Finally ready in August after frequent back and forth. End of August an accountant friend recognized an $8000 ish error. They filed income in Alabama instead of Mississippi. We were not Alabama residents when that money was removed. The woman at DESK tried to tell us no error was trying to keep us from talking to accountant. They finally admitted mistake and said they would amend. Checked later on amendment and told would have to wait till after Oct deadline for late taxes ( which included ours). About a month ago got letter from Alabama gov that I owed tax $$ with penalties and fees. And an underpayment, which they calculated wrong. Sent letter back to AL gov saying they were being amended. Thought there might be back log. Just got registered letter. $$$ DUE. Spoke with my financial advisor who said about 15 of his clients facing similar issues and for me to give up on them doing amendment and have my new accountant do it this year. Now I'm paying to correct their mistake. I tried to email the poor accountant who started our process. Couldn't find her email address. She probably quit. I am not a complainer but this sucked big time. Zero rating for me too.

As a local business owner, I understand the importance of customer service and the value in "word…read moreof mouth" and typically would never leave a negative review without first having a discussion with the source. However, my experience with Hough & Co. has been exceptionally stressful and expensive. Fortunately I have a bookkeeper who manages both my business as well as my personal finances. She basically keeps everything organized, manages all the data entry in Quickbooks and then shares the ledger with the accountant once per year to file our year-end taxes. Believe me, she's worth every penny. (Even the Hough & Co. accountant commented on her organizational skills upon seeing my business's QuickBooks, and asked if she takes referrals.) Yet, having her provide accurate documentation in a timely manner never seemed to expedite the process or elevate any costs for his CPA services. Honestly, since 2018 my taxes have yet to be filed on-time despite my best efforts as a client. Delays occurred often in the 3 years of working with Hough & Co. Tax extensions were filed on my behalf and my business was changed from an LLC to an S-Corp filing without any prior explanation or authorization/my approval. (Although "it may be in the best interest of the business", it's ultimately a decision for the owner to make - not an accountant.) The last and final disappointment came (June 2022) while in the midst of acquiring financing for a mortgage and undergoing the underwriting process (which as a self-employed, single individual can be challenging and stressful in and of itself); I learned that yet again my previous year's taxes were not ready to be filed. Unfortunately, due to the urgency of the situation I didn't have additional days or weeks to wait for financial information that was shared with Hough & Co. back in Feb 2022. At the time, I already knew I'd be forced to expedite documentation (once again having to hand deliver my taxes to the IRS). It became very apparent I needed to make a decision and I sent an email notifying my accountant at Hough & Co. that I would be taking my financials to another firm to ensure deadlines and responsibilities would be met. At which point, the accountant reacted defensively to my decision; stating he felt very insulted by my email, followed by calls from his office - as though the situation was personal. It wasn't personal, it's simply business. I hired him to do my taxes, and after realizing he was unable to complete them in a timely manner, it was necessary to make a change. (For the record) Less than 48-hours of our meeting, the new accountant was able to complete and finalize both my business and personal taxes and I'm grateful to announce that I was able to close on my home. Hough & Company's inability to properly communicate or follow through on commitments was unfortunate, yet receiving a $2000 invoice for those "billable hours" without providing the work he was hired to complete is not exactly ethical; yet will be paid (because karma is real).

When I complained that the price had ballooned to a much higher cost, she agreed to reduce the price by $20 and her explanation was that my return involved more work than was anticipated. This was not true since we had that pre-return sit down earlier during which I had fully explained my specific tax situation and she understood what was involved.I also thought it strange that if the upcharged price was legitimate then why would she then lower it by $20 ? It sad to think that even CPA's pad their bills. Follow the old adage, "get it in writing"
