I then asked a fairly straightforward question about my situation (liquidating funds to buy a house this year) and whether I needed to speak to someone, and she quipped, "What's that got to do with your taxes for this year?" I explained this, and her response was that they were short-staffed and booked anyway. Very pointless, rude conversation. Made an appointment on the website. Showed up and nobody was there, the office was empty at 2:30 on a Wednesday (I had taken time off work for this). Called the only number I could find for them and the lady at the call center could do nothing. Ended up using TurboTax. I will never use Block Advisors again. read more

I have used H&R Block Auburn, California for more than 15 years. Frank Sydowski is an excellent advisor there who is knowledgeable, professional, efficient and understanding. With children off to college, I relocated to the SF area. I used Block services in Millbrae and was not satisfied because the young gal did not know what she was doing. I was put off twice because she left to attend to her private matters and then my calls were not returned, not even by other staff or a supervisor. As well, both of the offices of H&R Block are not open during normal business hours: Mon-Fri: 8-5 respectively. I went back to Frank Sydowski at H &R Block, Auburn, California. He knew exactly what to do. He had my returns completed in a jiffy. However, I had to return to Auburn weeks later to attend to business there and was met with the owner's wife's corralled dogs next to reception that never shut up. My animal was with me and did not say a word, she laid there at my command ignoring the incessant yapping of the in-house dogs at Auburn H&R Block. Furthermore, I paid $300 cash and used my credit card to complete the transaction. It was very embarrassing because the representative had trouble figuring out how to split the money for payment of each return I was paying for. I will search for a different tax preparer within the region where I live for next year's filing, unfortunately. read more

The staff at this location are all super friendly! The receptionist greeted me, asked if I would like water or coffee as I waited. I'm used to just being told to sit and wait. I had a nice tax pro named Elisabeth work with me to complete a complex tax return (stocks, domestic partnership, and other deductions) and she was able to get it all done and explain the whole proces to me in a way I can comprehend it all. I called them and first of all very nice over the phone, answered all my questions politely. I called Liberty tax because H & R was booked and I didn't want to wait. After speaking with Liberty tax I would never go there they were so rude! So I came in 30 min early to my appointment at H & R block and they happened to be ready for me, very nice! She always calls me with deals she thinks may apply to my return, sets up appointments for me, reminds me when to show up, and makes the entire process easy and actually fun. She even discovered an error had been made by another tax preparer the previous year and for no additional charge to me filed an amendment and now I will receive additional money from last year! My experience here definitely did not live up to the reviews. First, my meeting started a full 15 minutes late. During that time, two advisors were gossiping openly in front of me about a coworker. When I sat down with the advisor I was meeting with, she seemed not only unwilling to help, but actually unwilling to have my business. She was unprofessional, at best; rude and condescending is closer to the reality. There was a lot of shrugging, eyebrow raising, and "Well, it depends" in response to questions (for which she had context). I'll be taking my business elsewhere. read more

However, not only did I have a useful and free discussion with Nina, but after I got home, she sent me an email detailing some further research she had done, which provided additional information. This is our 3rd year in California and our 2nd year going to Elisabeth C. Timmermans, EA. She is very knowledgeable about everything, and has completely cleaned our records with the IRS We had come from Miami with lots of tax issues (bad accountants), being audited year after year since 2007 and contractor jobs that made pay stub mistakes between FL and CA taxes, mixed with the $8000 home owners credit that was no longer a credit since we moved out of the home...and the list goes on and on. She worked with us for over an hour, asking all the right questions and walking us through the process. We were so nervous and worried that we would get audited again, but we did not and I could not believe we actually had a state credit this year. She was also very helpful in recommending us a good financial advisor, we had also been burnt in the past from advisors that promise you the world at a hefty fee with no liability if you loose on your investment. If I could I would write dozens of post on Elisabeth since we need honest, nice, knowledgeable and trustworthy people like her. Specially when you are sharing your hard earned future and putting your trust on someone you barely know.
