This location is tiny! And there's no mobile phone reception so make sure to ask for the wifi password if you have to wait. More importantly: Arkin is a hair wizard. I explained that I needed a long lasting style to take me through a dinner that night in London (Tuesday), a conference the following day (Wednesday), and a flight to Phoenix (Thursday). I was a tad sceptical at £46 but thought screw it, highlights can be fixed easily, it's hardly a haircut. I went in on a Sunday and Jelena was my stylist. She was excellent! Did a great job with the highlights, made them nice and thin, made sure the colour matched the rest of my head. The young girl even gave me a free treatment. The owner was in the salon too, chatting away to everyone, telling us about his trip to Vegas. One thing to note, there are two small pug dogs in the salon but they stay out of the way and aren't smelly or anything. If you don't mind that, definitely check it out. I've already booked my next appointment.

Quite a long review, apologies!…read more This is my first time ever writing a review, which I hope goes to show how much I was not satisfied with my experiences at Hair and the City. While the woman who cut my hair was lovely, the standard of the salon and the way my hair now looks have made this one of the worst salon experiences I've had. I went to the salon recently on a LivingSocial voucher, which was for highlights, cut, conditioning treatment and blowdry. Perhaps it had to do with being on a voucher? Regardless, here is a list of what I experienced below: -When I got there, the salon was incredibly hot - and when I say hot, I mean BOILING - but because there were animals in the salon (that's right, a dog and some uncaged bird were sitting directly next to me the entire time I cut my hair. Is that even hygienic?!), they could not open any doors/windows. From that alone, I couldn't wait to leave the establishment; I couldn't even focus on what my hair looked like! -No music was playing the entire time - not a deal breaker, but again not the best experience. -After checking in with reception, I was not offered a drink or a magazine - and I was not offered either of these until about 45 MINUTES into my haircut. Certainly not standard in a salon experience. -The salon itself is quite dilapidated, with cracked mirrors (the mirrored area by my feet at the salon station was completely cracked but not taped over), cracked walls, dirty and with wires showing everywhere. -The woman who did my hair was lovely - very nice and we had a good briefing. We discussed giving me just a bit more than a trim and just maintaining my long layers. As for the highlights, we discussed a VERY subtle gradual lightening towards the bottom, with lighter ends blending in to my natural hair colour (what I already had, just maintained). -However, what I ended up with is bleach-blonde looking ends (my hair is light brown naturally) that begin half way up my head, with some parts higher than others. It's completely haphazard and very streaky. The actual cut, too, is no better; MUCH shorter than discussed and also very haphazardly cut. It's aged me by about 10 years and looks, for lack of better word, trashy. I now need to pay to have it redone to look a bit more professional and, well, normal! -The lighting in the salon made it very difficult to see at the time (it was lit by natural recessed lighting, which at 4pm is not very bright). I was also not offered a personal mirror to examine, so it was only what I could see from the large mirror in front of me. So, at the time, I couldn't tell just how streaky the colour was until I went home and could properly see. -Other notes: the 'conditioning treatment' offered in the voucher was actually the hairdresser spraying my hair with leave-in conditioner (I only realised this later when I queried with the salon how I was not given a conditioning treatment). -Hygiene concerns: the scissors she used were sitting on a towel COVERED in someone else's hair that were sitting there when I first came in (and thus I can only imagine were used on someone else). She dropped a comb a few times on the floor and would pick it up and use it in my hair again. Plus the animals out in the open with hair cuts happening. Maybe it was just me but I felt that a bit unhygienic. Needless to say, I have called and asked to have my hair fixed. I now need to spend ages commuting back into Greenwich (nowhere near where I live/work). While I think Hair and the City has great potential - and as I said, the woman who did my hair was lovely - this salon is in major need of some higher standards and better quality colours and cuts. Just be wary if you are going on a voucher.

John ( gorgeous ) deals with the joy that is my hair and he does it well. I don't even need to tell him what to do, he just knows. He also cuts my Mums hair and she travels from Surrey but won't go to anyone else. The salon staff are friendly and though everything from the music to the decor is supercool it is not intimidating. A haircut is a necessity but is also a pamper and this place is a short term escape. They say women are more loyal to their hairdressers than their husbands..... Sean Hanna is well worth a visit!

The atmosphere is spot on, with really friendly staff and lots of places to sit and relax while you wait for a nail technician to become available. There is a food and drink area which has a small menu offering cakes, quiches, juice, alcohol, tea and coffee. Unfortunately, you can't book in advance so, unless you arrive at a very quiet time, getting a coffee and flicking through magazines seems to be pretty much part of the experience. The usual prices for nails and hair are quite reasonable, considering that this beauty parlour is run by the same company behind Cowshed. They don't offer a full manicure, so at £10 for a shape and paint (with a free bottle of nail colour to take home) I'd say it's fairly good value if you just want a quick fix. Having nail art will vastly increase the price - especially if you're like me and prefer to have the whole set done - it's £1.50 per nail! My experience was somewhat marred by the sullen attitude of the woman doing my nails. However, I think I was just unlucky, as the other nail technicians seemed really chatty and nice. Don't get me wrong - I'm not expecting for someone to actually feign interest in my day, but a little bit of interaction and friendliness doesn't go amiss! My nail art also looked a bit amateurish, so my advice would be not to bother having nail art - it bumps up the price of your manicure and the options are fairly limited. For a special occasion, or before a big night out, this is a fun place to come with a friend. You could eat lunch or have a coffee depending on the waiting time, and after your treatments you could have a go in the 'selfie studio', which is free to use. Despite its name, I think you'd have to be a bit pathetic and vain to go in there alone!

I seem to have had a totally different experience to the previous two reviewers!…read more Initially I decided to get my hair done there, as I'd just come out of hospital and couldn't figure out how to have a shower without getting my stitches wet. They washed and blow dried my hair brilliantly twice and were charming, helpful, and the whole experience was lovely. After having such a great time with the hair side, I thought I'd get my nails done. I've had two manicures so far, which are just simple polish jobs, but it's been lovely, my technician has given me a little hand massage with each manicure and I've left with perfect nails, and super soft hands (I need to get some of their hand cream...) Did I mention that they let you take the polish home with you?? Yup! You pick your colour and get to take a lovely fresh bottle of gorgeous polish home with you. All for £15! I mean, seriously, how can you not be excited by that?? PS: They definitely do appointments now (a previous reviewer said they didn't)

While I understand that a positive Covid case is out of their control, I cannot believe that the MUA found out they were positive at 4pm in the afternoon. Assuming the MUA called out sick that day, they should've given me a call (not send via email) earlier in the day and/or tried to find an alternative artist. With just an hours notice, I didn't even have time to go out and purchase make up. I'm still waiting on the refund from my appointment. I would not recommend their services!!

Staff were rude, doing each others nails and eating at the stations. The technician had no idea how to blow dry or curl and tried to redo my hair TWICE! I left almost in tears and went straight to Toni and guy. I paid to redo my hair there and they said they get a lot of clients who need to be redone from blow Ltd. then I got my makeup done st the Bobbi Brown and both of the staff members told me about their awful experiences. All that to say... don't waste tout money.
