If you're in Oberammergau and are in the market for lederhosen or a dirndl (and who isn't?)…read moreTrachten-Werner is your place. They have several locations in Southern Bavaria (here, Fussen, Mittenwald and Bad Worishofen) and are kind of a department store for traditional clothing. Everything is here - kids, women and men's sections and a huge selection of styles, sizes and price points. For men they have a "complete suit" special which includes lederhosen, shoes, socks and a shirt for €199. Women's clothing ranges from high end handmade to much more reasonable (but still good quality). You won't find cheap costume skank-dirndls in leopard print for €30 here - but you will find something to make you look gorgeous for the next Oktoberfest! We scored a great embroidered shirt for the Mister (on sale!) and a pretty necklace for me. Great store!
Die Krawatte is a small, elegant vendor of made-to-measure clothing and quality accessories. It is…read morelocated along the pedestrian walk in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It is a gem. This is where men and women seeking the best of the best in clothes can find them. I was impressed on my first visit, but knowing my limitations I returned with a friend. She is an amateur seamstress and well qualified to appraise the quality of the workmanship at Die Krawatte. She was flabbergasted with the quality. Pulling a few items at random, she explained a number of details that manufactured clothing, even very expensive stuff, rarely or never includes (generally because of the complexity of the details or because of the number of steps involved in the manufacturing process for such details). Examples are silk connecting fabric where seams diverge at the bottom of a shirt tail, stitching details around button holes, and collar construction. I learned a lot. I bought a few shirts, with different collar styles, fabrics, and cuff types. Each was made to my measurements and detail selections. They are also monogrammed at the tails, which is kind of fun. All of their suits are hand stitched and hand cut. You chose the fabrics and colors and details. There are a myriad of details that add up to a wonderful experience. I spent some very enjoyable time learning about suit construction, fitting and measuring, and selecting fabrics in their upstairs dressing and sample area. I selected a grey suit with a few understated custom touches and a pair of dark brown handmade shoes along with other appropriate accessories. It took about two weeks to get the shoes. The suit and shirts arrived after a month. Another fitting session ensued, for each item, and small alterations perfected the look. All of these items are among my favorite and most comfortable. If you feel uncomfortable or stuffy in your dress clothes, or if you just want quality without compromise, you should visit Die Krawatte. There is no comparison to a brand name suit (even a nice one) and a suit made just for your body. They speak English and German, have wonderful taste, and experts, and make the process fun. Their excitement is infectious and the results are outstanding. I love wearing these clothes. They have my measurements on file, to my joy. All my future fine clothing needs are just an e-mail and a small shipping charge away!

You can also find khakis & trousers but where this place really stands out is w/ their Dirndls Taking fabrics that range from gingham cotton to shiny silks w/ inlaid beading, you will find off-the-rack dirndls as well as an entire wall of fabric bolts, in case you're looking to get 1 custom made Knowing we were just there for the afternoon & did not have the luxury of getting something custom, we made a beeline for the racks. Knee-length & full-length styles are available. I tried on both & decided on a shorter version in a fancy red & green patterned silk - after all, gotta support my German-by-marriage heritage! Mother In Law was thrilled I chose to get a dirndl & even more thrilled we purchased from her favorite store...and making my Mother In Law happy makes me happy Parting thought: Be prepared for some hefty sticker shock - you *will* be forking over a very pretty penny... these are not fancy-dress costumes! They are serious high-end fashions for the traditional Bavarian woman. Sure you can find cheaper but you get what you pay for & if you're looking for haute couture, the only place to shop is here

I drooled over a pair of goat leather lederhosen-style pants prices at €269.00. I loved spending time shopping there. I just wish we had more time but we had to get to the train station and head back to Munich.

Their selection is not huge but they do have lots of different prices ranges from cheap to expensive. They have two levels of stuff and whilst the shop looks tiny from the outside, there is a fair bit of stuff inside. The selection of lederhosen and dirndl was good and the prices were also reasonable. It's a little bit away from the center of town and whilst there are other shops in the town center, the location meant better prices. We ended up buying some things and ended up getting a further reduction due to long weekend sale. Not a bad place to get traditional wear in Garmisch.
