Anyway after battling the heat and crowds we looked for somewhere to eat outside of the chaos. On entering we were asked if we wanted to sit indoors or not, the sun was blazing but inside was cooler despite there being no air con. The walls were painted red and a stuffed peacock guarded the entrance..we were the only ones to sit indoors. Anyway the menu is pretty pricey...and offered the usual sushi dishes such as sashimi, various rolls, miso soup etc. To start I had a €5 plum wine which despite its lovely vessel it was the most expensive mouthful I have ever purchased. For mains we shared €8 scallops, beef wesu , spicy tuna roll and a piece of tuna and salmon nigiri.. it came to well over €50. Everything was tasty there is no denying that but it was too expensive for what you received and I have eaten in a lot of sushi restaurants. I even ate all of the complimentary prawn crackers as I refused to pay any more. Overall pleasant enough staff but prepare to have a empty wallet and stomach afterwards.

About the food, it's kind of expensive and you don't get a lot of food. But the food is really good and makes up for how much it costs. But what makes it a 5 - star rating for me is that they gave us free marshmallows and a little fire to roast them on.

The streets were packed with families and the boats in the harbor were all lit up. The restaurants were all filled to capacity but on our third try we were able to get seated at Fuego. Fuego is beautiful inside and all the tables face giant windows on the marina. You can also dine on the outside terrace. Even in the cold temperatures people were bundled up eating and drinking. From the service, drinks, and the food our experience was wonderful. The Long Islands were strong and packed a punch. We started with a bowl of creamy tomato and smoked paprika soup. It was excellent. Good flavor and consistency. From there we had the seafood trio. Wonderful presentation of cod, gamba (prawns), and salmon. The flavorful burre noisette sauce was excellent. The steak was expertly grilled with a nice medium rare center. We passed on dessert but decided on coffee before heading back into the cold. Our experience at Fuego was great, five stars!

We stopped for lunch at the Fuego Bar & Grill, a classy, upscale pub around the corner from the boardwalk, where vendors peddle classic Dutch kitsch such as wooden shoes, traditional costume photography, postcards and other tourist bait (although the almost-next-door Cheese Factory Volendam and attached museum is absolutely worth the price of admission; you will not walk away with out a few wedges!). While not exactly traditional Dutch cuisine (the menu is similar to an American seafood and steakhouse, with some regional European flair), the steaks here were juicy and cooked to order, and to perfection. Salad was crisp and not drowned in dressing, and fries were thick, steak-cut and golden brown. While you won't get any adventure points for branching out and trying something new and exotic, you will have a hard time finding a better restaurant in Volendam.

Aka the shop for all your stroopwafel needs. I honestly never knew they came in so many flavors. So…read moremany. If nothing else, come for all the samples. And if you're able to attend one of their short demonstrations. It'll happen either in the basement with the full theater kitchen or in the back of the shop at a little counter. Either way, they'll give you some of what is made for a taste, and I never realized just how good freshly made, warm stroopwafel was. It is amazing. O.o We were part of a tour group and the demo came as part of the package. If you're on your own, I think it may cost a few euros. Woltje's Backerij, or Woltje's Bakery, consists of a shop (1st floor), bakery (downstairs), and museum (upstairs). They sell chocolates, ice creams, and waffles, but their main focus are stroopwafels. This is a Dutch signature wafer consisting of thinner brown sugar wafers with a caramel filling that was traditionally laid over the top of a steaming cup of tea, hence the circular shape. The founder/original baker was a woman (who I get the feeling was a pillar of her community) who apparently took the original recipe and made it her own into the Volendamse wafel. Nowadays, Woltje's seems to have stuck with the base recipe but have expanded in terms of variety with four base categories (caramel, speculaas/cookie butter, honey, and chocolate-covered). Seriously, there was an APPLE PIE stroopwafel. And I REALLY love the chocolate covered ones. Those are really satisfying bites. Again, we came as part of a tour group. The majority of the group were led down for a presentation in the basement kitchen. Meanwhile, we were in the group of remaining people (who couldn't fit) and were given a much more intimate, close-up presentation at a little counter set up in the back of the store. I think the basement presentation was more of how the bakery makes or used to make stroopwafels in large batches. While I would have liked the see the kitchen myself, but seeing the actual process closely and also a lot of fun. I'd love to try to make some myself. Overall, this was a really fun stop and I loved tasting everything. Most importantly, I thought the short demonstration was great and the discovery that warm stroopwafels are AMAZING. Additionally, the packs and tins they sell make for great souvenirs. For cookies, they're actually pretty sturdy and could actually take a bit of pressure. All of ours got back to the States without any problems.

Its a classic Dutch dessert consisting of two very thin crispy waffles with some sweet warm caramel syrup between them...its pure magic. BUT! You need to get it fresh, don't fall for the cold, dry and inferior prepackaged stroop waffles. For a mere €2, one of Woltje's divine Dutch divas will hand craft you a hot, fresh, caramel crispy stroop waffle..a perfect ratio of carb crunch, sweet caramel, and joy exploding in your mouth. This stand is in Volendam, a village in North Holland where you can really see the Netherlands' waterway engineering (the residential canals and reservoir being completely differently levels while side by side) and a stop in our tour. It involved us taking a boat across the Markermeer lake/reservoir to get there and, when you buy a snack from this stand, it's the Markermeer you're looking over in the background. Our tour guides actually arranged for us to have some free time and then meet back up in front of Harbour Restaurant De Lunch, the restaurant across the pathway from Poffertjes. I hadn't realized that poffertjes were made on the spot like this in a way that vaguely reminds of takoyaki stalls. Truthfully, I'm more a waffles person and not as big of a fan of pancakes. But the small size and the hotplate they use give it the very slightest bit of crispiness that I really like. Be aware that poffertjes generally can be served a sweet OR a savory dish, the savory often being specifically with cheese. This cart focuses on making sweet poffertjes with your chosen fruits, chocolate sauces, whipped cream, marshmallows, and candy. Price depends on size of the box, the number of toppings, and reflects that it's in a major tourist footpath/area (it practically overlooks where the tour boats dock), but it's really only a few euros. The pancakes themselves aren't too sweet, and I REALLY liked them with the strawberries. I think they went perfectly together. Meanwhile, my parents really liked it with the blueberries. And in hindsight, the milk chocolate sauce (definitely a sauce, as it doesn't coagulate given time) was a bit too sweet for my taste. Still good, but if I were to get it against, I'd get it with just the fruit. Overall, I think this was fun and I'm glad to check something else off my list of things to try on this list. It's a real treat (kind of reminded me of egg waffles) and an easy thing to grab then either sit down (there are plenty of benches along this road) and enjoy the view or continue sightseeing with. Of course, if you get it with chocolate sauce, get a LOT of napkins. Further research says that (as long as they're not soaked through) they can be microwaved to be eaten hot later, and that supermarkets would also have mixes for poffertjes the same way you have boxed pancake or waffle mix. Another souvenir, if you're interested. And if you're walking along the street/coast here, I'd recommend trying it.
