We came to the Christmas Market in Chester and this fishy was out hawking their wares! Their restaurant is set up right next to the Christmas market with prime foot traffic, so they took the opportunity to pass out free samples of their award winning chips (fries). They were indeed really good and my toddler was hungry, so we decided to get some. My husband ran in for a small bag, but then the three adults also shared with him so they were gone in no time. My husband actually went in and bought another bag to share! They were really good though! They had a nice crisp crunch on the outside and soft inside. We didn't try any of the other items offered, but everything looked good. Next time! read more

Good location and the inside is very nice and modern, despite being a bit bare. Fish and chips were poor though. As another reviewer commented the chips lacked that real chippy taste and the cod fillet kept breaking up into tiny pieces when I tried grabbing a portion with my fork. Batter was not very nice either. It all tasted rather 'cheap' to be honest. Will stick to eating out at gastro pubs when I visit Chester in future. read more

Tried this place last weekend as we heard it was opening and Chester is short on fish and chip places where you can sit in with kids it was ideal. Loads of seating, fashionable interior and the food was great. We tried cod, a meat pie and fishcakes for the kids and they were all better than any takeaway we've had since moving up north. The fish was all fresh and it does make a difference to eating something out of a heated display the batter was spot on crunchy. Soft drinks were on tap/fountain which was much nicer than drinking from cans, and it was all nicely presented. Ideal informal dining without resorting to cardboard from burger chains. We'll be back! read more

Shame because fish was fresh but batter became very soggy very quickly underneath. Chips lacked flavour and real chippy taste. Expensive also at over £6 for reg Cod & Chips (no extras). This is a shame because Chester lacks good Fish & Chippy restaurants, unlike Wrexham ( try Les's). Won't return unless prices come down and refinements to cooking. read more

Looks very nice from the outside but once you are in it's unclear as to what the place is. Is it trying to be a restaurant like Harry Ramsdens, or your local chippy? The staff were rather average when I went in, and like others have complained the batter was not upto much. The pricing adds further confusion as it has restaurant prices but in reality all you get is your basic everyday soggy fish and chips with sachets of sauce that you have to pay for! With competition like macdonalds next door I know where I shall go next time. read more

I have only tried the chips, and they were the best I have ever tasted crispy, crunchy outer with perfect fluffy inside, yummy. Looking forward to visiting to try the fish. Positioned in centre of the city, so you can pop in while shopping, working or just visiting the city. read more

I love my fish and chips coming from 'down under' so as soon as I heard about Blackstocks I had to try it. I took the family on the first day it opened, which I try not to do with new eateries. But I have to say I was not disappointed, the only thing was the wait which was about 30 mins from arriving to getting my food. To be fair they did have a long queue as it was Saturday lunchtime and it was their first day, so I thought it wasn't too bad. The place was clean, not just because they were newly opened but also because there was a member of staff walking around sweeping the floor, cleaning tables as soon as they were vacated! I like the fresh look of the place, and the staff were friendly. Now the fish, you could tell it was fresh it was so tasty. My other half had the haddock and I had the special of the day whiting, both were full of favour and the batter was light and crispy. The chips were freshly cooked too, not like most chip shops were the fish and chips sit around for ages to go soggy. My little one loved the fish cake. It went down so well we had to get him another one. I am so pleased that for the first time in years I have a decent fish and chip shop on my doorstep. Friday nights for my little one are now going to have the same dietary habit that my youth had. If you love good fish and chips you will love the food here. read more

Soon as I heard Blackstocks opened its doors I legged it down there quicktime as fish n chips is indeed one of my favourite treats and unfortunately been unable to find any decent ones since we arrived in Chester, and boy was it worth the wait. The freshest, tastiest fish & chips I have ever had, you'll find a selection of perfectly cooked fish in the tastiest batter all FRESH not frozen, a steak pie to die for and what I loved the most as its packaged in boxes it was all still lovely & crispy when we got it home not a single soggy chip in sight! Great location slap bang in the town centre so perfect for a lunch stop during a busy shopping day in Chester. With a fresh, modern and spotless inside seating area you can eat in or take out, these guys definately know their fish n chips just get yourself down there and taste for yourself you won't be disappointed! read more

My sister & I live in South Shields where we have the winner of Britains Best Fish & Chip Shop Award- Colmans. So Blackstocks had a lot to live up to when we visited the restaurant on Sat 31st March whilst on a coach trip to Chester. Wow were we in for a pleasant surprise the fish was perfect,crispy batter,no soggy bits and their chips were absolutely the best we had ever tasted, light and crispy due to their special twice fried technique. The chap who served us Gareth was so pleasant and helpful and advised us they has not been open very long and were still finding their feet, as it were. Well Gareth as far as we are concerned you have a winner here well done to management and staff and may you go from strength to strength. We will certainly be back in the future. If you are visiting Chester this is a must. Located next door to the Market entrance. read more

Blackstocks has shown me the light, as well as presented me with a dilemma. The fish and chips was so good I'll now never be able to just pop round the corner to my local chippy and be happy with it cos the difference is massive. Can be a slight wait but that must be cos its freshly cooked. Price is surprisingly good for fresh fish and I love the fact they have a daily special. There is nowhere like it in the area. Went to this new fish and chip place on Sunday with my family as heard it was opening and we are all big fish and chip lovers! We were not disappointed, the fish was chunky and really fresh and chips crunchy. My husband had the steak pie and he didn't stop talking about it all the way home! Massivly over priced. very un-clear pricing at entrance £5 fish and chips certainly not the case. Very friendly staff and good fish and chips. just a real shame about the hugely greedy pricing and on top of that charging extra for tomato sauce in little sachees. ridiculous ,unneccesary, a complete joke .!!!! infact if the sauce was free I wouldnt of bothered writing this damning review. read more
