive bars and they don't charge $18.00 for pitchers! That being said, grab a pitcher of Spotted Cow and have a seat on the covered front porch and watch foot/vehicle traffic pass you by along Route 57. We returned for burgers which was reasonably priced and fairly sizable. There is outdoor seating, however, the owners need to pitch the plastic seats and spend some money on real outdoor dining furniture. The Blue Ox has a few old school video games and is adorned with Packers (boo) and Cubs memorabilia. I'd also expand the beer selection a bit, but otherwise, no complaints. A must see. read more

Wonderful staff! Even though their patio was not yet open for the season, they accommodated us and our pups for lunch. They brought water outside for our pups, let us sit on the patio and even let us order them plain hamburger patties with no bun for our pup's lunch even though it isn't on their menu. They checked on us several times even though we assurred them we did not require additional sevice after their accomadation. I had the pulled pork sandwich and my husband had a burger.
