Great trail. Easy to get to, and fairly a good, challenging climb to the top.

I love how Griffith Park is a natural oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. There are so many trails within the park that it becomes a choose your own adventure on how easy or difficult you want to make the journey. I came this time with a friend, and we decided to walk off some calories after noshing at a local delicatessen. We parked in a small lot at the end of a cul de sac that doubled as the Brush Canyon Trailhead. It was along the southern end of Griffith Park which was a shorter but steeper distance to the sign at Mt. Lee Summit. The initial mile was an ascent that took us to the junction with Mulholland Trail. From there, it was a series of fairly flat switchbacks that provided a nice overlook of the mansions below. The path was wide enough to allow lots of foot and horse traffic. A drawback was the landmines (i.e. dung) you had to dodge from the horses. When we reached Mt. Lee Drive, it was a junction in which you could continue around the bend towards Tyrolian Tank. That was a plateau which we visited on our way back with a beautiful view of the sign as a backdrop. Our decision was to continue another mile up a service drive that would lead us to the back of the sign. I think many people underestimate the additional winding slopes before reaching the endpoint. There must have been an increase of 500 feet in elevation during this final climb. The peak provided a nice view of Lake Hollywood in the distance to the south and the smoggy blanket that hovered over the valley to the north. The back of the sign was rather boring as you could see the scaffolding that held up the letters. We took a break and then descended to Tyrolian Tank for more photos. By the time we arrived back at the parking lot, it was a three-hour round trip that covered over seven miles. The weather could not have been better as there were few clouds, and the temperature was in the low 70s.

How cool is it to live somewhere where you can just visit the old zoo while taking a stroll through…read morethe park? Pretty cool if you ask me. After living in LA for just under two years my wife and I figured it was about time we actually checked this place out. We came here with all three of our dogs on a Sunday morning and it was a really cool experience. When you arrive to Griffith Park all you really have to do is follow the signs and it'll lead you right to a small parking lot, usually also loaded with man-made signs for kids birthday parties and such. Once you park, you have to follow a trail and walk up a slight hill for like two minutes before you are suddenly staring at some old enclosures and such. These enclosures are fully open, meaning you can walk right up to them, inside of them, and check them out yourself. If you follow the path a little more you are able to go up a hill and explore behind the bigger exhibits (which I was unable to do this day thanks to some recent lung issues). I have no idea how big the actual old zoo area is, but the area we saw was really freaking cool and definitely has me itching to come back when I'm 100% in order to see everything. Overall, The Old Zoo is cool chance to go back in time for free and experience old some Los Angeles. The park is free, parking is free, and guess what? Checking out the old zoo is free too. You really can't go wrong with some slight exploration and cool photo opportunities. I look forward to coming back soon and exploring some more.

Not anything huge to see, but something unique if you're wanting to do a hiking trail anyway.read more

You're at the top when you see the stair pathway and then you turn back and there is Bee Rock. However, the section for bee rock is closed. You can see it to a certain point. So I threatened it and I didn't procrastinate. We parked at Mineral Waters Picnic area, you go the start of the hike to Amir's Garden (it is a sign near the parking lot). There are various hikes as you'll see on the map and signs. We kept going passed Amir Garden's and the Vista Del Valle Dr. You will see a sign or a few on the way. At some point (there's a sign) the trails separate - Left to Bee Rock and Right to Hollywood Vista. Once you take a Left, the incline stops. It's less than a mile, a walk in the park, literally, on concrete. Then, you'll see the sign and you'll climb a bit to get on top (there are fences for protection) and graffiti and there you are! On the top of Bee Rock! At least I was! Beautiful hike, not that complicated or long, about 2 miles up and 2 miles back. It's not crowded and you'll see cool staircases and vistas on the way. So I did it! I finally conquered Bee Rock!
