The owner/artist was friendly and straight to the point, which I appreciated -- no pressure, just honest communication. Prior to Black Moth Tattoo, I have had exactly 0 tattoos, and after I left, I still had exactly 0 tattoos. The NMT, on the other hand, now has two different tattoos. His first two professional tattoos, to be exact. We're not counting of course the two and a half he decided to give himself using a sewing needle and some ink. One of those will definitely need a 'cover up' that he will be getting once he's 18 and can pay for it himself. I have nothing against tattoos in general, I'm just not interested in getting one for myself. My son, on the other hand, has always wanted them, and up until now, I held fast with the "When you're 18 and can pay for them yourself" rule. What changed? I agreed to two specific ones that had strong significance for him on the condition that they are small enough to cover if needed. He's made remarkable strides in his self-care and overall maturity that I thought should be acknowledged. So, off to Black Moth, his choice, for the work to be done. First, a consultative visit with Steve, who is the owner and artist there. Very nice young man, asked good questions, gave me a list of documents I'd need to provide to ensure I was this 17 year old's legal parent, and a cash deposit. A week later we arrive. I provide the documents needed. He hands us some paperwork that he insists we take time to read. We do, fill out what's needed, and he goes 'under the needle'. The first piece is very small and was a quick piece. The second was more elaborate and took time. He amicably chatted with the NMT, I think to distract him from pain, though my son insisted that it wasn't as bad as he thought. Please note when you read this that my son is a former competitive gymnast who has competed with injuries, so his pain tolerance is generally higher than the norm. Steve gave us after-care instructions, reviewing them carefully with both of us, patiently answering questions and making sure we had a good understanding. A month later and they look great. People with tattoo experience have told him what a good job this was, and the NMT is delighted with them both. I think Steve has great skills. More importantly, he is a person who takes great care in making sure that you are heard and that you have the information you need to make informed decisions. He is patient. He is thoughtful. He is deliberate. Should I ever decide to 'get ink' myself, I would choose him. I'm confident the NMT will be back as soon as he's 18 and has his own money. read more

I visited Black Moth one evening with my husband and walked out with an appointment for a tattoo! I have had an idea for a tattoo for a long time but was very nervous about the process and hadn't yet found an artist that could faithfully represent the artwork that I wanted. It is a drawing done by my sister years ago. I arrived on the day of my appointment expecting to spend several hours there, and before I knew it, my tattoo was finished! The whole process took just over an hour. Steve is very talented and knowledgeable and made me feel at ease. He did such a wonderful job and gave me thorough care instructions so my tattoo healed quickly and beautifully. The studio area is very clean and it is clear that Steve takes great care to ensure that the equipment is sterile and in top working condition. I felt very comfortable getting my tattoo here and I am thrilled with the result! Can't wait to go back for my next ink! There is also a gallery with the most unique collection of rotating artists I have seen outside of Philly. Steve personally curates the art in the gallery, and it is incredible.
