They said the battery was looking a little puny, but not bad ... but the alternator must be shot. Want to buy one now? My wife is as smart as she is good looking (that is to say: very very), so she hired me to take it to a mechanic. Since we only own Toyotas, we don't HAVE a mechanic - the cars just don't need 'em. But there's 150k miles on the van. Thinking we need to find a good shop for future use that isn't the competent-but-expensive dealer. So I looked at Yelp, talked to a few friends, polled a couple of other sites and decided on Larry's. Larry did some sleuthing and decided that my battery isn't quite puny, yet not quite new, either - but not time for a new one. And the alternator is FINE. Don't get me wrong - AZ is great in its place, but so glad we got a second, more learned opinion. Larry's shop cleaned the battery terminals and the throttle body and did a couple of other possibly-related things. He said all that stuff was related to remedying whatever was behind the check-engine code, but couldn't guarantee for absolute sure he'd solved the problem. He said the code isn't critical and probably not even useful for my trim level and engine, and his little tweaks likely solved the problem. But we should keep an eyebone peeled for future flashes. And since my visit, no more check engine light, even for a sec. Believe I win. $60. And peace of mind. And I got to play tug-o-war with his dog. Wins all around. Go there.

New in the area, I asked around and a co-worker told me about Tommy and Mike at Prestige. He filled me in on their history and about their quality. I took the old truck to them and told them what I needed. In general, I needed a good inspection and a reliable truck for another several thousand miles. After an afternoon of inspection and test drive, Tommy called me back with a laundry list of items (most of which I expected and some that he said I didn't need). I OKed the list and the estimate. He called me back one more time with recommendations that were found during the other work. Everything was within reason and the price and timing were on target. After I picked up my pickup (pun intended) it runs better, rides better, drives better and after two weeks of driving, my mileage is better. Everything was repaired/replaced with OEM parts which makes me happy as the original part had held up very well for many miles. I now have a local mechanic I can trust and a truck I can depend on. He claimed he couldn't perform diagnostics due to a "low battery," then later said we needed spark plugs and ignition coils for $750. After keeping our car for over two weeks, he suddenly told us the entire motor was bad and we needed a $7,500-$8,000 engine plus $2,200 labor. We got a second opinion and had the car towed back. Experienced mechanics immediately saw that NOTHING had been touched -- the dust, wiring, and parts were all in factory condition. They started the car in two minutes with a simple $55 mass air flow sensor. The motor was never bad. We demanded a refund for the $250 he charged, and he returned it only after we showed video proof. We are also requesting he return the $150 diagnostic fee because he did not properly diagnose either vehicle -- our Nissan OR our Toyota. This situation could have put us in serious debt. Please be cautious. Always get a second opinion, and do not rely on his diagnostic or repair claims.
