Ensuring we grabbed a decent meal before the night ahead we chose here. The majority of reviews…read morewere nothing but glowing. On arrival it was manic but agreed to wait for 15 min on the side for a table. Overseeing the bar I caught glimpses of waterdowned cocktails being prepped and sent out cementing my decision not to try one. After 15min we were led down a busy stretch of faux tucs tucs and a seated against a a wall crowded with loot stuck to the wall. The menu had plenty to offer from dim sum, Thai fishcakes lots of variants of sea bass and all Thai dishes you could think of catering from meat eaters to vegans. I adore bubble tea so was madly curious to try a alcohol variant which was a boozy salted caramel. My other half ordered a havana rum. My partner received whisky rather than rum and mine was full of so much tapioca it spoiled it. For food my partner had the har kau prawn dumplings and pineapple rice with prawns. Myself pork sesame skewers along with prawn red curry. We both enjoyed the starters lovely texture and flavours besides the unhappy lettuce. Unfortunately the mains were weak. We had eaten pineapple rice in our weeks and Thailand and wanted to experience that same tastiness. It was just plain rice , under cooked veg and big prawns on the side.. not rice laced with pineapple etc.. my red Thai curry was more of a soup with basic flavour with also undercooked veg. I like to have some bite but not like this. The prawns were cooked nicely . Not once did anyone ask about our wellfare or food quality. Drone like they cleaned tables with lighting speed and took food orders churning the fast tables over. Overall very disappointed with despite the service charge they whacked on not very attentive and poor food quality.

Really looking forward to this authentic thai street food experience, passed by the day before…read moreafter we had already eaten and on our way back to our hotel, seeing all the steaming dishes from the window, decided for our last night in Nottingham, we needed to come here. It was also located right round the corner to our hotel! On walking in, feels like you are entering into a little bit of Thailand. The welcome was friendly, with cute little Thai children, playing near the front, waving and smiling at you! We were seated at a table near the front of the restaurant but at the back, they had seating in tuk tuks, which seems to be for larger parties, or for four diners. I also noticed a railway track going through the restaurant. The restaurant filled up pretty quickly after we arrived after 6pm. Service seems to be hit and miss though. Took some time before our orders were taken, then when our food arrived it was lukewarm, not, as I noticed, steaming hot, like other diners were. It is probable that our dishes were prepared, but they had forgotten to bring it to our table, as our drinks took some time to arrive after reminding them twice, as they had not even arrived after the food arrived. The starter of Spicy Payaya Salad came at the same time as the mains. This was actually very spicy despite being told it was mild. I only like a hint of spice so was too much for me, but my partner like extra spicy, so great for him. Quality wise, I would not say the food was the best I had, it was quite average, and since my Prawn Pad See Aew was cold after a few mouthfuls, it felt like eating a cold soggy mess, their was no crunch in the vegetables and the noodles were more like short pieces of pasta, and not much prawns to speak of. My partner's Pad Gra Tium Prik Thai with marinated beef, was ok too, nothing to shout about either, again this was also cold after a few mouthfuls, as I watch other diners' enjoying their food, with constant steam swirling from it. Since there were no waiters in sight for quite a long length of time, we decided to eat it anyway. If food is supposed to be served cold, like salad, then you would expect it to be cold but not if food should be served hot, so this is disappointing. For dessert, we ordered the Khow Niew Ma Muang, sweet sticky rice and mango, topped with tapioca red bean paste, and sprinkled with seasame. Now, this was a delight, the sticky rice was so unexpectedly hot, it burnt the tongue! The mangoes was the right kind of ripe. Lovely. Also, what they did well is the coconut water. This is really the real thing, with bits of coconut and so satisfying and refreshing, that we ordered it twice! We were just unlucky with the service of our mains, did not come hot and fresh, or quickly, but would try them again on our next visit to Nottingham.

The Nipa Thai restaurant is part of the Barton Marina Complex and is quite a large spacious…read morerestaurant with high ceilings and magnificent decoration throughout; it even has a small waterfall running through the centre, which makes for a magnificent backdrop to an evening's dining. The restaurant could probably seat at least 70 people comfortably. They have a fixed price buffet lunch menu, and a sizeable menu in the evening, including set meals and a myriad of other dishes. There were 15 of us with varying tastes, so everybody chose independently, either with individual dishes or to go with the set meals - A,B,C or D or varying price, the cheapest being around £20 a head. They roughly went up a £5 per person as you ascended the alphabet, the latter two being for a minimum of 4 people. I however, shared Set Meal V with a colleague, the vegetarian set menu (£20.50 per person); I am no vegetarian by any means, but its always a good test of a restaurants credentials to see if their vegetarian food matches up to the rest of the menu. Lets just say I was most impressed! After perusing the menu and the waiter taking copious notes of our order, the starters arrived very promptly and thanks to some most impressive note making, everybody not only got the correct dish, they was also given directly to them, very impressive. Our mixed starter was a real triumph, won-tons, battered vegetables, vegetarian fritters was some of the highlights, all accompanied with a rather spicy fresh salad, resplendent with chilli seeds. A great start; other starters included spicy broths, chicken satay and a plentiful basket of won-tons in a potato bird's nest. All dishes on the menu had a guide to spiciness, one, two or three chillis, whilst most dishes had none. Some of our party were brave enough to try the three chillis, quite warm apparently! Our main courses, of which there were four as part of our very impressive set meal, were mixed vegetables in an oyster sauce (a good accompaniment to the other dishes), mushroom, cashews and vegetables in black bean type sauce, tofu in a the most wonderful sweet and sour sauce and spicy Thai green curry packed with crunchy vegetables. All fantastic dishes, but the tofu was a real highlight, the accompany sauce was wonderfully flavoursome. All washed down with a couple of bottles of Singha. What a great restaurant: attentive service, a relaxed atmosphere, good company and some of the best Thai food I've had for a long time.
