The steak is amazing here.the service could use some help but worth the wait.I also feel presentation of the food could be better.

Did someone say good steak? :-) We were caught off guard with the decor of the restaurant but it is very unique and impressive in a vintage way. We were referred this location from a friend (shout out to Casey) and he provided a heads up about the old fashioned decor and possible long wait time...but when someone says, "good steak!" I am there The service provided by Sandy and Trace felt personal and genuinely friendly. We were fortunate that there were only a few other customers in the restaurant at the time as I could see how they get busy and wait time for the meal could be long but if you like good food and are not in a hurry I urge you to check this location out. Our meat was prepared as requested and was juicy and tender. I requested my baked potato to be prepared a certain way and while they said they would do their best they didn't make any promises. The potato was cooked almost perfectly to my specifications. Overall the meal was very good and I enjoyed the experience. Some added bonuses- they had some great salad dressings and the pina colada is wonderful. Apparently the drink is a specialty of Trace. Also we added some of the white garlic salad dressing onto the potato and it was indeed the bee's knees. read more

It was a new experience and very good. Sorry but it took to long . The atmosphere was like a time capsule from the seventies

If I could give this place a negative rating I would. We went into the establishment and waited for around 30 minutes, not one waiter would wait on our table. When they did finally wait on us my mom, (which has a chronic cough diagnosed by multiple doctors) started coughing a little bit here and there, the waitress came up to the table, stepped to the table then backed away from the table covering her mouth, in front of EVERYONE and said " I can't wait on your table because the last time I waited on someone's table who was sick I got sick too" then walked away. They then made everyone wait there for another 10-15 minutes before the other waitress came over and said "we can't serve sick people" and walked away. At that time we just kindly got up and the party of 25 - 30 people just got up and we went to Mongolian grill, which treated us with WAY more respect. Not one person asked if she was sick and not one person asked if she was ok, nothing. This place is a joke and I hope nothing but the worst for them. I hope others have a better experience, it doesn't make anyone feel good to be treated that way. We would NEVER go out to a restaurant if anyone in the party was sick. read more

If you want to step back into 1975, this is the place for you. The food was decent. There aren't many places in Yankton to get a steak. The service is notoriously slow and has been for years. Don't plan on using a credit card even though there is a sign on the cash register that clearly states they accept credit cards. read more

I don't mind paying for quality food but the quality has gone way down and the prices have increased. The most annoying thing is if you ask for more bread they charge extra. If paying 20 bucks for chicken strips and over 40 for a small filet can't include an extra slice a bread, I am all out with this place. read more

Best steaks in the area! Steaks are grilled on an indoor charcoal grill & served with great juice. The barbecued ribs are another favorite. When they have shrimp their Green shrimp are also excellent. read more

Do not eat here. The restaurant is severely understaffed, but nice. There were 4 tables seated and we waited 1.5 hours to get get food. The homemade salad dressings were amazing. The rest of the food was subpar and very over priced. We ordered an extra baked potato for $9. The potatoes were trimmed with packets of butter and sour cream. The ribeyes ordered were prime rib, the steaks are not cooked on charcoal and there was more fat on the steaks than meat. I was visiting family in Mission Hill and came to Black Steer with them. I had the filet with a baked potato and tossed salad with garlic dressing. Boy oh boy was it delicious. The warm bread seemed to be homemade and delicious, the salad fixings were very fresh and crunchy with the best garlic dressing I've ever had! The baked potato was baked perfectly, it must've been in the oven all day. Now into the filet, it was delicious. Cooked over charcoal made the flavor so great and the au jus made it even better. How do I put this delicately: this is a great place where you can go mingle with the elite of Yankton and the surrounding area. A true supper club. If you are coming for a great steak you will be disappointed. I brought my son to Mount Marty and I wanted to take him to a great steak dinner before his mother and I left. He ordered the Prime Rib and I knew instantly he was going to be disappointed when they put it in front of him. It was fatty and extremely tough. My wife traded his PR for her serloin. Since I knew she doesn't like PR, I traded my Tbone for the PR. All this at premium prices. My Tbone had more fat than the PR but I knew she would not eat it all. Even the serloin was bland. Looked good but no taste. As we walked in, we got looks (maybe because I was the only Hispanic on the place) but I did not feel uncomfortable (no whispering or anything like that). But everyone else seemed to know each other. Leave this relic to the Yankton Supper Club, the next time I am town I will return to Jodeans for better food at better prices. If you live in Yankton, come to California, you can go to the Tenderloin in La Verne and get twice the quality at half the price. Their blue cheese is great though! read more

Best steak in the area and throughout the country. Dry aged beef that is tender enough to be cut with a fork. Price includes salad and side. While some have said it is a littke expensive, I think the price is extremely reasonable. I travel throughout the country and Europe, and this filet tops most entrees. Ok so being from Dallas Texas and looking for a good steak place this was it. Are they slow here yes, a steak of perfection should never be rushed. The blues cheese chips were absolutely fabulous and fried mushrooms delicious. Dinner salad had not one bit of wiltedness to it. Oh my my rare filet was so soft and tender so delicious. Took some time but doesn't matter to me. Here on business trip to buy Real Estate. We have very spoiled pallets and this place met our expectations. If you want a good steak stop looking and come here. The bread was so soft and home made garlic dressing was amazing. I love this place because of the red carpet and dark look. Wine pours are huge the beautiful crystal water glasses are fancy. This place is fantastic for out of towners with fancy pallets. Raymond said absolutely fantastic. All of us will be back. Sandy is so sweet and pleasant. So hey Texans this place will satisfy your steak dinner wants. Everything is bigger in Texas and here they make sure they measure up to our standards. So glad I listened to the locals about this place and not some random person with a negative review. Oh The Black Steer Stopped in for dinner while visiting my daughter and son in law. Had a wonderful old time feel to it that I really enjoyed,I enjoyed talking to all the staff as well seemed to be a family ran joint which I really liked. Wife and I had the T Bone steak. And we both enjoyed it,the house salad was fresh and very good don't worry about running out of salad dressing because your gonna get plenty for sure. The drinks were also a great pour. read more

What a waste of time, my family decided to give this place a try. When we arrived there were only two couples in the restaurant other than us three. We waited for fifteen minutes before the host acknowledged that we were there. Only to ask if we had a reservation cause that was really all they could accept because of staffing issues apparently their waiters and waitresses can make more sitting at home according to her "Just Wow" completely unprofessional !! The whole thing was sad we were looking forward to trying a new place. If reservations are a requirement try posting that information possibly on the door or online maybe that's just to obvious of a point. We as potential customers don't need to hear about staffing issues in your establishment for us we will never return. read more

Growing up in Yankton, "the steer" has always been a point of contention in the community, but for my money there is not a more unique restaurant within Yankton. It harkens back to a time of supper clubs, and real cocktails, a time when dining out was an event. Every time I come back to Yankton, I always make a point to stop here. You will not have a better steak in town, and that's that. Walking into the Black Steer is like stepping back in time. A family business for as long as I can remember, the food has never disappointed me. Frankly, "the steer" is outdated, but that's its charm, and having said that, at no time does the restaurant ever feel run-down. Wood paneling, red carpet, and a big fireplace only compliment a stiff drink and a tender steak. I've never had the seafood here because why would you, it's the midwest. Come here for the steak. They cut their own meat, and it's always cooked to perfection. Service can be hit or miss, but for me it has always be pleasant. It saddens me to think that restaurants like these are few and far between, but let's hope this Yankton staple will be around for many years to come. read more

I am from San Francisco Bay Area visiting my childhood friend in Yankton, SD. I took him & his wife to dinner one night & I was looking for the best place to dine & this where I found. Our order on the steaks, takes longer to come out coz. they waited for the right temperature of the charcoal to get the perfect flavor, juiciness of the steak. The chef came out & explain the whole process of preparing the steaks. This is one of the last family owned restaurant in the area which they owned since 1954. By the time we left, we felt that we are part of the family. I was stuffed & very satisfied!!! By the way, don't forget to ask their homemade hot fudge sundae which is not in the menu though. They had to use a forklift to get me out of the restaurant :)). I highly recommend this place & the best steak place in town. read more

I know Yankton isn't a dining mecca by any means and this wasn't my first time eating here, but I really can't say a lot of positive things. Bill for two was $82 including tip, so for that money you do expect a decent meal. Now back to the start....we sat at the bar area and were asked about 5 times if we wanted a table. I kept asking if it was OK to eat at the bar and they said yes. However, they kept asking. It's bascially a few old ladies that run this place so I'm not sure if it was personality, mood, etc. but I felt like I wasn't wanted to sit at the bar and eat. Salad/bread. Basic lettuce, carrot, radish, tomato. They do make their own dressings and the french/garlic is what I had. I would honestly say the salad was the best part of my meal. My gf got the NY strip and I got the ribeye. They serve it with au jus. The flavor on the steak really wasn't there, mild saltiness of the au jus was all. We bot got baked potatoes and they were cooked properly, but again very basic witout seasoning. I don't see any reason to go back. Prob head over to Minervas instead next time. read more

When you need a quite night out are not in a hurry this is a great place quiet enough for good conversation, drinks, and a great steak! The steaks are charcoal broiled in built in grills and served on hot carts with aujuice. The steaks are not really seasoned - just good pieces of meat cooked right. As for the service - it takes time to get the food but my water glass is never empty for long! I really like the non rushed feeling.. Been coming here for 15 years for the annual Czech Days Festival. Fantastic steaks this time, extremely well seasoned and all cooked perfectly. They could use some support staff so the waitresses are no running ragged and taking extra time due to having so many tables. read more

My friends and I ate at The Black Steer Restaurant in Yankton, SD last night and had the most sumptuous, delicious steaks and prime rib. The service was terrific and the waitresses were very attentive. It is a family owned restaurant and has been for over 50 years. It's a wonderful place to dine. Believe the other negative reviews. I found this restaurant on yelp and chose to overlook the 2 negative reviews because the other 2 were so complimentary. The negative reviews are right on and not exagerrated. One word TERRIBLE. Terrible service, terrible food, and atrocious management. The manager being the worst. Overall the menu is rather expensive, so I ordered the fried chicken. When they brought out the meal my potatoe was rock hard. No big deal, send it back. While waiting for the potatoe I took a bit of the chicken breast...frozen in the middle. Never had that happen, again thinking I'll just send it back they'll refry some chicken. Sent it back and 3 minutes later my frozen chicken came back they had just redipped it. Gross. I did bite into that chicken and I can guarantee they reuse the grease. It was disgusting and leathery. I told the waitress I didn't want it and was no longer hungry. She apologized and said she'd talk to the manager. I assumed it would be taken off the bill, she came back and said they wanted me to pay for the sides...again I"m thinking uhhh okay but if it was $3 whatever. The total for the sides $8...out of an $11 meal. Valuing half a chicken at $3. The waitress directed me to the cashier who was extremely rude and refused to do anything about it. The cook or manager from behind the wall was telling us she hadn't used the large fryer hence the error - as if I need to know why they knew they had made a mistake. When they continued to refuse to do anything about the bill and they stated "you can go to dairy queen and get a bad salad for $5" . I have never ever been treated this horribly. HORRIBLE experience!! I should have left when my friend and I were passed over for seating when we first got there. It took almost 20 minutes for us to be served after being seated, and then OVER TWO HOURS before we got our food. I would not have had a problem waiting, but when all the people around us had been there less time and were getting their food before us, that's what irritated me. After two hours I wanted to leave but the manager came up to us and YELLED at us and said if we didn't take the food and pay for it, that she was going to call the police. If you go there, be prepared to wait and pay, no matter what horrible experience you get. They wouldn't even compensate by letting us have our $7 appetizer for free!! Took my wife out the The Black Steer for Valentine's Day, this would be our first time visiting this establishment and i will have to say we will NEVER be back. I'm not sure what their regular menu looks like but they had a special menu for Valentine's Day. We started our meal with an order of onion rings, which were pretty tasty . . . so far so good. Although, we were disappointed because the only appetizers they offered were fried onion rings, fried cheese balls, fried mushrooms, and fried shrimp. ALL of the appetizers were fried, felt like we were in a dive bar when we saw the appetizer menu. I ended up getting the prime rib, which came with a salad and my choice of fries. My wife order the filet mignon, which came with a salad and her choice of baked potato. After the appetizers we started on our salad, we each ordered blue cheese dressing with our salads. The blue cheese came out in a bowl with an extremely healthy amount so we could decide on how much we wanted on our salads. I really thought they brought us out the wrong thing because this "dressing" looked exactly like mayonnaise and had the same exact consistency as mayonnaise. And upon tasting it, yup, it tasted like mayo with blue cheese chunks. It was thee WORST blue cheese dressing I have ever tasted in my life!! I tried a little on my salad and it just tasted like mayo on lettuce; seriously go to your fridge, take a piece of lettuce, dip it in mayo, eat it, and you will have the same exact salad that I had at the Black Steer. After a very disappointing salad we were then served our meat!! It came out looking absolutely amazing but my first bite showed me that my eyes had deceived me. My prime rib was gristly and lacking in flavor. It was one of the least enjoyable prime ribs I have experienced. BUT the fries that came with meal were very good. If you want a delicious prime rib in the area I would highly recommend Red's Steakhouse in Vermillion, best prime rib I've found in South Dakota!! The only reason I gave The Black Steer 2 stars was because my wife's filet was delicious. It was fall apart tender, melt in your mouth delicious. I will give credit where credit is due but this in no way can make up for my meal and the horrible salad dressing. All things considered I would never recommend this to anyone that I actually care about. after a full stomach of bad food and a $75 bill to boot my wife and I would have rather eaten burgers and drank beers at a local bar for $25 and burned the other $50 and we would have been happier. read more

The Black Steer was excellent! It was akin to going back to the days of true supper clubs and the atmosphere was fantastic! We had the homemade potato chips w/bleu cheese and green onions, and they were fantastic. The warm bread brought to table was a nice accompaniment. I had the Prime Rib and she had the Sirloin, both of which had great flavor and were cooked perfectly! When we first looked at the menu, we were concerned about the prices, but when you calculate in the bread, salad, and baked potato, it isn't outrageously priced, especially for the event it becomes. As someone who relishes past eras, I was enthralled with the atmosphere and more than happy with the meal we were presented. Our waitress was quite attentive, as were the other staff.
