This is my first time back to Cologne since 2013 and my tastes must have evolved...either the food here has gotten less tasty or my taste buds have grown up. Which is not to say I don't love Em Golde Kappes....it's just that this time, well, the potato salad was good but not great. The bockwurst was, well, bockwurst. And the Himmel und Erde (Heaven and Earth), which is blutwurst with a side mixture of mashed potatoes, applesauce and onions, was OK. I had much better Himmel und Erde at Zum Kobbes (read my review there). Em Golde Kappes' blutwurst was soft, not firm, and didn't have the fried texture I prefer. The mashed potatoes with applesauce were overly runny and bland. Despite this, I'll still continue to go there...if only because it is a family tradition to eat here. The atmosphere is classic Kolsch and staff is friendly. But I suspect there are much better traditional Kolsch restaurants around. Guess I gotta go back to Cologne and keep eating, er, searching!

Love the ambience though, so I'd just head back and be prepared to wait.
