Small town Rerik is about 3.5 hours north of Berlin by the Baltic Sea. It's filled with salty sea…read moreair, happy Germans enjoying the sunshine (in the summer!) and the quiet relaxing vibe that all of us city people crave every once in awhile. While Berliners are used to seeing Asians in their international city, it's not the case in Rerik. I did get a few stares but the worst was when the staff at Captain Flint said "NO FOTOS!" Oops. Guess only Asians take photos of their food? o_0 My fiancé has been here before and does not recommend the entrees. However, their fish sandwiches are FANTASTIC! We ate here 3x over the course of 4 days that we were in the area. And how can I not? these sammiches are cheap! It's best to grab these to go and sit at one of the benches outside and people watch. My fave is the Backfisch and it's only €2.50! the fish filet is fried nicely, flaky and has a smidgen of aioli and a single lettuce. Super simple, super filling! I also LOVED the very very sour Matjes (herring style) with raw onions. Intense flavors sure to give you bad breath ;-) The maritime décor of the restaurant is so fitting for the setting. But the name made me laugh since where else can you find an American sounding restaurant but in the middle of small town Rerik?! Good times.

Hungry in Ostseebad Rerik? You'll better be hungry for seafood in this small and sleepy Baltic Sea…read moretown or you'll be starving to death. Captain Flint is one of the few restaurants at the "Haff" which is a market place-like square in the middle of the town. Here you'll get traditional Northern German cuisine which mostly consists of some sort of (fried) fish, fried potatoes, and green salad with an undefined sauce. Solid food, nothing special - you'll get a good idea about what the folks eat here every day of the year. Portion size is okay (see pictures), and so is the value (Brathering mit Bratkartoffeln, 9 Euro, Matjesfilet mit Bratkartoffeln, 10 Euro). The dining room has a nice maritime theme and it's pretty cozy in there. Be prepared that you'll eat with a lot of older folks - most of them seem to be bored to death. Funnily enough, they don't really talk to each other but will stare at you while you finish your meal. Oh Baltic Sea, you are so joyful and optimistic.
