I only took one trial class here, but I got a really good first impression. There were two Shifus…read more(teachers). They taught some basic ideas about self defense which immediately just made sense to me. They taught some really good techniques to block punches, as well as different ways to throw punches and kicks (which are not what I'd naturally do). They had good mats, equipment, and protective gear to practice these techniques on other people (and I think that's important, as I don't believe that just practicing punching thin air is enough to help train yourself for a real fight situation). They also went over basic ways to try to calm situations down and try to avoid fights. It's a fairly small class (less than 15 students, I think) so you get a lot of individual attention. They were very clear and polite. I decided not to sign up for two reasons: 1. The prices were more than I personally could comfortably afford at this time (I don't wish to state the precise price here, myself, if it's not posted on their web site). 2. They have a rule that all students are required to wear masks at all times during practice. And although I respect caution for Covid, I personally feel that I need the freedom to breathe to the fullest whenever I'm exercising. But I otherwise loved this place a lot. I regret that those two above factors kept me from joining.

People were extremely friendly, encouraging, and supportive. Instructors remembers your name after one class and corrects your form if it's not accurate so you don't hurt yourself and teaches you how to kick/punch better. Even the students there were so helpful as it was my first time and was willing to spend a few minutes here and there to correct my form. Scheduling classes was easy as there is an app to shows the schedule of various classes. Also, the place is clean is because there are no shoes on the mats. One thing I didn't like was that there are no lockers in the changing room and it's just a place to change and store your belongings. However, it was safe to leave your belongings there as you are working out. Would love to go back again!

I was recently trying to rejoin the world of martial arts after a long time of being out of the…read moreloop. I had zero grappling experience and felt like Bjj was the absolute perfect art to fill said gap. I reached out via email and got a quick reply by voicemail and then by text. They were willing to answer all of my questions, even questions about the rates, contract, fees etc. They answered ALL of my questions AT the initial point of contact, which I very much appreciated and showed a stellar level of customer service on their part. So I showed up for my first introductory class, and as someone who's got plenty of experience in martial arts, I was looking for things that might be worth making note off: the equipment (such as the standing body-bags that the kickboxing class use for training) appeared to be in good shape, the mats weren't dusty or with any obvious debris and the place seemed generally to be very clean from the mats to the lockerrooms and bathroom. The instructers were all very kind to work with me and help me to develop my technique and understanding of what it is I'm getting myself into. It was a good class with great people, no doubt. The only thing I didn't like is the hard-sale strategy to sign the contract. That was why I couldn't continue, even though I really wanted to. Had I been presented with the contract differently, it's quite possible I'd be fully enrolled into my first month's classes right now. But they pitch HARD... for example, I wanted to take at LEAST two introductory classes before making a final decision, and I wanted to sleep on it. A 7 month contract (and that's just the ENTRY LEVEL contract which you are likely going to be asked to renew to a year contract in a few months once you're ready for advanced classes) is a big commitment when you're spending $219 a month, which they state is completely inflexible, regardless of income or situation and must be paid EVERY MONTH... no... matter... what... sick? Doesn't matter. Injured for under 6 months? Doesn't matter. You gotta pay). There are ways to get out of the contract, but ultimately, I was given the vibe of "but if you have an issue you will just call the company that handles our payments... they deal with that stuff" Still, this wasn't enough for me to rule me out. I still wanted it and could "kind of" afford it. The issue was that hard-sell. I am a salesman for a living and I can tell when someone is trying too hard to sell something. I see it everyday from my own coworkers and I respect them for it. Honestly I respect them for it here also. They need money. They are a business. It makes sense and there is nothing wrong whatsoever with that. The only issue though it is was the wrong approach for me and I felt like they should've felt my energy on that. I told them I was uncomfortable and wanted to take a second class and make a decision. Rather than saying something along the lines of "go... take the second class... and let me know what you think. If you need more time, that's okay. When you're ready, we'll be here and we'll be happy to have you as a part of the community "(what probably would've had me come back for AT LEAST a month trial). But what actually happened when I said this, is the gentleman seemed slightly disappointed and even slightly frustrated. He then replied, "... cool okay, but if you do this, I would REALLY need you to get back here right after so we can go over paperwork." It wasn't even subtle. It seemed too desperate. I kept replaying this in my mind, as a salesperson, thinking "man they really as desperate to get the sale..." I've seen it hundreds of times. The face when one of my collegues or even I can't close a sale... the emotion behind the reaction. It was all there and it was clear. No denying it. He wanted that paperwork SIGNED and I get why. It's a business, and businesses need money in order to operate. ... but I had to take a star for that... I was not comfortable and was even a little nervous specifically and only because the person working with me had too hard of a sales pitch. It made me decide that maybe this isn't the right choice for me right now and it unfortunately lead to me asking for cancellation before a single business day had passed. But on the plus side... these are all good people. They are trying to run a good business and have a good culture. I'd be happy to be a part of their community and would even recommend these guys if anyone asks. Everything seemed almost perfect about that place. The only thing that didn't work for me was the sales-pitch and the contract inflexibility. I probably woudln'tve noticed any of this stuff if I wasn't a salesperson myself so don't let my words make you look down on these guys. The world needs as much truth as possible these days, though which is why I had to write this review. Gave me some free gear, treated me with respect and gave me a good lesson; give em a shot

I was super intimidated before joining but once I worked up the nerve, what I found was a group of positive, friendly people who are here to learn, to get better at Jiu Jitsu and at life. Many people who train here have recommended it to friends or family, or Windsor Terrace neighbors, and there really is a community feel to it. Teachers - It's a special thing to find teachers who can meet you where you are, be supportive and patient, but who also push you to do better, show up for yourself, set big goals and put in 100%. Different instructors have different styles, but all are all great at breaking down complicated techniques, while encouraging you to think deeper about why something works. Everyone gets equal guidance during class. As a beginner, you will be helped, not ignored. Fitness (physical/mental) - Jiu Jitsu is a very challenging workout and it WILL improve your fitness. Classes include intense bursts or agility drills and you will sweat and your heart will pump! But it engages your mind as well as your body. You start to think about things like anatomy and leverage and gravity (even if you don't yet know how to put it all together). No treadmill workout is going to give you that. Heart - Sun Dojo encourages you to take the principals you learn on the mat into the rest of your life. What could you do with more self-knowledge, courage, discipline, less ego and a healthier body? I know I want to find out! Special shout to Professor Laurel who was my first contact at Sun Dojo and who really helped (and still helps!) to ease me into things.

The basic classes are gentle (i.e. you won't get injured), but challenging enough to improve overall fitness and to make some widely applicable self-defense techniques second-nature to the students. An unexpected benefit at Sun Dojo is the attendance of some advanced students in the basic classes (advanced classes typically follow basic classes on the schedule, so the basic classes probably serve as a refresher for the advanced students). The benefit to beginners like me is that we often get to partner with some seasoned (and patient) people who are already comfortable with the techniques, and often help reinforce the correct way to practice.
