Nowhere is a one-stop shop more significant for me than when it's a car shop. I drive a 14-year-old…read moresports sedan that I totally, absolutely love, but I have to admit, maintaining an old car can be a pain. Going to one shop for exterior and interior detailing, another for mechanical repairs, and yet another for engine concerns, and so on -- I just don't have the time, the patience, or the funds for it -- really, having several people work on your car will run you dry. But I digress. As I was saying, a one-stop-shop for cars is in order. A good one. When I found out that Ziebart now does more than just keep a "tidy car" for you, I got excited. No, really! They do everything now, from dent removal and paint jobs, to tune ups and mechanical parts replacement. That's basically everything you need to keep your car in shape, and they do everything in one very accessible place! (Of course they have several branches across the country, but the main one, in Pasong Tamo, happens to be the most convenient for me.) As early as 7 am, you will see the red shirts hanging out outside the establishment, waiting to assist people who pull up in their cars. Each one is polite, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to. My go-to guy is Sir Mike. He listens to your concerns and assesses the entire car to make sure they cover what you may need when they give you a diagnosis and a cost estimate. He explains everything thoroughly, so you can decide whether you want to do everything all at once, or if you can afford to stagger the repairs so that your car doesn't sit there for too long at a time. Their rates are quite competitive, and you know that your car is safe even if you have to leave it there for days at a time. Needless to say my car and I have been back a couple of times, and each time we drive away satisfied. Oh, and did I mention they offer instalment payments for big purchases made through your credit card? :-)

Or not, depending on how often you venture into this side if Makati. Either way, Tower of David - longstanding purveyors of car aircon and electrical repairs - is unmistakeable in its perch of over 20 years. The aforementioned yellow gate is adorned with a satisfaction guarantee that looks so believable, I wished my aircon would fall apart the first time I saw it just so i could feel that level of satisfaction. So the moment a light bulb blew its tiny, blessed heart out burning for my brightness needs at night, there was no other place in my mind to turn to (quite literally, I might add) that the Tower of David. Which, by the way, is a pretty epic name for what basically was a damp, rusty driveway. Despite the disheartening visual register and unfortunately degrading environment, however, the fantastically-accessorized (you'll see what I mean), knowledgeable crew at Tower of David did a thorough, cheap, and quick job replacing the broken bulb and even offering wisdom as to the next steps to take and what to expect following the operation. Haven't had the opportunity to test out their mettle in the aircon arena, but based on my experience with that bulb and a subsequent visit (not to mention that really quite attractive written guarantee), Tower of David may prove a safe, affordable, and reliable choice for aircon and electrical repairs in the Makati area.

So the day before Labor Day, when I was on my way to Makati with my Dad (we were in his car), we…read morewere surprised to see the battery charge warning light flicker. This was our car's way of telling us that the average lifespan of a car's alternator is about 6 years. Yes, it's been that long since we had that changed or checked, so kudos to that part's durability. Before I go any further, understand that the alternator is what takes care of all your car's electric-powered functions like lights, horn, turn signals, airconditioning, and radio. When you turn the key or press the start button on your car, that's when the battery works, then after the engine is on, the alternator takes over. I won't go into detail as to how all this really works, but the important thing to remember is that the alternator is the thingamabob that takes over the job of powering your car's electrical stuff, and keeps your battery from draining itself, something our particular car's alternator stopped doing. To think the other day, we changed the battery itself, since the car wouldn't start, so apparently, the alternator was indeed the problem all along. We hopped on over to Motolite on Pasong Tamo, and they did determine that the alternator was the problem. They were nice enough to point us to a good auto repair shop nearby, called "Tower of David" With a quick jumpstart to our battery, we drove on over to Tower of David, and were told to look for "Ariel". "Ariel" was their resident expert on all things electrical. He was a jolly, unassuming fellow who I must say was quite the professional. And, thank goodness, he had a shirt on and he wasn't your typical "grease monkey" who was covered in, uh, grease and reeked of gasoline and gin. Ariel was polite, soft-spoken and jolly the entire time. A quick check with his electrical battery-output-checking thingamagig confirmed that the alternator wasn't working and needed replacing. Ariel politely suggested we replace it, and it would cost a hefty P22,000. The amount was difficult to believe, for such a small part, but he noted that it was original, brand new, and made in Japan (thank goodness). "Pero sir, pwede din naman 'yung "replacement", was his quip. I can't quite tell you what he meant by that, maybe "refurbished" is what he meant, but Ariel assured us that it was just as good, didn't use ball bearings, came with a 6-month warranty, and only cost P13,500. P8500 less, presumably more hi-tech, with labor costs included, and comes with a warranty? Eh di wow! So what did we do? DUH naturally we took that option, and we were glad Ariel brought it up. We gave Ariel the go-ahead and he told us we could just leave our number with their Secretary to tell us when it's ok to pick up the car. I went into their cramped little office and put Dad's cellphone number in a logbook... at first I thought their Secretary was the skinny Siamese cat that was sleeping on their counter, but alas, their Secretary was this friendly lady instead. And the funny thing about that cat was, it was named "Pangit", which I found unfair kasi hindi naman pangit yung pusa. Dang, that would've been cool, "Tower of David" for a business name, with a feline Secretary that took down customer's names. We came back after about four hours to get the car, and it works fine. I give this little Auto Supply & repair shop flying colors as of now, for as long as the new alternator they supplied and installed works. Three days on, and the car purrs like "Pangit", and handles like it was brand-new. Head on to "Tower of David" if you need your car fixed.

While I was…read morethankful that no one was harmed in the accident, I was distraught about the big dent on the said area of my car which became a daily reminder of how my family and I came dangerously close to being flattened by a monster bus. As luck would have it, a fellow from Bicol mentioned that the dent on my car can be easily fixed with a paintless dent removal service. Apparently, the guy had a similar experience against a trailer truck. He recommended the shop that fixed his car, it was along Buendia Avenue, near the Paseo de Roxas intersection in Makati. It must be Paintless Dent Removal & Painting Services. I recognized the place immediately because whenever I pass by Buendia (now called Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue), I'd see the shop's huge tarp signage giving out contact numbers of a certain Rovic, who must be the owner of the place. As soon as I got back in Manila, I immediately drove to Rovic's. The shop is actually located inside a sales center for pre-owned vehicles. Although the address is in No. 387 Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue, the entrance to the place is around the back at No. 31 Jupiter Street. After checking and measuring (size determines price) the dent on my car, Sir Rovic gave me a price quote. It was around PHP 3,000.00. I left the car around 10:00am on a Tuesday. I got it back, fully-restored, by 6:00pm. Upon looking at the front fender, I couldn't believe that no trace of the dent was left, even the color of the affected area was indistinguishable to the rest of the car's body paint. It's as if I never had a road incident. I was very impressed.

My car is marked with "scars" and "signs of life" on all sides, and it was with so much pity that I felt I just had to do the car justice and have it repaired. I consulted with my Dad's good friend who is very much into cars, and he highly recommended this particular branch for Paintless Dent Removal. I headed there one afternoon and had it checked. What I am particularly impressed with is that there was a staff member holding a clipboard, which apparently had a form and a mock drawing of a car, so they can plot the damages on the car to be serviced. They then carefully assessed the amount of work that needed to be done. While one was taking down notes, another staff member took photos of the parts to be repaired. After about 5 minutes, an assessment form and quote was handed to me, with price points for each area to be repaired. I found this nice because they were even able to explain to me why each part cost so and so amount. Glad to see their process, I brought the car there to be serviced. As promised, they were able to finish repairs in four days. Considering the amount of work that had to be done, I was glad they finished on time. Inspecting the job done, I was impressed that there were no visible signs of whatever happened to the car in the past year. I will totally recommend them to friends who will be in need of their service. Indeed, there's no need for advertising when all a business really needs is to give good service as the customers will do the advertising for them.
