One of the worst experiences in Iowa city !!! Love the location and the proximity to downtown, but…read morethe place overall is just horrible. We went to do laundry and after running the washer, we opened it up and somehow a bat was in the washer. Not even a week later there was another bat flying around in our room!! Ants are everywhere, and I can't even enjoy a good home cooked chipotle meal without ants crawling up into my bowl. Mice are everywhere and had to put mouse traps everywhere. Overall, the condition of the house was horrible and I would never come back.

This is for 318 E Jefferson St. Iowa City…read more WARNING: If you are planning to EVER become pregnant, do not rent this apartment. There is lead paint in the kitchen cabinet doors which rubs off and drops into the food you are preparing. A fresh coat of paint on top (the owner's proposed solution) will do nothing to fix the problem as paint on a friction area like tight-fitting cabinet doors will wear down to layers below. Lead can be absorbed into bone which is later released when you're pregnant causing permanent damage to a developing fetus. The apartment was filthy when I moved in. From walking around barefoot for an hour, my feet were black with dirt. I told them and they directed me to a mop and bucket in the basement I could use to clean it. I mopped the entire apartment three times and the water was still black. The fourth time it was gray. There was also food splashes all over the cabinets and walls in the kitchen. There were crumbles of paint in all the windowsills and paint chips on the floor around doors and windows. The gas was not on when I moved in. It was not turned on until the eighth day of my lease term and I had to request a reduction at least four times before they were open to discussion. The kitchen sink was leaking water out onto the counter and underneath the sink every time I turned on the water. This took a few days to fix and I was left with a kitchen covered in metal dust after they fixed it. I tested the paint and it came out positive for lead. I was crushed remembering all of the lead paint dust I had to clean up when I first moved in. It is also in the kitchen cabinets so that whenever you open them, lead dust falls in the food you are preparing. The rubbing cabinet doors make it so that even if they paint over it, the lead paint will eventually be exposed and start falling in your food again. I alerted them to the chipping lead paint and lead paint in friction areas creating dust. They proposed having a guy come in here to do some work who was NOT lead certified. This would have made it worse. These apartments are advertised as well-maintained but they are not. Let me give you a few other examples. The glazing on the exteriors in my windows is falling out and nonexistent in places which means they have not been painted in probably over fifteen years. They leak out heat like crazy. The wood floors have not been redone in an age to the point that they are rubbed bare in large areas. The linoleum floor in the kitchen is so old that it looks dirty even when it is clean. The "gardens" outside are overgrown with weeds and poison ivy. The poison ivy was even creeping onto the pathway where I walk in. I alerted staff a few times about the poison ivy (also throughout "gardens" of their other houses) and nothing was done about it until I came home one day and saw that the poison ivy had been weed whacked and the poison ivy was strewn all over the lawn. This company is going to do the bare minimum to get up to housing code only if you insist and will not go beyond that. I chose this place because I liked the idea of supporting the preservation of old houses, and I thought by paying above market rate that I would really be getting a great place, but this house is not being kept up and should not even be rented in the state it is in.

I've been here for 13 days now (of a 14 day stay) for a work conference. I didn't choose the city…read moreor the hotel. But I've been pleasantly surprised. The staff is super nice and they greet you often. The hotel lobby is very much in a school theme, as is much the room and general hotel decor. There's also a consistent Iowa theme. One of the elevators was broken during my entire stay. That seemed odd. One of the days the other elevator broke and we needed to walk up to the second floor to use the service elevator. This was the worst thing about my experience here and it was not very Hilton. The room was Iowa and Filed of Dreams and Gene Wilder (an Iowa alumni). The decor is fine. The room has a kettle for tea. I know they had coffee makers before, which I would have preferred. The housekeepers come at different times every day. But they emptied trash, made the bed, and stocked new towels. That part worked fine. The hotel doesn't have gift or sundries shop. There is a bar/diner and a coffee shop adjacent to the hotel. They're both fine. This hotel isn't the newest or the most well equipped. But it's fine. The unrepaired elevator is pretty bad, and some people would find it unforgivable. It certainly was a negative. The rooms are clean. The TVs are a decent size. I used my iPad more than the TV. It's a decent place with a college vibe in a city that revolves around the university. It was a decent place to stay. It's clearly not five stars It's closer to 3 than 4. But the nice people who work here, Gene Wilder's college ID as my room card, silhouettes of Willy Wonka and an Oompa Loompa above the beds, and embracing Field of Dreams makes me feel more fondly about the place.

Our only problem here was that there was an extremely loud party across/in the hall by our room our first night there. We did get a different room for the second night and had no problems. I like that there is an outlet and shelf by "my" side of the bed. That seems like a small thing but it is a very uncommon amenity and it REALLY makes my life easier and is much appreciated. Decor is whimsical and interesting. Room has a fridge, I always like that. There is a cafe here with fantastic coffee drinks. Also, I got a hug from Branford Marsalis here but I can't guarantee that others would be so fortunate. If we come to the Stop/Time festival in the future - and we probably will - we absolutely will stay here again.
