They also have special events there too like teas for the various holidays. My husband and I enjoy walking through Hartwood and seeing the birds. We also liked seeing the chimneys for the birds. We especially enjoyed the tranquility and peace during covid. Late spring, my friends and I always wait to see who will be announced for the summer concert series. We've seen so many wonderful well known acts from across the decades. Fitz and the Tantrums and Howard Jones were two of my favorites. I've also gone there to volunteer for and attend the yearly Family House Polo Match. It's so cool that we have such a special event like that locally. They definitely have the field for it. It was so cool to see people playing polo live. It would be nice if they had better food trucks next year. the ones they chose this year were not good. If you want to be one with nature or enjoy a good time with friends and family, Hartwood is a great place to go.

The estate covers over six hundred acres of rolling hills, woods, and trails, and the Tudor-style mansion--built back in the late twenties--gives the whole place such a grand, timeless feel. Walking the grounds or sitting on the lawn listening to live music with the trees all around you is just unmatched. They also offer great seasonal events throughout the year. Beyond the summer concert series, they host fantastic community happenings, art exhibits, and holiday lights displays when it gets colder. It is truly a special park that feels worlds away from the city, even though it's right in our backyard.

I was fortunate and privileged to grow up with Frick as my backyard and walked all over the place before graduating to riding mountain bikes on the trails when the sport was in its infancy. Later, I ran high school cross-country races in Schenley and trained in Frick Park. Nowadays, we enjoy the flowers, wildlife, and groomed and maintained trails. I never appreciated how unique, rare, and amazing the parks are until I moved away and it's so great to see them treated as the unique assets they truly are.

I keep coming back and exploring different paths, only to realize there's always more to discover. It's one of those places where you can return again and again and still find something new, which makes it feel really special to me. The way the trails connect is one of my favorite things. Nine Mile Run flows into Deer Creek, which then connects into Tranquil Trail, creating an easy, continuous experience through the park. And thats just one corner of the park. While bathrooms are not abundant, you will occasionally find a porta potty, and there is often trash cans and benches toward the entrances and parking lots of the trail as well. Overall it's just a wonderful place to spend a sunny afternoon, and I really hope spaces like this continue to be preserved as an important part of Pittsburgh's identity and history.
