It is very damp and almost swampy as far as I can tell. I am not sure how true that is, maybe it was just because it was after a big rain. The trail is a decent hike that ends at the train tracks. There was a ton of mushrooms and other types of fungi, which was pretty cool to see. I also saw some deer and old ruins while I was on this trail. I have heard that the other trail has some pretty nice views of local towns. I am going to have to come back again and check out the rest of it. I guess we can add this place to the ever growing list of natural areas to visit near Pittsburgh.

There is a playground area with a very cool sculpture that you can climb and slide on. It has little people sculptures all over it that are fun to discover. There are chairs and benches and port-a Johns, and a restroom in the building too. There is even a dog park. The trail has been extended since my last visit, and goes all the way to Sharpsburg. The only thing I don't like is the big ugly cellphone tower, but I suppose it's a necessary evil. Overall, a very nice place to come and hang out and relax ... Cheers!

Visited this state park for the first time earlier this month and had a blast!…read more I parked at what I think is the main lot, up above the mill itself. I didn't take a tour of the mill (which the park volunteers and staff do offer throughout the day) but I did walk through it and read the information in it about the history of the mill. Definitely enjoyed exploring and learning. That said, I was really there for the trails, so I spent most of my day hiking. I took a loop trail down from the mill and back (with a detour up a short trail to some falls) and it was great! I love being outside and I love a good challenge; these trails were not paved or even at all and I had a great workout navigating them. During hydration breaks I'd find a nice rock to sit on by the water, which was wonderful. It was noisy as heck by the mill because of the families, but the further out I got the more peaceful it got. Definitely met my goal of unplugging for a day during my trek on the trails. I want to come back in the future and begin to try to walk the Slippery Gorge Trail, as it sounds like the gorge is another beautiful part of the park. But that is definitely a long term goal, because that trail is not a short one! I loved visiting this park and I'd be back for sure. To everyone else, PLEASE remember water and wear the proper footwear - while I enjoyed my walk in the park, these trails are definitely not a walk in the park!

Our kids love this park. From the multiple play places to the magically large sand box filled with…read moretrucks, they enjoy every visit. There are play places for different ages, the soft bouncy ground around the play places, and benches around the sandbox and nearby for parents to sit close while letting the kids independently play. In terms of potties, there's a porta potty nearby but this is probably the big thing that's lacking at this park. There are other fields, courts, and hiking paths at this part too. Given it's so close to our home it really does have it all. They also regularly host Franklin Park Borough events here, which is really fun! I held my family reunion in this park in August 2016 and it provided an excellent setting for a…read morefamily gathering where we had not seen each other in 40 years. The building where we held the event was known as the Girl Scout Little House which was built during the 1940's for the GSA. Although the building needs some renovations, it served its purpose well. Although located in an urban area (New Kensington, PA), it is somewhat secluded and surrounded on three sides by woods. There is a highway on one side that causes some noise pollution, but nothing much to worry about. There are also other free standing picnic pavilions on site, and a recreation of the original Massa Harbison log cabin which was made famous during the early conflicts with the Native Americans, which the younger members of the family adored. This site is a rare jewel in the raw and requires the attention of city officials to secure funding to rehab the site to become a destination location in the future.
