A few suggestions if you have to deal with these folks. 1) Record any and all phone calls you have with them. The state of Virginia is a one party consent state. So, as long as one of the people involved in the phone conversation (yourself included) is okay with the conversation being recorded, then it is perfectly legal to make a recording. Basically in Virginia you can record a phone call or in person conversation without telling the other person that you are recording as long as you state either prior to, or after the recording, that you yourself were okay with the conversation being recorded. 2) Don't fall for their fear tactic of telling you that having a medical debt will negatively affect your credit score. The truth is earlier in 2023 it became illegal for the three major credit score companies (FICO, TransUnion, & Equifax) to count any medical debt less than $500 against your credit score. So if this company is trying to collect a medical debt from you and it's less than $500, just laugh when they tell you they will report your debt to the credit bureaus. They can report it all they want, but legally, the credit bureaus can't hold it against your credit rating.
