We are glad that we went to Sean's pub in the evening. We had wanted to hear some live Irish music and lo and behold they had it the night we went. They have live music on Mondays and Fridays. The atmosphere was quaint with a warm feel. The food and service were exceptional! We had the Warm Goats Cheese Crostini and Fish Cakes which were recommended by Sean. They were both very tasty and we highly recommend both! All of the beer tasted fantastic! They must be really diligent about cleaning their draught lines! The pint of Guinness was the best I had in Ireland including the brewery itself! They had beer from a craft brewery called McGargles. The pale ale from them was very tasty! All in all this is a great little pub and not to be missed while in Adare!

I had their signature hot tea & whisky toddy with lemon, cloves and a bit of sugar. I also had a few Bushmills as one does. They have a full espresso service as well for a quick daytime pick-me-up but honestly, as I believe day-drinking was invented in Ireland, a coffee functions more like a gateway drug here with a pint or something quick to follow. It should be known that the prices are a bit more than other spots on main street but the slight uptick is worth it for the vast collection of curiosities and knick knacks that line the shelves and the general inimitable vibe--it's like a mini museum with drinks! The owners/bartenders/hosts are very kind and cheerful. I had done a bit of shopping earlier at the butcher's for a dinner party the following day and they refrigerated my purchases until I was ready to leave. Mr. and Mrs. Hayes, the owners and operators of this establishment, are incredibly friendly, welcoming people. They took care of us! As Americans in a foreign land, they recognized that we were unfamiliar with how things are done in Ireland. During the week, the restaurants shut down around 430p making it almost impossible to find food in the country villages. On several occasions, they extended the dinner hours for me and my traveling companion and on one occasion, made us a dinner off-menu especially for us even when the restaurant had closed for the evening. J. Hayes Pub/Restaurant is special indeed. The food, the people, and the welcoming atmosphere of home is something that I have never experienced in all my travels abroad. We went to Birr to see if we could possibly track them down. The first place we stopped at was Kelly's pub. We had the best service and ate the best food. The soup was served with fresh homemade brown bread & Irish butter and the cottage pie was served piping hot with a rich flavour that felt not only delicious but nutritious too, The vegetables we were served tasted like they had just been picked. We asked the waitress if she could direct my American friend regarding sources of possible information on her long lost Irish relatives. Before I knew what was happening the owner John drove us to meet her family. He made phone calls, got their address and brought us there himself. I was so proud that my friend got to see the magic of Irish hospitality and selfless acts of kindness towards a stranger.
