My sister and I were very excited to experience some of the local New Zealand culture. On a Sunday…read moremorning, we visited Back Porch Cafe to have some coffee. I ordered a latte and my sister ordered a mocha. The lady behind the counter took my order and was extremely unfriendly. When I asked questions about some of their nicknamed coffee items, she was terse and impatient with her responses. My sister and I sat on the back porch to drink our coffees. My latte was mediocre at best. I was really disappointed because I'd heard such good things about the coffee in New Zealand. My sister's mocha was even worse. She couldn't even drink it. My sister brought her mocha back and asked politely to have a refund. She explained that she couldn't even drink the coffee and had barely been able to sample it. An older gentleman behind the bar was EXTREMELY rude to her, saying things like "How is that my problem?" and " Well, you ordered it, didn't you?" and " You have three minutes to get off the premises." Yes. That's right. This poorly run establishment that couldn't even make a reasonable cup of coffee threw us out like we started a bar fight! My sister was very confused and hurt by the experience as she'd been very careful to treat the staff with respect and courtesy when sending the drink back. In short: Terrible coffee and even WORSE service! There are at least one or two other coffee shops in this strip and plenty a short drive away in downtown. DO NOT waste your money on these inferior beverages and awful service.

One star is really too kind for their wretched treatment of patrons. I am never coming back. The…read moreowner of the store is rude and hostile, while his wife is equally terse and uncaring. My experience with them was absolutely miserable. The sad part is that I was so excited to try their coffee (which was dreadful) and their atmosphere was so inviting. They had no patience with their customers and they had subpar products. Their coffee was like the establishment in general: looks good, but once you try it--AWFUL!

It's one of my favorite beach areas and we stayed on the Tauranga side (not the Mount side). With two little kiddos, we were up early and went to The Strand area in search of coffee (and breakfast, but mostly coffee). It was proably a little before 8:00 am and there were no souls to be found, except at the Dry Dock. We noticed that it seemed to literally be the only place open in the few blocks that we walked around. I was looking for something with a water view, but I was desperate for some caffiene and, with nothing else open, these guys had us as their captive audience. The good news is, it all turned out good. Really good. The staff were friendly and accommodating. We asked for a high chair and they just about fell over themselves with happiness to provide it (we later learned that they had just bought one for the cafe and we were the lucky first users of it). Breakfast was yummy and there was plenty of the standard NZ type breakfast options available, in addition to the goodies in the bakery cabinet. My husband had some yummy French toast with bananas and bacon. I had the mueli, which to be fair was a little different than I expected, but still good. It had a lot of fresh fruit on it (apples, bananas, etc.) which was all fine and dandy, but not as much meusli itself. So, if you find yourself in Tauranga with a need for breakfast and/or coffee (at an hour, really) swing on by and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

We ate breakfast here every morning and were treated like family. The food was delicious, the helpings generous and the price totally reasonable. The service was excellent as well. Very much recommend and we will definitely eat here when we're in Tauranga next.
