Not for actual tax work -- just for the privilege of finding out if you qualify for more meetings. Already we're off to a strange start. I called the office hoping to speak with an accountant. No accountant. Instead, I got a gatekeeper who immediately launched into an intake questionnaire that sounded long enough to qualify for continuing education credits. I'm sitting there thinking, "Are we filing taxes or applying for witness protection?" Then another staff member texts me asking me to confirm my phone number and email address -- information they already had, because they had just used both of them to contact me. Then finally comes the email inviting me to schedule a paid 30-minute appointment. If this is the process just to say hello, what happens when I actually need help during tax season? Do I have to solve riddles? Collect stamps? Get a note from a notary? I'm sure they work well for some people, but for me the entire experience felt unnecessarily complicated and oddly impersonal. Between the intake process and the hefty consult fee, I felt less like a customer and more like a job applicant.

It actually made a $40,000 error in 2024... treating a 1099 electronic transfer from a plain vanilla ESOP to a Schwab IRA as income despite the 1099 including "no tax". Despite numerous attempts to amend this return thru Turbo Tax, i will send in my own amendment. Even before the error described above, i was going to stop Turbo Tax based on all the time needed to use it. I actually have a pretty simple tax situation, and i need something more transparent.

My experience with this accountant was extremely frustrating and unprofessional…read more Over the course of 2 months, I was repeatedly told that my tax returns were 80% done or would be finished "by the end of the week," only to discover later that no progress had been made. I followed up respectfully every 2-3 weeks to check in, but was accused in an aggressive email written in all caps "DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!!!" and of bothering him every 2-3 days. The tone of that communication was unprofessional and unnecessarily hostile, especially given the delays and lack of transparency throughout the process. His excuse was always that he has over 400 clients to "deal" with. Reliability, honesty, and professionalism are the minimum you should expect from a tax professional, and unfortunately, those were sorely lacking in my experience. On April 15 I gave him an out by specifically asking if an extension would be filed, and was told it would be. As of May 10, I have no confirmation or documentation that this was ever done. The lack of transparency, dishonesty about the timeline, and hostile communication made this an extremely stressful and disappointing experience. I would not recommend this accountant to anyone seeking reliable, respectful, and professional service.

I had 30…read moreminute meeting with him discussed I would need a tax return for Utah and Colorado- I would have capitol gains from selling two properties and depreciation recapture. Marcus said no problem would probably cost around $1,000 and he would have them filed by April 15th. Wanting an update I contacted Tanner front desk the last week of March since I hadn't heard from them and left messages 3 different times that week for Marcus to please contact me with estimate of taxes owed (I knew I would owe $40,000 plus to Irs). Marcus never contacted me. All I wanted was a text or an email or a phone call but he couldn't be bothered (no one there could even return a call). Finally less than a week before April 15th my husband called the Tanner receptionist and said we wanted our tax documents back. My husband picked them up that day and all Marcus had to say was for us to file an extension - he hadn't even touched them. Filing the extension would have prevented us from getting the state of Colorado tabor refund of $1,600, which might not sound like much but when you are going to owe over $40,000 every little bit helps. There was no apology he didn't even care. My husband and I had to quickly take our info over to another company who worked very hard to get them filed by April 15th. Whatever you do don't go to Tanner or work with Marcus. They don't care about regular people. I guess we were just small potatoes to them.
