You can certainly buy some nice simple flowers to perhaps brighten up the house, but I wouldn't recommend them if you're after something more special (I would not be pleased if my boyfriend gave me flowers from here). But flowers aside, Garlands is simply wonderful if you're after a gift, but don't quite know what to buy. They sell a wide variety of items including; posh crockery, vases, photo frames, clocks, toiletries etc... all of which are highly unique. As Cardiff is sadly lacking a Cath Kidston, I was most pleased to discover that Garlands stocked a small range of this brand, which is better than nothing. It's amazing really! This greengrocers sells some of the loveliest fruit and vegetable that you'll find. It makes such a nice change to be able to walk into a shop and see earth and leaves and think, oh yes, that's right, vegetables come from the ground! And apples grow on trees. It's all too easy to forget this when you're just picking up plastic bags of fruit from the supermarket. The service here is wonderfully friendly, and they never fail to stock beetroot and rhubarb when I want it most. Satisfactory indeed, my friends. This is a definitive cockroach shop, in a good way! If only Laura's was in Penarth instead, then it would pretty much be perfect.

The busy displays and bright colours capture something of the market stall atmosphere, even when it's raining outside. They even manage to have the right smell: far away places mixed with a slight musky aroma. For yourself or for gifts, this is a truly charming shop where you'll not be likely to go too far wrong. It's a very friendly space, and a joy to pop into regularly, or at least stare longingly through the window. Unique. Ish.

It's a lovely shop, well stocked with environmentally sound products that have all been sourced from fair trade companies. I set up projects in India, when I was in my twenties, for Trade Not Aid, the non exploitive trading arm of The Body Shop International, and so I am keenly supportive of all who operate with the same ethos. But, even if I wasn't, I would still shop here. They have a great kids section as well as plenty of affordable high quality gifts for adults. The cards are pretty good too. The people who run the shop are lovely too. It's always really peaceful, and you are allowed to browse for as long as you like without interference, but help is on hand if you need it.
