I was charged 250 dollars for what I was told would be a thorough itemized estimate to have a wood stove Installed. I waited three weeks with almost no response to my calls and emails only to receive a woefully inadequate estimate missing most of what I asked for but managing to estimate parts costs for the handful of items they listed ( but did not itemize ) that far exceeded retail. No. I called asking to speak to someone about my estimate? No response. I found another company locally and got a complete job at half the price that I am very happy with. BM outright stole 250 from me and they still have not called me back. read more

Black Magic rebuilt my chimney in 2021 - the cost was $8000.00. In early 2023, I had a fire in the stove pipe between the wood stove and the wall. The fire department cracked the mortar. I called the company to do the repair- the quote was nearly $16,000. Because of the quote I submitted a claim to my homeowners insurance. As result of the claim, my homeowners insurance company dropped me. I found an alternative company to do the repairs- their cost was $2300. read more

I needed an 1832 chimney inspected and restored to service. I was told I would first need a $358.00 chimney cleaning and inspection before I could get an estimate for restoring the fireplace to a functioning condition. A video camera was to be dropped down the flue to determine the work needed. Two men showed up with a shop vac and did run it up the chimney. Perhaps the video inspection was made. I was told I needed a metal stove pipe/liner. Sounded reasonable. However, after the cursory cleaning, the chimney inspector never produced a bid for the additional services. The visit was in August. Several telephone calls to the company produced promises of a bid for the project to come shortly. Finally, in November, as I was in Manchester, I dropped by the office and was told a bid would be sent by e-mail in a couple of days. No email. I would place this business as slightly above the sorts of pseudo-services offered by Irish Traveler groups that I encountered in Texas. But, not by much. read more

As newcomers to the Arlington area, we contacted Black Magic about cleaning the chimney of our condo fireplace, which the seller said hadn't been cleaned in many years. From the first phone conversation with a very pleasant employee, Sherry, to the report from Mike that the job was done and no structural problems were detected, our experience with Black Magic was outstanding. The sweeps, Mike and Cory, were there within 48 hours of my phone call, right when they said they'd be there. O stars. First of all, they have a terrible reputation among Shaftsbury and Bennington residents for charging through the roof for their estimates and for making money on appointment-setting. Secondly, they purposefully do not confirm site visits and send emails on federal holidays and weekends so that you cannot reach them to cancel within 48hrs. to cancel. Thirdly, the lady on the phone with me just now started elevating her voice and reprimanding me- horrible customer service! Tried getting them to install a chimney liner for my fireplace insert. After trying to contact them for 2 weeks leaving messages, I finally left one that pointed out that I have been waiting 2 weeks. They called back and set up an appointment to come and give me an estimate. I waited around all day and they were a no show. I ended up calling someone else to get the work done. A week after the no show appointment Black magic called back and left me a message to set up another appointment. At that point I was through dealing with them. Rude and overpriced. Jenn on the telephone is one of the more condescending and rude customer service people you will deal with in your life. This company does not return phone calls, blows off appointments with no communication; and overall is just rude and not that great to deal with. I had a few estimates done, this was the only company that specializes in chimney work that I had out for an estimate, they were a chimney installation and repair company and the rest were general contractors , they were over 600$ higher than the highest estimate I received which was 1800$ before them and they were $2495 but also the most professional, the first crew that came in did good work, woodstove chimney was installed in about 3 hours , they didn't have the fire shield I ordered installed so a second crew came out for that install, the younger kid talked about nothing other than being high and his favorite things he likes smokingto the other guy, asked my wife who was going out for a cigarette what she was smoking and tried involving her in his rant, they acted like the 3 stooges minus one, they let themselves into my shop downstairs without asking to work down there, seemed a little shady to me, came upstairs and installed the shielding, the older guy wanted to go get a level but the kid insisted on putting it up without waiting, the shielding is visibly crooked, the older guy then took a grinder and cut a really screwed up looking hole in the shielding with overlapping cuts in the shielding for the plug outlet and only cut it for the top plug usage , there are screws left hanging out that I had to screw in, I believe a 2 year old might have done a better job, I went down into my shop a few days after to get a few tools to find my saw and a few other things missing, I've just reviewed the security tapes and watched the workers bringing the shielding and 2 other tools into my house and one making multiple trips out to the vehicles with what looked to be my missing tools while the other stayed upstairs working, I'm now involving the state police in this, I wouldn't recommend them to anyone, their work absolutely is garbage and your stuff walks off if you don't watch them , they sent me an email asking to review how they did, I sent it back before I realized my stuff walked away and reviewed the video of them loading it, I left a review of how everything was left and heard nothing back from them, they quickly cashed the check and gave me a screw you, seeing as I have heard nothing back from them, and I don't want their thieves back here and I'll be contacting the bbb and all the agencies they claim to be in good standing with, have fun guys, you screw me, I screw you, check around for all the reviews I leave you on different sites, I'll have pics up of them walking out with my stuff as soon as state police t Harry L. I apologize for the way I conducted this review, I'm still extremely pissed about this, I never heard back from you until this week after responding to the email you sent asking me to review your work on your own site, the first crew that came in here did awesome work, they were professional in doing their job, acted professionally, my beef is with the second crew that came in, the younger kid rushed through the job and hung the shielding visibly crooked as seen in the picture and conducted himself very unprofessionally, I don't care what you do on your spare time but when I hire professionals to come do a job, I don't want to hear about getting stoned, the older guy came in after and used a grinder to cut an extremely sloppy looking hole that ruined the look of the shield, I asked the younger kid to have whoever was in charge to call me after they told me they were done and never heard back and then the stuff I found missing a few days later and watched walking out my front door on video afterwards added to this, please text me about the situation at the number given or email me, I prefer things in writing at Update, nothing was ever done to replace or try and fix the hack job his team of so called professionals did. The owner gets on here and runs his mouth to do damage control and ignores my emails. Pretty sad to run a business like that, police said they'd talk to the employees but to date, I haven't got anything back that they stole, I recommend staying way the hell away from this business if you don't wanna get screwed read more

The cleaning was done well, let me first say that. I unfortunately fell for the "we always do an inspection /report" pitch, which allowed him to tell me how there was something in my chimney that had to be fixed. Since they did a "chimneyoscopy" (camera up the flu), I asked them to show me where the problem was. He showed me what looked like a seam or sloppy ceramic coating on part of the flu, which didn't seem like anything. I asked him to write it up and send me something. Sure enough, the quote arrives for $6000.00 (in nice round numbers for the components) to replace the flu in a new home! I called in another firm to do an inspection and they found no problem. Its clear to me that this guy was probably working on commission. I do not recommend. read more
