My daughter and I stumbled into Black Rose Gaming in Temple not knowing what to expect -- and left having one of the best nights we've had in a long time.
I'll be honest: I almost talked myself out of going. The photos online showed what looked like a serious gamer's space, and as two Pokémon card collectors with no real background in broader TCG or tabletop gaming culture, I wasn't sure we'd fit in. That hesitation was entirely on me -- and it was entirely wrong.
From the moment we walked in, the staff at Black Rose Gaming made us feel like we belonged there. Before we even had a chance to look around, one of the guys behind the counter welcomed us like old friends. He asked my daughter when the last time she'd opened a pack was -- she gave him a look that answered the question -- and then, to our complete surprise, handed her an entire booster pack he'd just opened shortly before we came in from the new Ascended Heroes set, ex card and all, just because. That single gesture set the tone for everything that followed.
We ended up staying for hours. The atmosphere, the people, the sheer love for the hobby that fills that space -- it's the kind of thing you can't manufacture. It's what separates a genuinely great local game store from everywhere else. We made a friend that night just by being there.
I also have to mention the selection, because it deserves its own moment: Black Rose Gaming carries more Pokémon packs than I've seen anywhere -- and in Temple, it's the most reliable place we've found to consistently get them. No picked-over shelves, no scalper markups, none of the repackaged product that fills the shelves at big-box stores. Just sealed Pokémon packs the way they're supposed to be. Whether you're picking up a single pack or stocking up, they have what you're looking for. For a Pokémon collector in this area, that alone makes them irreplaceable. And while Pokémon is our world, it was hard not to notice that the selection extends well beyond it -- Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Lorcana, and One Piece cards were all represented, and One Piece in particular had a presence that honestly made us want to learn the game just so we'd have an excuse to come back sooner.
By the time we were wrapping up, the staff went so far out of their way to take care of us that I honestly didn't know how to respond. And when my daughter mentioned her birthday, one of the gentlemen from behind the counter wished her a happy birthday and sent her home with a gift she's going to remember for years to come. That kind of genuine kindness is rare in any retail space -- and almost unheard of in a hobby shop.
If you're a Pokémon collector, a trading card game newcomer, or just someone who's been holding back because you're not sure it's your crowd -- trust me, go anyway. Black Rose Gaming is the kind of local card and gaming community that makes you wonder why you waited. Lola and I are already talking about when we can get back.
