Chester Cathedral is a fairly nice Cathedral, right in the city centre on St Werburgh Street, surrounded by beautiful gardens and trees, it is impressive both inside and out and is one of the main attractions within the city of Chester. While I would have liked to see some surrounding cafes with views of the cathedral, rather than a bar (Botanist) with no outdoor seating and a barber (Supercuts), and perhaps some more historical information around the Cathedral, it is a rather nice place to visit and take a gander at while in the city of Chester. With a tower height of 39 meters, it isn't the largest Cathedral and I do feel part of the grounds could have been better maintained for cleanliness, for example, the overall garden could have been maintained better and the sign did appear rusty and hard to read outside, which surely is in need of a good clean or perhaps replacement. Since 1541 it has been the seat of the Bishop of Chester and it still does add character to a great city in the North-West of England. 3* read more

The Chester Cathedral was our first stop in Chester. It was open to the public and we didn't have to pay an entrance fee, but we still made a donation. With buildings like this, I like to try and get to the highest point (usually a bell tower) and get nice views, but I'm pretty sure you can only access the tower via the tours and there were no tours the day we were in town. Darn! The inside rooms and the grounds were very nice. read more

Built and modified in the flicker of time between 1093 and the sixteenth century, Chester Cathedral is a vast, solid monster of a building that does a good job of being a cathedral. Filled with the kind of things you think you know but don't- naves, cloisters, transepts- the building is a relaxing place of hushed decorum that you can shuffle round on a quiet afternoon, or in my case drive everybody up the wall with your squeaky shoes. The garden in the centre of the cathedral is even more soothing. Here you can sit listening to the steady flow of the fountain and try not to imagine being back at work. read more

Chester Cathedral is set right in the centre of Chester and is a must see attraction for anyone visiting. its so beautiful inside and out and is free to enter but they do ask for a donation. it is up there with the top cathedrals in the UK. It really is stunning! They also do walks to the top of the cathedral at certain times of the day. it also has a nice little cafe, shop and beautiful gardens. read more

We popped by here because we had a couple of hours to spare -- with fairly limited expectations, to be honest, as we weren't sure how long out two (aged 3 and 5) would be able to maintain interest. How wrong we were. The place has got lots of nooks and crannies to explore but best of all there was a fantastic tape tour (I think it was free, although we had paid to get in) -- automatically activated when we wandered into various zones around the building. Our 5-year-old loved it and our 3-year-old was kept entertained by the various stories as we explored. All in all, well worth a visit. read more

This is a popular tourist attraction in the heart of Chester city centre. It really is a beautiful grade 1 listed building and is approximately 1000 years old. The cathedral is built of New Red Sandstone and because of this if gives the interior a warm and mellow pinkish appearance. read more

We went round here in under an hour, so the £5 per person entry felt a little expensive. You can visit for free if you attend one of the daily services. It was well lit (see photo showing low power bulbs, which looked very odd in this setting) and well heated; so no damp smell often associated with similar large buildings. The size, scale and details within this building are impressive, but you can't help feeling sorry for the people who had to build it. Small gift shop is available. read more

All cities have a catherdral, in fact that's what gives a city its 'city' status and the catherdral in Chester is just lovely. On a lovely spring or Summer's day there's nothing more lovely than to wander around the grounds and take in the sights. If you would like to visit the catherdral, there is a charge unless you wish to attend one of their services, but it's not too expensive. For those enthusiasts there's hand held uide devices that you can hire to learn all about the catherdral as you wander. And if you're peckish you can also buy a lovely cream tea and scones !! read more

beautiful inside, friendly staff, clergy lovely.. always happy to chat and talk to the children to explain parts of the Cathedral. Amazing ceilings and some lovely carved wood inside too. A little pricey. Its £6.00 with a donation in with entrance fee, and £5.45 without the donation. No one is going to say no to the donation are they when asked? of course not. I know they need the funds but its a crafty way of getting the donation. £2.50 per child. Children are free if there are 3 or more children in your party. Seems a bit unfair on people with 1 or 2 children. We walked around pretty quickly, I kept reminding myself that the money was going to the upkeep of the Cathedral to save myself feeling £12 was a lot for the brief visit. Men's toilets smelled bad I was told. might be able to blame men for that instead of the cathedral haha ?! I wouldn't go again but it was pleasant enough for a one off look. I am always impressed by old cathedrals even though I am not religious myself. read more

If you are visiting Chester you have to at least walk past the Cathedral. There is also a place to eat in here too. Fairly reasonable and nice food. You often see lots of people in the grounds, sitting on the grass having their lunch. read more

Chester Cathedral is a wonderful building steeped in history. It's found in a very pretty part of town and can be easily accessed from the walls, so it ties in nicely as a stop for those walking around the entire wall perimeter. Entry is free but donations are welcomed. Once inside there is a few rooms of history before leading to the impressive main chamber. The Cathedral is still actively used for Christian Services and also by the community for many events including Duke of Edinburgh award presentations and recently, as a venue for the antiques road-show. If you are coming to Chester for reasons other than shopping, the Cathedral is a must visit building. read more

Chester Cathedral is not the best Cathedral I've been in, but having said that, it is still worth a visit. Inside Chester Cathedral I found it more spacous than most Cathedrals, the pews were well spaced out and there wasn't any tombs to bump in to, so no chance of wakening the dead. It's downside was it lacked Spiritual Feeling, you know that cold air you sence when you enter a Holy Place. Perhaps it was because the Bishop had forgot to turn off the central heating. read more

I highly recommend the "Cathedral at Height" tour, which takes you to some of the upper galleries to look down onto the cathedral floor, then up into the ringing room, the bell tower, and finally to the roof of the tower, which offers splendid views. read more
