Our golf group came to Charlottesville for this course on the Boars Head property. This is home to the University of Virginia golf teams. Even VT Hokies like this course. The carts have GPS to help with distance etc. It is a beautifully laid out course at the foot of the mountains. We were cart path only because of the recent rain. The course is hilly and has some really challenging holes. Our group really enjoyed the course. It was hot, so the cooler with waters was helpful. They have a lovely restaurant/bar and a nice pro shop. read more

Absolutely loved my round at Birdwood! The course was in fantastic condition, the staff were friendly, and the members we played with were great (though that's not something Birdwood really controls). The greens rolled pure, there weren't many weird hole layouts or blind shots, and I also liked that there were four sets of men's tees to choose from (white, blue, black, and college). As a local player, I am disappointed that Birdwood dropped its participation as a VSGA VIP Program Course in the summer and its discount for UVA Lifetime Alumni Association members. Maybe guests at the Boars Head can afford its new fees, but it's way too expensive for locals. I request that the administration look into offering these 2 discount programs to support community players. read more

Visually beautiful, challenging course in great condition. The cart seats were very plush with a sophisticated GPS system that even shows locations of other carts so you don't hit into other players. The on course bathroom facilities were airy and clean with a nice automated water system. If I were a local, I'd be a regular. read more

First off, fantastic course. Greens are smooth and almost impossible to hold if you're above the hole, so steer towards being short than long (hit some shots on the chipping green and you'll see what I mean). Course itself has a wonderful layout and seemed pretty walkable. Hilly but walkable. Good collection of holes but some weaker par 3s, but that's forgivable because the 4s and 5s are fantastic. Lost of little areas to practice: two putting greens, a chipping green, and a good sized driving range where you can hit off grass. The UVA golfers also seem to have a 100 yards and in practice green hidden away. There is a new practice center coming in the Fall of 2018. Looks like it's going to be awesome. Clubhouse is small but the service is good. New grill but I didn't have time to try it. Overall I had a great experience playing the UVA golf course near Charlottesville. You all should come out! read more

Ok, so I am a 11 handicapper. So, a decent golfer. My wife and I went to the resort for our 25th. Played during the week first thing in the morning. I would play and my wife wanted to drive the cart and watch. Got paired up with 2 of the local member snobs. The second member did not even look or talk to us, unbelievably rude. 2nd hole I was being encouraged to play ahead. Ok fine. That's great, except they let folks start from the back 9 as well first thing in the morning. Got jammed up as a single on #10 and then another member said " hey you can pass the next 3 groups in front of us and 15 should be open". No thanks, turned around and went home. The course is very nice and challenging. The members attitude is the problem. read more

I've played here a couple of times with my brother, who lives in Charlottesville. The clubhouse staff are quite nice, and helped me out with some rental clubs which were not too expensive and were in excellent condition. Overall, I think this course is pretty great. There is varied terrain, a couple of really challenging holes, and the conditions were quite good despite it being a little late in the fall. I was a little disappointed that they were pretty much mowing every hole we were on, which got a little bit annoying. I know that they have to maintain the upkeep, but it's like they were following us from hole to hole. I would have enjoyed it more if it had been a little less disruptive. That said, I'll probably try to go back when I visit my brother again. read more

What a fantastic and beautiful golf course. There all you see are the beautiful views of the hills and terrain of Charlottesville. This is where all the UVA kids practice and the course is quite challenging. - The front nine plays easier than the back nine. - The back nine is much longer in yardage. - Use a cart if you can. The hills will wear you out and there is a bit of a gap between some holes. - If you're used to playing flat golf courses pay particular attention to the terrain as reading greens becomes a bit difficult. - The golf course is in immaculate shape. When the greens get cut they roll extremely fast. - Don't miss the fairway. The rough gets rather gnarly. - Play for position on the green. The last thing you want to do is short side your chip shots. - This course suits well for people who can shoot in the 80s or lower. Don't go bringing someone out here that hardly plays. It's a fun course if you're familiar with the game but can easily throw up a large number which makes any golf course no fun. Enjoy and I hope you break 80. Three of us did a Florida Best Ball format since it was for a bachelor party and we shot 63. :) read more

Played course 1 time in June 2013 This is an excellent golf course. Very hilly and interesting. So many great views from the tee boxes - particularly the back ones (as is usually the case). Don't be afraid of the blue tees - the longer par 4s pretty much all play WAY downhill. I'm not a particularly long hitter and I hit driver-wedge to the 445-yard 16th. Another member of our group who usually plays the white tees begrudgingly played the tips with us and still had a great scoring round. It's not long by modern standards, but it long enough to provide some challenge. I was definitely put off that they didn't allow walking on weekend mornings. But all was forgiven when we were able to play in under 4 hours teeing off at 8:15am on a summer Saturday (giving us unexpected brief nap time before the wedding we were attending that afternoon :). Yes, the course was full. And admittedly, there are several long, uphill walks from green to tee. I would have enjoyed the extra exercise, but we weren't waiting at all so the carts did help to keep us moving. As a devout walking golfer, it pains me to admit this. :0) The course was in wonderful condition, as it should be at the start of a summer following a cool, wet spring. Don't be fooled by the flat practice putting greens - there is a lot of slope on the regulation greens. It will behoove you to try to determine which way the greens slope before hitting your approach and keep your ball below the hole. Check out the chipping green next to the driving range to get an idea of how most of the greens on the course play. The driving range was very spacious and had lots of grass, but the areas we were hitting from had very little grass left. Mainly this is because most golfers don't know how to consolidate their divot-taking during practice. I did see that there was nice turf at the far end of the range, which is presumably reserved for the UVA team (and maybe yearly golf members) to use. Fair enough. Modest but nice clubhouse. I enjoyed the pulled pork BBQ sandwich and draft Bass ale that our overmatched opponents had to pay for after the round. INCREDIBLY friendly staff. The course was full when I called earlier in the week, but they were able to find a morning tee time for us when I visited the afternoon before our round to hit some balls. One member of our group rented left-handed clubs which he found satisfactory if not impressive. All in all, an excellent experience. I'd give it 4 1/2 stars if that option were available. Amazingly convenient to Charlottesville/UVA campus. read more

I hate to rate a course on customer service but this place lacks class. They pretend to be high society but treat people poorly. I was forced to buy a collared shirt then noticed several people with no sleeves and no collars out playing. Inconsistent procedures. The golf clubs I rented were all caked with dirt (even the driver) so I was forced to clean them before every first shot. The grounds crew definitely does a fantastic job. I spoke with Wendy briefly and she takes great pride in her job. The course layout is difficult and beautiful at the same time. I would give this place another try hoping the service would be a little better. read more

One of the best driving ranges in central Virginia, with good additional practice areas, and a decent course. Some of the holes are quite challenging. For what this place is, in the region of the country where it is, the prices are moderate-to-high and the management is very pretentious. This is a good (not great) college course, and it is not as good a course as Farmington Country Club, across the road. read more

I am not a good golfer but I do enjoy golfing for the serene atmosphere. This was the most snooty fast paced golf course I have golfed at in my life. The scenery is beautiful, I recomend golfing during the week so you are not rushed during your game. I literally was stared at because I was going too slow. Why did I pay 50+$ to rush?
