I called in yesterday to my local, and most recently opened, branch of the blowdry bar, at the Holywood arches. I haven't had the chance to get to a hairdressers in so long, and a proper cut was well overdue. I work 2seconds walk from this branch and after finishing on a half day I thought I'd treat myself after finishing. I was greeted almost immediately, and my name and request was noted down. A colour and Cut.
After being kept half an hour I noticed there didn't seem to be any 'Senior' stylists, none which looked any older than 19-20 years old anyway. There were two customers already in the chairs for this time I waited.
When I was eventually taken to a seat, my hair was inspected by a member of staff all over at the roots. I was then 'told' I would be having a full head of bleach highlights. My hair is naturally a dark blonde/light brown, and I had about 1inch of regrowth through a fully dyed head of high-lift tint and some almost grown out bleachy highlights (from over a year ago).
I explained to the Stylist that I did not want bleach on my hair as I have been trying to get my hair back into condition for the last year after changing its colour alot in a short space of time. I asked her to use a high-lift tint instead, as I have been using this on my hair for over a year, and although it wasn't bright blonde, it was less harmful to my hair. The stylist was foreign which proved difficult to exchange conversation. She then called upon a very youthful looking stylist who came over and reiterated that I could not have a tint as my hair would go 'ginger'. I told this stylist my own previous hairdressers had been using tint on my hair for more than a year, and it was anything but 'ginger'. They advised use of this as it is less damaging than bleach.
The young girl then spouted the usual phrase they are trained to throw out there when a customer questions their work, "...well speaking as a professional I am telling you that your hair will go ginger if I use a high-lift tint...."
Not only was this embarrassing in front of other customers, but this young girl who looked to only have just stepped out of Hairdressing College, had terrible customer service, lacked knowledge in her field and despite being so 'professional', was unable to suggest or use another colour on my hair that matched up with its current shade.
I wanted to become an avid customer with Blow Dry Bar, but after this experience I will not be back. The prices are obviously for a reason, because if every branch has inexperienced, rude staff like this little lady, the recession will not deter people from paying higher prices in more Professional salons, to get a better job done.
It is not the 80s, it is 2012 and there are other shades of blonde out there and not everybody wants bright platinum white bleached blonde hair like the usual chavs walking around.
After walking out and refusing to let them bleach my hair, I had my hair tinted in Colour Keys, High Street and it has turned out a lovely colour of natural looking blonde. For £10 extra it does pay to have a professional do your hair for the correct advice, treatment and finished product! read more
