We hired 'Romance' for a 60th birthday celebration. The process of booking was easy and…read morestraightforward, with staff being helpful, courteous and efficient. Canal Boat Cruises provided us with a large and varied menu from which we, as clients, chose two items for each course, starter, main course and dessert; guests were then asked in advance what they wanted to eat, and the orders were duly submitted. On the day we were welcomed aboard with 'red carpet' treatment. It is worth mentioning that access to the boat is down steps, which may make it difficult for people with restricted mobility. The space inside the boat is large and airy, and makes for a great atmosphere, with pleasant background music playing. Once all guests were on board the crew cast off for our three hour cruise during which a delicious lunch - which had been cooked on board from fresh ingredients - was served. The bar was, open, drinks were served, and everyone had a great time. The service was faultless, and we can recommend this venue for any family celebration without reservation.

Lancaster Railway Station is a medium sized train station with five platforms (ok, six platforms,…read morebut platform six has been closed for years). It is handy for services to and through the city of Lancaster. Virgin run trains through here between London and Birmingham to Glasgow and Edinburgh. Transpenine express run a few more to Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as to Preston and Manchester Airport. Northern operate local and regional trains to closer stations including Leeds. It's an old station and originally opened in 1846 but it was remodelled between 1900-1906 which gave it the mock-Elizabethan style it has now. It's quite nice and is bright and airy with indoor waiting rooms. However, there's a distinct lack of businesses on the platforms and it could very much benefit from an extra cafe (it has a Costa) or a pub. There is at least one shop, a small newsagents. The station is easy to get around and is accessible and well signposted. It has a car pack and plenty of space for bikes, including bike racks and lockers. There are no ticket gates here, as of June 2016. There also doesn't seem to be WiFi, but perhaps I just couldn't connect. I suppose if you needed to work your best bet would be in the Costa.

The Eco Visitor Centre acts as the welcome point for the towns esplanade park and ride. The building has won loads of awards and was designed to act as a real demonstration of environmentally sound construction methods and the impacts we all have on the environment with our energy use. The Eco Visitor Centre generates most of its power and heat requirements from renewable technologies. Pretty cool! Facilities at the Eco Centre include the 'Eco Education Displays'. The centre is very geared up for schools to visit with an eco classroom and onsite teacher.

We went for the squirrel route which takes you south along the coast and then through the woodland and finally to the beach at Formby. The first part of the trip (coastal road) was hard! The wind was against us and it was a struggle to keep going However get your ipod on and keep at it because as soon as you turn off into the woodland the ride becomes a lot more fun :-) The woods was the best part as you got the reward of whizzing down the hills once you'd made it up them! The beach was quiet, although very windy and it started to rain a bit so we headed back. The way back was a lot easier once the wind was behind us. There and back was about 18 miles and took us about 2 1/2 hours. It's a shame we had to catch our train home because it would have been nice to stay on the beach a bit longer and we might of been able to join onto another of the routes when we got back to the main road. I would definitely hire from here again and try one of the other routes. Or maybe do the squirrel one again and spend longer down at the beach if it's a nice day.

Blackpool station. North…read more Quite a small station this one, but plays part to being open planned with a huge roof and plenty of light. There's a good amount of seating for the size and I'm unsure about a cafe but I can't remember there being one (I could be wrong). One thing I didn't like was that the platform doors were locked until the train instructors saw fit to open them meaning you wasn't allowed on the platforms and had to wait in the inside area. All in all, a clean looking but standard station.
