Buyer beware! My wife and I booked Clay Corner Inn several weeks ago so we could visit our daughter for Parent's Weekend. Less than a week prior, we got an email from Josh saying his reservation company double booked us and he has to cancel our reservation. As out-of-state parents, we had already invested a lot of money for the weekend. He offered some gift cards as compensation. There are no other hotels available anywhere within an hour. We had to cancel everything and take a significant financial hit. A look at the VA Tech Parents page on another social media site shows that we weren't the only family he did this to. In fact, we saw screen shots with the same email and excuses. We saw some terrible responses from Josh to very distraught parents. It's unfortunate. If you have rooms booked there in the future, especially for an important event, I highly recommend you look elsewhere. Definitely do not send cash or use Venmo to pay in advance. read more

Lots of negative comments on VT parents social media pages on how terrible this business is. This business has the tendency to overbook and last minute calls and makes up excuses and cancels your reservation. Parents were in panic mode a week before their children's graduation, family week, etc. They are supposed to be happy and celebrating but because of this business's poor practice their experiences are ruined and had to scramble to find already slim picking of hotel choices in Blacksburg. Total scam. Stay far far away! Will take your money, overbook the rooms, and not provide refunds.

If you have expectations of arriving at this B&B and being greeted by a nice couple in the foyer offering you a warm, freshly baked oatmeal raisin cookie you need to lower your expectations. How low? We arrived and couldn't find the foyer--because there isn't one! We looked for the entrance, but no one was around. The front door was open...hmmm. Inside there were only high-top tables. We went back outside, called and talked to someone who said it's a self-entry system using the last four digits of your phone number. We got our luggage and walked up the winding stairs, but the hall was so dark we couldn't see the keypad until we used the light on a cell phone to push the buttons to enter. The room was very hot--old baseboard heaters blasting away. Downstairs was hot, but this was like 90 degrees! Was only able to open a window a few inches and turn on the world's smallest window-mounted AC unit. Couldn't get the Roku TV working--finally unplugged it under a desk to reset it. Wine glasses? Nah. Plastic glasses like the Holiday Inn Express or a ceramic coffee cup from downstairs. Oh, saw some glassware--in the bar, locked up...hmmm. Left for our event, came back, still hot in the room. Left, came back at 10:00, it was still very hot in the room. Who do we call at 10:00 p.m.? Ran the AC unit all night--loudly cycling on and off every 10 minutes. At 6:00 a.m. the room temp was finally in the 70's. We called to cancel breakfast. Oh, BTW, we had to order it the night before on a Google app by 7:30. What if you don't? Do you get scrammies and burnt toast or nothing at all? Went downstairs at 7:24 to get a cup of coffee. No coffee--every B&B we've stayed in--the first thing they do is put out coffee in the morning...hmmm. The bathroom had incredibly old fixtures, and not in a good way--call it Frat House Modern, including the world's lowest toilet. Not expecting a rose or even a fold on the TP--got half a roll with the paper skimming the floor. Pretty obvious someone didn't prep that room. The shower was a porcelain base, like a tub, but it was a square--just a shower. Dirty, stained. Didn't use it. We were charged the balance on the card without documentation or our consent. Our biggest concern was safety, every self-entry system we've used has an auto lock on the front door and a separate lock on the room! We never heard or saw anyone on the property. I guess we'll look elsewhere for that warm oatmeal cookie--but not at an aging frat house. read more

We had a wonderful visit! So close to the campus, it was cheaper and more convenient than staying at the campus hotel. They've thought of so many details - it was very easy to park, access the main house, and access our room without a formal check-in process. The room and bathroom were spacious with a huge walk-in closet. The truffles waiting for us in our room were delicious. They had helpful instructions for the tv, as well. We ordered breakfast online the day before as requested, and were surprised to see a long list of choices. Sherry prepared our breakfast right on time and it was delicious. She couldn't have been nicer. Highly recommend you give this place a chance - it's a real gem. read more

This review is only for the restaurant. We loved the look and feel on the restaurant on the inside, and the owners seemed personable and engaged in their business. But our food was just OK on the day we went for brunch. The biscuits came with those same institutional jelly packets you get at a place like Waffle House rather than some great in-house made or local jam like our favorite B&Bs and local restaurants. The salads dressings don't seem to be made in house, either, and our salads were flavorless. The little touches that can make restaurant meals awesome weren't there. But we'll try it again another time; maybe it was just an off day? read more

Beware! Inn overbooked even though I had pre-paid my reservation. Many other VT families caught in similar situations in the past month and others shared the same situation for 2023 graduation. Owner forgot to communicate the cancellation and I only found out because I called to tell them I was about 30 mins away and was arriving late. I found myself in Blacksburg on Virginia Tech Parents Weekend at 9:00 PM with no place to stay and very few hotel rooms available in the area. I finally found 1 hotel room with excessively high rates and asked the Clay Corner Inn owner if he would pay the difference (~$600) and was told in writing that he would. It took several months to get my prepaid reservation funds (~$600) refunded even though their "CPA" assured me I am at the top of the list. 6 months later, I still have not received the additional funds for the price difference I paid to book a room at a different hotel. STAY AWAY! Clay Corner is a scammer place. They overbook especially for big VT weekends (games, graduation, etc) then tell you last min or when you show up that they're full and can't take you, often making up some lie about a family death or having to sell the place. Decided to do a weekend getaway by myself to do some COVID friendly activities and ended up in southwest Virginia doing some hiking! I found Clay Corner Inn on Yelp and decided to give them a try and I enjoyed my stay! The COVID precautions taken were beyond what I expected out of a hotel. Josh, the general manager was great at communicating information throughout my stay such as room codes via text so that as face to face contact would be limited. And breakfast was through an online ordering system and there was ample outdoor seating by the pool available (or you could have breakfast delivered to your room). The room was very nice and cozy and a fantastic place to stay for a weekend. The hotel is located blocks away from the Virginia Tech campus and the restaurants/shops in downtown Blacksburg. Definitely would recommend Clay Corner Inn if you're looking for a place to stay in the Blacksburg area! read more

Do not trust these people. They double book their rooms, take your money and then cancel your reservation without refunding your money. A TOTAL SCAM! They posted on their FB page that the person who did this is no longer with the Inn however, his wife is still the owner and works there. I truly do not believe anything they say. They canceled a week before my son's graduation leaving us with no lodging during a time that was supposed to be a celebration. From the delicious breakfast delivered to my room to the chocolates from Sugar Magnolia that greeted me when I first walked in, Clay Corner Inn is a wonderful place to stay when one is in Blacksburg. First, they upgraded me to a King size bed at no cost. They allowed early check-in times, so I could get in extra time going through downtown Blacksburg. The property is across the street from the Huckleberry Trail, which is a wonderful place to get some easy walking in while you're in town. My room was spacious and very clean and neat. I had plenty of towels and anything else that I would have needed. The first morning I had Grandma's Casserole, which was delicious and full of eggs, sausage, and cheese. It was so hearty that I couldn't even finish it all. The next morning I had scrambled eggs, toast and breakfast potatoes. Again, it was filing and delicious. The location was close enough that I was able to leave my car in the parking lot and walk into town, which was very nice. Many restaurants and shops are only a five to ten minute walk away. I highly recommend the Clay Corner Inn for anyone who wants a lovely stay in Blacksburg. read more

I mean COME ON PEOPLE it's an Old Building. It is so conveniently located to the most breathtaking place in VA and the staff try's SOOOOO hard to accommodate you! I loved our stay! A little overpriced I'd prefer their made to order breakfast vs the breakfast bar I'm sure but it was all worth it! Remember it's a very old building to keep up with! I feel they do a great job trying to keep its character and charm. They have their own private entrance through the tunnel that takes you seriously on a 10 minute walk before your actually just standing UNDER the Natural Bridge! read more

I had some friends that were just told their reservations were canceled. People have booked these rooms a year in advance and last min cancellations are devastating. I would not trust this business. The local news even did a story on them. Over booked rooms is a scam and they should be shut down. This also happened last year to some people. read more

We too were almost scammed by them taking our prepaid booking and not having any rooms available. After many months of complaining they finally sent our money back.... It wasn't easy. Clay Corner strikes again. We had rooms booked for the upcoming 2024 commencement. As posted previously, there are multiple posts on the VT Parents page of last-minute cancellations and overbooking by this establishment, because of that I booked one year in advance and checked in with the owner/manager often to ensure we were all set. Graduation at Virginia Tech is draws thousands and finding accommodations is very difficult. Fast forward to last week, two weeks before graduation, my daughter called me in a panic stating that two people she knew had just received calls to say that they are no longer honoring their grad reservations. I called in once again this time he could not honor any grad reservations, stating that it was out of his control because the owners were forcing the issue. While he offered up a potential fix to stay at another establishment "who had rooms reserved for this", I had to pay $800 more to stay in a much smaller room in a less convenient location. Furthermore, I found out later that my daughter's roommate received confirmation for her family to stay there for graduation. Sadly this leads me to believe that he overbooked, as usual, just like I had read over and over again. Now we are out $800 and our hope to stay in this quaint and convenient location dashed at the last minute. I have to wonder if I hadn't checked in with him, would I have had a room when we showed up? I've never realized such an underhanded way of doing business and can't even fathom that someone who practices business like this is still operating. A terrible experience!!!! Reservation was booked and paid in full, however, no confirmation was received. I contacted them multiple times asking for the confirmation and was given the runaround for weeks until I was finally informed that there was an overbooking issue and my reservation would be cancelled. I requested a refund which still hadn't come through after nearly two weeks (and multiple emails). As a result, I had American Express handle the dispute. After reading several VA Tech Parents page posts, it was obvious that Clay Corner is known for overbooking and cancelling reservations at the last minute. What a terrible way to run a business! We came here for my daughter's graduation. To be honest, we came to this place because everywhere else was already full by the time. My daughter decided she wanted to go out to dinner afterwards. However, it turned out to be the absolute best decision that we could have made. The food was really good. The chef was freaking amazing. He came out and talked to us many times and we had our 1-year-old little granddaughter with us and he even made her some special food that she would enjoy. How sweet and awesome is that! Our waitress was on point and super attentive without being intrusive. They gave us our own little room because there were about 10 to 11 of us. Which was awesome because then we didn't have to worry about bothering other diners and it felt a little better, you know- as far as covid. I don't even remember what I ate. I just remember I really liked it. Everybody loved their food. If you ever have the chance to come eat here, run do it! read more

My husband I are season ticket holders to VA Tech football games, and Clay Corner is our favorite place to stay when we are in town. We have been staying there since they reopened in 2008. The inn was recently sold and is now under new ownership (Rick and Nicky), but not much has changed (except adding in some new breakfast options, which we love!). They have eight rooms to choose from - two in the main house, and three each in the connecting houses. The rooms are spacious and clean, the inn is walking distance to everything, and the innkeepers and their staff are very warm and welcoming. Off-street parking is provided. Breakfast is provided, too! We love staying in the two houses connected to the inn because they have their own kitchens and living areas. There is also great outdoor space, with covered porches and a pool connected to the property. Obviously, the inn is in high demand during big weekends, like football games, parent's weekend, and graduation. So, plan ahead! But, it's worth the extra effort to stay here - we just love it! read more

Not a bad place to stay while in Blacksburg. The owners were out of town when I arrived (Easter Sunday), so there wasn't much to do except go out. The room was comfortable and reasonably priced. Watch out for the breakfast, though. The yogurt was a little off and they served the equivalent of a turkey sandwich benedict, which was a ton of food. I guess I'm not used to lunch for breakfast. My wife and I stayed here while visiting the NRV recently. Our expectations of this place were very different than reality, and not in a good way. The Clay Corner Inn is basically bed and breakfast for the suburban set. Our room was like any room in a house built in the last ten years. It was boring. The folks working there were nice enough. The room was clean and the bed slept well. The breakfast was just OK (wheat pancakes with sourcream and a plain sausage patty). I think bed and breakfasts need to have personality. This one didn't. Stayed here for a weekend getaway. Loved the location and the atmosphere. Awesome breakfast with homemade food. Only downside is the price. I would like to see more of a seasonal difference in prices. They have some variation, but summer and winter should be MUCH less than fall and spring. Just a suggestion :) read more

I think any reviews here below 5 stars is not applicable to the inn run by the current owners. This is the single best place to stay in Blacksburg. Excellent teas, nicely decorated, comfortable lodging, really nice innkeeper. The in-house granola + yogurt + berries was an excellent 2 minute breakfast before I rushed off to an appointment at Virginia Tech. Cookies are delicious. Wish I woke up earlier so I could try their hot breakfast offerings. Will stay again, for every visit to VT. read more

I'm giving this place 4 stars only because yelp operates in whole number scores, but I'd probably give this place 3.5 stars if I could. The fact that someone else gave Clay Corner Inn 2 stars makes me feel okay about giving it 4. There, now that my scoring rant is out of the way, I'll break down my experience. The booking was super easy. They let us check in early and were really nice about allowing us to check in at any time. They have rockin' homemade cookies and sweets available throughout the day. The breakfast was great: Coffee, OJ, Citrus infused peaches w/ heavy cream, homemade scones, granola, and poached eggs. Awesome. I'd say that that breakfast out would have run the two of us $30 - and a night stay here was $144, so I thought that it was a good deal. The room we stayed in was nice too. It was kind of like staying at your grandmothers house, minus the smell of mothballs or having to watch Golden Girls on repeat. The TV was small, but the room was large. The bed was great, very comfortable with nice plush sheets. The bathroom was stocked with decent amenities. There was a kitchen downstairs and the fridge was stocked with soda and cold water. An added plus! I would definitely stay here again. The place is quaint and clean, the price is right, and the location is excellent. read more

My husband and I, along with our in-laws, stayed here earlier this summer and loved it. I think they are the only b&b/hotel that accepts dogs in the area, which worked out great for us. The staff is very accommodating and helpful. The setup is a main house and 3 (?) smaller houses with guest rooms in each, and the property is located in a neighborhood near Main St. We stayed in one of the smaller houses and had the whole place to ourselves the first night. It had a full kitchen and living room, plus the guest rooms. While not fancy, our room was very nice and comfortable and had everything we needed. For the price, the accommodations were very nice. Not sure what the first reviewer's problem was, but we thought the breakfasts were awesome. They have self-serve items like scones, granola, yogurt, etc out all morning, in addition to the plated breakfast you get (which does end by a certain time, but you can eat anytime you want before then, rather than at a set time). They also have delicious baked goods out all day. What I actually enjoyed most was that contrary to a lot of B&Bs, this one was un-fussy, yet still got all the details right. And for the price, you can't beat it. We would definitely stay here again. read more

I've stayed at the Clay Corner Inn twice now for business at VA Tech. The location is fantastic and they allow me to leave my car parked on site so I can walk to campus and not worry about parking there. Their breakfast is absolutely delicious. The rooms are very nice and clean and there are several common areas which make it perfect for traveling in a group. I recently had to cancel my reservation with little notice due to inclement weather and they are allowing me to use the credit in the fall when I will next be traveling to VA Tech next.
