I contacted GI over a month ago looking for an engineering internship but ended up taking classes with him over a month. All I gotta say is that I'm so happy to have had the opportunity to work with someone who is so passionate and knowledgeable about their craft and so eager to help and answer your questions. Even though I was only supposed to be taught how to mix, I also learned many things about production, songwriting, and arrangement as well. I have never worked with someone who knew as much about music as GI and his mixes blow my mind each time I heard them. If you're looking for someone with a legitimate love and ear for music, who can mentor you and help you with anything you need, look no further. I started working with GI a few months back on mastering my DJ skills. I am a thinker and have had previous instructors with who I did not feel were a match. I would quickly be turned off to working with anyone who I felt as if the collaboration was lacking. This was my way of weeding out the great mentors vs. everyone else. I can honestly say GI is the first and only instructor I have had respect for and learn from each session we have. He has taught me so much more than simple DJing BKMs. My production skills, planning, preparation and social awareness has grown as well - items I never thought I would have to work on to be a successful DJ. Hands down, best recording experience I've had. Being relatively new to the recording industry, I reached out to BlckLbl Studios to see how they could help me. I met with Alec during my session and his help was incredible. The knowledge and skill he has when it comes to recording music was very evident. This was only further confirmed by the fact that I was feeling under the weather and could not perform as well as usual. But despite being sick, being a new artist, AND trying to record an original song, Alec was patient through it all. I went to G.I. studios a few months back for a friend's recording session. While I was there, I found out that they also held 1 on 1 DJ lessons with G.I. I was originally going to do a class in SF, but figured I could save some gas by doing it closer to home. In the 5 or 6 sessions that I've been to I've learned a lot about not only DJing but also the entertainment business as a whole. G.I. is very knowledgeable with the business and teaches you based off of your strengths and interests. I stumbled on GI Studios looking for a local I could work with in order to facilitate my new production in Nashville. Finding a professional like GI has been difficult here. So I have been working with Nashville producers and musicians, but it struck me odd that there was a studio only a few miles from where I was born, so I gave it a shot. I dealt with them (Alec Martin mainly) minimally because the job was small - putting an alto sax solo on a pop jazz song - but I could tell for sure they know their stuff. They knew of an optimal mic to use and gave it essential FX processing (secondarily to the raw files) - both being indicators of professionalism and technical strength. Also, upon my request, Alec was able to recommend an area studio that specializes in drum recording. Big studio too. Obviously they can handle big jobs. I went into the session not knowing anything about recording music, let alone writing and creating a song. I got there and everything was real layed back and chill which made everything easier due to the fact that I was really nervous. I booked 2 hours and left with a whole song. I usually don't write reviews but this was one of the best experiences i'v had in music. The people are very knowledgeable and welcoming making every step of your experience with them feeling like your own. It's not just some robot pushing a record button that just says "hows that sound?". I love it here! The atmosphere is great and makes you feel right at home, important for when working on projects or learning the process of it. G.I. I had a great experience working with G.I. on an audio track product I was creating. What I appreciated most was that his pace in studio was quick, without compromising quality or accuracy. We got our project done in way less time than allotted because we were both on top of it!
