I have visited Birkenhead Town Hall on several occasions regarding my burgeoning ancestral research. While I have received some very useful certificates, the service was sadly not quite so helpful. The staff are a little aloof, even disdainful, I find most of them unapproachable and have had some trouble in the past: on a couple of occasions I was informed that certificates I had ordered were ready for collection, I travelled to the town hall to claim them only to be told that they had been lost. On both occasions the staff were unconcerned and did not apologise for my inconvenience or their mishap.
On another visit I had asked to view the World War II memorial plaque, on which a relative commemorated. Some staff, unaware of it's existence rather rudely dismissed my enquiry, I asked another member of staff who made some sarcastic remark and told me with a wry smile that I could find the plaque in the museum upstairs, if the museum was open, which it wasn't.
Disappointing, and actually quite unnecessary behaviour. read more
