Liverpool's landmarks are not only some of its brightest jewels, but also the heftiest boots to the knackers of most other metropolises in our fair nation. The fact the city bulges out from the river simply means we have a more accessible viewpoint to stand back and gaze at the recognisable skyline. It's difficult to say that about the urban sprawls of Manchester or Birmingham. So there.
The Pier Head, with the 'Three Graces' of the Liver, Cunard and Port of Liverpool Buildings, is one of the most iconic spots. It's hard to imagine it not existing but barely over a century ago those buildings weren't there. This meant the city had no choice but to march down to the waterfront and stop dead. What a dull view that must have been.
Recently, a canal has appeared, seemingly out of freaking nowhere, and the new concrete expanse in front gives the area a refreshingly spacious feel. It's just a shame the place is infested with skater boys. I've tried telling them to go away but then I look mad. And they call this a free country. read more
