I've never been one for tattoos. It wasn't that I was against them, per se. But I always felt that, if I were to ever get one, it would have to be something incredibly meaningful to me... something I wouldn't regret years later. At the time, I couldn't imagine what that would be. Well, as many now know, my mom passed away last month after a long battle with emphysema. When she was hospitalized, and we knew how grave the situation was, that's when it clicked: I wanted to get a tattoo in my mom's honor. I had hoped that it would've been years down the line... but once she passed, I suddenly had a sense of urgency. I felt completely lost without my mom. Every moment since that horrible day, I've been wearing a necklace she gave me, but it wasn't enough. I had found a birthday card she'd given me a couple of years ago that said "Love forever and beyond" in her gorgeous handwriting - and I knew. I told my friend Jenn that I wanted to get this done, and she said, "I know just the place." She sent me the link to Black Rose, and I decided to look up some of their artists' artwork. The first person's work I looked at was Chelsie... and almost immediately, I came upon a tattoo she'd done of a father's handwriting, saying, "Love ya, Daddy" - the exact same idea I had for mine. I don't believe in fate, or signs, or anything of the sort... but it struck me all the same. A deeper review of her work, and seeing how amazing she was at script, just cemented the fact that I wanted her to do my tattoo. After a brief consultation (I mean, mine really is quite straightforward), I had my appointment set for this past Friday, and had two of my best friends (Jenn and Greshka) along for moral support. Chelsie was great and really put me at ease, chatting with us the whole time as I occasionally squeezed Jenn's hand through the pain. My tattoo, that I thought would only take maybe 15 minutes, took nearly an hour because of how precise she was with the lines. The end result turned out even more incredible than I expected. It looked like my mom had taken a pen right to my skin... and obviously that was an emotional moment for me. I spent the rest of the evening staring at it and smiling through my tears. Eighteen hours later, I was back at Black Rose... this time with Jenn squeezing my hand as she got her own tattoo from Chelsie. She absolutely loves her end result as well. I cannot speak highly enough about how talented Chelsie is. I'm going to be able to carry a physical memory of my mom with me for the rest of my life, and I'm so grateful for that. read more

I've been looking for a regular tattoo shop close to home for a while now. I've been to several, but I couldn't find a place that gave me good enough vibes for me to want to let them work on me. Over the years I probably drove by Black Rose tattoo shop over a thousand times and I never noticed it until 2 weeks ago. I was stuck in traffic and looked over and I saw a sign that read Tattoo. First thing I thought was this had to be oldest plaza on Hillsboro, but I wasn't going anywhere. I decided to go in and check this place out. I felt comfortable from the time I walked in the door. There were 4 artists working and I was greeted by all 4. Chelsie was the only free at the time so I started talking to her about what I wanted done. I knew I had to have her do my tattoo because she was so excited about my vision that she started throwing ideas at me on how to make it better. At first I only wanted a clock. She was able to come up with something way better. This shop is very laid back and every artist in there is really down to earth and talented. The vibe is chill, the shop is pretty clean (even the bathroom!!!), but the real gem is ERIK! He is the kindest, funniest, gentlest, most accommodating artist I've ever encountered. He tattooed my brother and the piece was a vibrant forearm piece. Generally, my brother is a closed off person but Erick's welcoming spirit allowed my brother to relax and open up. I told Erik I was about to travel soon and really wanted a tat. Two days later, he opened the shop a bit early just to squeeze me in PLUS convinced me to make it a two part piece for him to finish when I return. I'm so excited to collaborate with him on it! I went to see my friend get a tattoo of an albino sea turtle on her back. Gilbert one of the owners did the tattoo. This place from the moment you walk through the door is clean, décor is cool, and you know you are in a good place to get a tattoo. Everyone was friendly and helpful and made us feel very comfortable. Gilbert was a blast to hang out with and an amazing artist. He suggested she get water to accentuate the white of the turtle and wow what a difference it made. The tattoo looks exactly like the picture (see pics). This is the real deal tattoo shop. The artists are all excellent, shop is super clean and sterile. Nice people too, well everyone I met. When I asked Gil about design he's super honest what would look best to go with my existing ink compared to my ideas. That shows a commitment to giving quality not just appeasement. Meaning, he never wants to give a bad tattoo despite money... Gil did my forearm sleeve from scratch. His freehand work is amazing, super talented, it makes my other ink look bad! I can't say enough about the creativity and skill level of Gil... I won't go anywhere else. Also just look at the portfolio of the artists on the Black Rose website, there's real talent here, not like the stencil off the wall dime a dozen shops in South FL. This has to be one of the best quality shops in South Florida. I'm going to try and post my pics of Gil's work of my arm. Let me let you in on a little secret...I have a tattoo. Yes, as of November, for my birthday, I decided to get a tattoo, my very first one. A friend recommended Jimmy, at Black Rose, and I had my doubts. Obviously, having never had a tattoo, I was nervous and unsure of what level of pain to expect, plus I expected something sleazy, like on TV, and probably filthy and unsafe. Not only that, but this is a hell out of the way for me. My friend kept fighting me on it and saying that Jimmy is the man, and if I went elsewhere, I would regret it. Mind you, he went through hell trying to get a hold of Jimmy and track him down as he had used Jimmy several years ago several times and he was no longer at that shop. I was convinced, so I drove all the way out to Deerfield to meet this Jimmy guy I had heard so much about. I was surprised that Jimmy was so young, funny, conversational and down to earth, but I hit it off right away. He made me feel comfortable and the place was very clean. I also met Nate, one of the other artists and he was also a friendly guy, and talented. They have a questionnaire you fill out about your health, which some have said is not even used in other places. I showed Jimmy a picture of what I wanted and he made his own interpretation...freehand. No, he did not use a stencil or pattern or whatever they call it, he drew it from his imagination, giving it his own spin. I must say, he is a beast. What a talented artist! I was amazed and my worries about ending up with a crooked, shaky nightmare of a tattoo were quickly evaporated. We were there for about 5 hours, way after the shop had closed, but he always took his time and never rushed me out, nor did he ask me to come back to add in the color. All that time, he was cracking jokes. It wasn't nearly as painful as I anticipated, and he said that if it didn't heal well or the color faded, he'd touch it up. This after giving me an amazing deal on his work. I no longer felt nervous or scared, and he took breaks in between to let my body rest. He even bought me a soda when I said I hadn't drank anything all day, so my sugar levels wouldn't drop too much during the intense session. I even got a free t-shirt to sleep in. Very nice, down to earth people. If you're looking for a clean shop with talented artists, a friendly, non-intimidating crowd and reasonable prices, I recommend coming here. read more

Two years ago I went to get my belly button pierced by them and for one I had CRAZY amounts of pain (couldn't bend down or anything) it wasn't until last spring of 2015 when I went to Boca Body Art and they checked the piercing and that is when they informed me that the person at Black Rose Tattoo did NOT even pierce my belly button. They COMPLETELY MISSED IT (HOW ????? I was tattooed by Brandon Bopko. I posted a picture of my tattoo where you can add a picture to the black rose tattoo yelp page. If you look at the top two pictures they were taken three days after I was tattooed. you can see how extremely swollen and red it is. The bottom two were taken almost 8 weeks after I was tattooed. You can see how scarred and raised the tattoo is. I was concerned so I went to the shop the day after I was tattooed and Brandon was not there so I showed Gil and asked if it looked ok because I was in excruciating pain. I couldn't bend my arm. Someone who worked there mentioned that it looked like cellulitis and that two other clients got cellulitis before me after getting tattooed by Brandon. It's been about eight weeks and my tattoo is so scarred and raised. Someone emailed me by the name of John and told me that he has been around that shop for 15 years and that I'm the only one who has ever come in complaining about a scarred tattoo and that the reason why it's scarred is because he said I am "dirty" that "I don't know how to take care of a tattoo, and that I shouldn't even have tattoos." I have a half sleeve as well as my fore arm, and ribs tattooed. They were done by another artist and I have never had an issue or scarred tattoo. He also told me I was "barking up the wrong tree" because I am not happy with the way my tattoo came out. It really upsets me that Brandon and the owner of the shop John Wylie are aware of the situation and could care less about making it right. I paid $400 for this tattoo and I expected to get what I paid for. I now have to look at this scarred tattoo every day that I am not happy with it at all. It makes me very self conscious and upset that Black Rose tattoo won't do anything about it to fix the situation or my tattoo. read more
