We've traveled here to take the train on a couple occasions because there's no Amtrak station near our home, but it will be reopening in Mobile again in the near future. We no longer fly so it's great we love the choo choo. This is the Crescent line that goes from New Orleans, which is under 8 hours by train and all the way to New York City. This is a decent Amtrak station that's open 24/7 365 with security present, and shares the terminal with Greyhound bus. Same-day parking is available for free but Amtrak cannot guarantee that a parking space will be available at the time of your trip. Overnight parking is also available with a nice big lot a block from the station itself. It is a staffed station with a ticket sales office, with restrooms and vending machines and an is ATM available. There are no Amtrak ticketing kiosks, payphones or WiFi and no elevator however there's an accessible platform that's barrier-free path from the drop-off area outside the station to the train platform. Wheelchair lift is available and for passengers who can't walk far or at all, they offer a wheelchair to help move around within the station. Unaccompanied child travel allowed from this station. This is a clean and comfortable station with helpful staff on hand, it's bright and airy with adequate outlets for charging your electronics throughout. Bottom line: It's not a NYC, DC or Philly station but it's got most of the amenities for departures and arrivals for our needs. read more

1. Replace the rude, customer unfriendly man at the desk We arrived 45 min before scheduled arrival, 1 hour 45 min before scheduled departure but were denied checking our luggage. It was so obvious this obnoxious person didn't care if we had to deal with luggage or not (we are elderly). So when we were called to the platform, we had to climb stairs with luggage that anybody else would have checked. What service?? 2. There is absolutely no parking, so uber it over and say goodbye to your loved ones at home. Don't believe anything you read about parking or leave home 3 hours early 3. Expect much better service from the conductor and anyone else who actually works on the train -all were great 4. Not a Bham issue, but expect the a/c to be about 65 F (layer up, even your head) , no scenery on the way to DC, comfortable seats that needed a pillow, a filthy bathroom floor no matter how often it was cleaned (don't wear socks or maybe wear removable paper booties) read more

Especially in the south, travelling by train is an underutilized mode of transportation. And to that extent, I can't really tell you who the blame is for the rating of Birmingham's train station. Only two trains come through a day and for the two trains that stop, at best 20 passengers each train disembark. Because of the low ridership, the station is minimally staffed so things like food, convenience items, and help is not available. Same is true for station upkeep. BHam train station could use a good renovation but it doesn't seem viable if it's not going to serve more people. But a few pluses: + The station is convenient to downtown. Being centrally located like that puts you position to make it to your destination regardless of where you have go. + There's a cool Birmingham mural close by near the bus depot side. + You can kinda walk across the tracks and take photos. read more

Really clean and nice station. The have a screen that shows all the Greyhound Buses and a booth for tickets. The track portion provides service to the Crescent trains that run between New Orleans and New York daily. If you planing a trip you only get one going each way once a day. The seats have built in charging stations so while you wait you can charge your phone or plug in your laptop. The also have security at the station. read more

Great place to watch the trains go by. However if you are not able to get up the stairs to the train then I don't recommend getting on Amtrak over there because they do not have a elevator to get on to get to the train. read more

The remodel of the station has taken way to long. I took the train to New Orleans in March and it doesn't look like any progress has been made, yet they opened the Greyhound station? The station is nasty, crowded, barely handicap accessible. It's a travesty. I'm disabled, walk with a cane and there's an 30 degree incline I'm supposed to somehow drag my luggage, medical devices, all with one hand so I can use my cane with the other hand. read more

I think American should start using trains more for travel. It's a great experience to see the country side. I'm taking a train from Birmingham to New Orleans. This station seems fairly new. It's super clean! I'm used to stations being almost like a homeless shelter but not this one! Restrooms are cleaner than Hilton's I've stayed at, yup...that clean! The staff are super friendly. The seats in the lobby of the station all have plugs to charge your devices. The only thing missing is WiFi. Great job Alabam'! read more

This $34 million dollar facility does not disappoint! I believe I was one of the first arrivals at the new train station. It's going to be a first class once the construction is complete (It looks like it's around 90%). Beware you are routed through the old location when arriving at the station. Keep in mind if you're carrying luggage that you will have to walk down a flight of stairs. There's tons of seating and it looks like they will have a food/gift shop available. There's limited street parking available because of all the construction in the surrounding area. The attendant said they are building a parking deck across the street but she did not say when it will be completed. I've always enjoyed taking the Amtrak from the former station and look forward to making new memories! read more

Overall I like that they updated the lobby inside waiting area along with the parking lot. It used to be very dated. The train infrastructure on the other hand probably needs a lot of work. Honestly it would be awesome if each major city in Alabama had a train station. I like riding the train. It's also nice when my mom comes to visit from Mississippi. read more

This seems to be a new station inside. Huge problem in that the tracks are upstairs and there is no elevator. There is a lift for ADA use but for passengers with bags this is a problem. In 2020 why is this even a discussion and not already handled. Staff isn't the friendliest or maybe they just don't like working on holidays. read more

Pros: Clean and new facility; overhead monitors keep you informed of arrivals. Sufficient security on site. No food available in the building, but there is a some a short walk away. When you find an employee they will direct you to an eatery that is open. It's a bus/train station, so some of the clients and hangers about made me a little uncomfortable; it's best to have a companion with you. Cons: Not enough information about luggage pickup from the train. No employees available to ask, former passengers lolling around with ???'s on their expressions. There is no signage indicating where to wait for your luggage, as all employees are dealing with the train arrival and passengers disembarking. I was told by a security officer it would be either down the hall or out in front of the building. It didn't take too long for the luggage to show up (down the hall, in good condition, accompanied by a friendly employee). Overall a HUGE improvement over the old facility, but please at least put up a sign about where to wait for your luggage. read more

This is a pretty small, dirty station that for some reason people visit just to use the bathroom and charge cell phones (people who are not Amtrak customers). The attendants can be really hard to locate sometimes. There was a woman who could not make it up the stairs to her train and had an asthma attack. Paramedics from 911 reached her quicker than any Amtrak worker. It was quite a little situation, very uncomfortable. Why were the Amtrak people so hard to find? Why couldn't this woman receive the help she needed being transported up to the train? Cheaper to leave out of Anniston, anyway. I think I'll start using the Anniston station. read more

The new station is much better than the old one! It's bright and open with a view of downtown on all sides. You can make easy bus connections to Greyhound, MAXX transit, and Megabus because they're all together in the new facility. There's a cafe next door and restaurants nearby. This is one of the best stations in the entire South! Atlanta needs one just like it! read more

I rated it two stars only because the baggage person is very helpful and the restroom is serviceable.Otherwise, it would barely be a one star. The. Station is not accessible for a person with mobility disability. Access to tracks is up a stairway. When I asked how to get a suitcase onto the aim, the ticket agent told me to check it or. Carry up the stairs. In other words, don't plan on having your possessions available for your long train ride, because they will be in the baggage car. We just returned form a round trip to New Orleans from Birmingham. The station looks like it is from the 50's with not enough places to sit on the worn out seats. It was a little inconvenient to carry our luggage up to the several steps up to the platform. On the first leg we traveled coach, had to hear hip-hop music for most of the trip from an inconsiderate passenger, had a restless and sometimes crying child behind us. The trip should have been 7 hours, well it took 10! We had several delays with no explanation. We decided to upgrade to a roomette to return. Wow! what a difference! Station is being remodeled so prepare for inconvenience when arriving. Lobby is old with worn out benches. Restrooms are clean. Parking is $5 per day across street in parking deck. Train trip is more relaxed than flying but it may take longer due to delays. Trip from Bham to NOLA is scheduled 7 hours...ours was late by almost 2 hours when arriving in NOLA. So don't be in a hurry if you go on a train trip. Other advantages over a plane is more leg room, you can walk about the train at all times, the view is awesome if you like looking out the window, you can easily work from your laptop computer, there are electrical outlets at each seat, cafe car is okay, dining car is also okay but both are expensive. I suggest bringing a cooler with your own snack and drinks. Try to travel in an even number of guest if you don't like sitting with a stranger or get a roomette.
