Our closest park and our go‑to spot for friend meet‑ups. I love that there's plenty of parking along the side, and you can walk right up to the park without any hassle -- which is rare for North Park. The city views of downtown are such a nice bonus. There are a few trees that give you some shade to set up under, and there's a small playground for the kids. The one downside is the very limited bathrooms. We usually set up at the top area of the park, and the walk to the nearest bathroom is pretty far. I'd love to see more public restrooms and water stations here, but unfortunately that's an issue at a lot of our city parks. The location is great though -- close to tons of bars and great food spots in North Park if you want to explore after, or grab something to bring to the park beforehand. read more

I first came here on a picnic date a few months ago and can absolutely vouch for it being a prime picnic spot. Now I started swinging by when I have visiting friends and we are heading into North park. It's a great view of the city! Kick off your local adventure grabbing coffee or takeout from one of the local spots in North park- just a few blocks away. You may end up parking near them too depending on how full the neighborhood around the park is. I always plan for a little walk. There is lots of space to spread out and there is even some great people watching if you stay awhile. read more

Wow, has this little park zoomed in popularity over the past several months! First off, don't expect to find a lot of birds in Bird Park. Sure, there's a good chance you'll see some squawking parrots flying overhead, but there's otherwise not a whole lot to attract birds here, at least not until they acquire smart phones and want to take selfies with their species names written on the cement pathway. I'm picturing an avian version of that scene in The Jerk where Steve Martin finds his name in the phone book and ecstatically screams out "I'm somebody! I'm somebody!" OK, OK, I digress. Back to Bird Park. Since COVID blessed us with it's microscopic Koosh ball-like presence, urban parks have had a well-deserved renaissance in popularity. This grassy area in the northeast corner of Balboa Park has a small grove of eucalyptus trees, some currently off-limits playground equipment, and lots of lovely grass for a picnic, a workout, a layout, or whatever else strikes your fancy. Sunsets, not to the horizon, but lovely nonetheless, are a nice evening bonus. I have found it to be a great place to meet friends for a nice distanced get together or for a pleasant diversion on my walks around the neighborhood. And with its growing popularity, you might even get a little people-watching and goat-watching in too. (Seriously, there's a family that walks their goat here some nights.) So, in short, don't come for the birds, but stay for the goat. Wow, I never thought I'd write that. read more

Easy, Breezy, Beautiful. Bird park. Love this little piece of the outdoors in the urban chunk of San Diego known as North Park. This is the perfect place for an impromptu volleyball game, soccer match or taking a quick siesta in the sun with your lady or dude. On a clear day this spot has a great view of the Coronado Bridge, Downtown San Diego and even the bell tower in the middle of Balboa Park. There's a small swing set and jungle gym for the kids and kids at heart; plus Bird Park recently added a few port-o-potties. This is awesome for many reasons...reasons I don't fee like I need to explain here. Remember... this is a booze free park, but I have on occasion seen people trying to be sneaky by brown baggin' it or sipping from a red plastic cup. But be forewarned, police do cruise through this park on four wheelers pretty regularly. So be on the look out if you choose to live dangerously! Quick tip: Make sure to bring a blanket for that midafternoon picnic and the food coma that will soon follow. read more

Cute little park for local residents. And what I mean by local residents is because it doesn't have a bathroom facility you'll either have to walk/drive back home or take a 10 minute walk to Morley Field to use the restroom. Ha! And if you do decide to pee in the bush, keep in mind that this park has a lot of kids, so you can get indecent exposure ticket if you are caught, so I suggest you hold it in or go to Morley Field. It sucks with no bathroom...but it keeps the homeless away. I didn't see any homeless on a popping Sunday lazy afternoon. Plenty of sun, plenty of grass, plenty of room with a nice view of downtown on clear days. Good for tanning. You can also see the planes landing, but not close enough to get annoyed by the sound. There are about 4-5 trees, so don't expect shade so bring your own shade. It's not a big park but it's pretty good for the neighborhood. I wouldn't waste my time driving here if you're looking for a park to drive to, not that I don't like it, but if driving, drive to like Balboa Park or Lake Poway. read more

Since I spent about $30 in gas to get to this park I was expecting more. It's cute, plenty of street parking, a few concrete benches, enough trees. My problem was with the lack of facilities. Thank God I wasn't hungover and had to blast ass. That would of sucked. Other than that the company was great and thanks to Lisa C for scouting out the alternate bathroom area. I may have caused a car or two to crash by the blinding whiteness of my big hiney but it's their fault for looking. The Tony, Todd, Antonio sing a long was a kick as usual. The cookie mountain was fantastic as was all of the food I tried. OOOOO and I haven't had KFC in ions. mmmmmmmashed potatoes. Surprisingly wonderful little spot for locals. I wouldn't go out of your way to come here though. I came on a Friday afternoon - wasn't crowded. There is a swing set area for kids and a picnic table. What I loved most was a little sunny grove area with big rocks that I could sit against and work on my laptop. Can use the trees as well if you prefer shade. It wasn't out of sight but private and quiet enough and far away from the swing set area. Plenty of street parking. read more

This is a somewhat strange review: a neighborhood park from the point of view of a dancer. Well, I went there to dance on Sunday evening - and I did some dancing. The infrastructure: - easy street parking along the 28th St.; - practically no shade; - water fountain; - seating is extremely limited (concrete benches); - nearest bathroom is at Morley Field (across the Pershing Drive, off the Jacaranda Pl., about 1000 feet as the crow flies, double that if you cannot fly). There is a choice of three dancing surfaces: - grass lawn with some brown patches and uneven surface; - small concrete surface next to the playground, bad for pivots; - playground itself (soft rubberized surface, good for jumps, bad for pivots). In any case, leave your good dance shoes at home. It would be wise to bring your own lawn chair and a local friend so you can use his bathroom (kidding). read more

Neat little gem of a neighborhood park. Friendly people who walk and live in the area that will spark some conversations passing by. Interesting types birds are engraved in the cement pavement, plenty of space for vegging out on the grass, small playground for the kiddos, and a stones throw from the Grape Street Park. Also a neat view of downtown from this area. They also throw movies at this park at night during the summer season (learned that from a nice elderly couple walking their doggo in the park). read more

This is my favorite park near my house in San Diego. Its just a simple green lawn with a few trees that provide the perfect amount of shade. There is a swing set for the kidos. Public restrooms are just a short 2 minute walk down the hill near Morley Field. Bird Park has a great view of downtown. It can get bit nuts on the 4th of July; its the place to be because you can see all the shows throughout the city. For those looking to booze it up this is not your spot. Its a dry park and the police do give citations for those caught violating so be warned. read more

As far as parks go this one is just mediocre but since it exists at all I feel it deserves at least 4 stars. However the question of the day was "Where are the barfrooms" so I deduct one star. One swing set, 2 or 3 tables and walkways with bird names - or so I hear - I hadn't noticed. My eyes were up at breast height behind my sunglasses. What you can get away with ! ("legally" I don't know") Dogs - yes. Watch out for the rat sized ones, they steel your Nerfball. Alcohol - Nobody said we couldn't. To me that's a "Yes". Hibachi - Nobody said we couldn't. Smoking - I guess so Hula Hoops - If they fit. Punk Rockers - as long as they don't mind a huge group of drunk Yelpers singing "25 or 6 to 4" or "Saturday in the Park" Wet Paper Towel fights - Yes, yes, and a double yes. Hawt Girl on Girl wresting match - Yes, yes, oh yes. Every guy watching G on G wrestling match - Just try and stop us. Things not allowed - idiots. That being said we were all there for a posted Yelp event -Maces going away for awhile party. If you missed it, you're bummed! If you were there you're still smiling! Guitar jam sing along, various alcoholic beverages, lots of food, lots of laughter, increased sense of well-being, sunshine, Nerf football toss, Hula Hooping-if it fits you, nice view. I'm running out of words yet there's so much more to say. To summarize - If ever your feeling down, attend a Yelp event. It's like a shot a B12 with 5 shots of whiskey chaser. Drink responsibly! Sorry to the Yelpers who didn't get the memo... Anywho, as I was driving down Upas looking for 28th St, the road suddenly splits into 3. I drive down the middle, and Andy and I sight the Yelpers at the park to our left. Me- "Oh crap! I'm going to have to bust a U" Andy- "No! There's a left turn lane up ahead...OMG! I think you're driving on the wrong side of the road!!!" Me- "OMG! I think you're right!!! AAAAAHHHHH!!!!" Luckily, no one was injured, and we were able to arrive at Mace's Going Away Potluck in one piece. Now where was Mace??? Cool guy showed up with his entourage fashionably late...there was lots of food, and I took lots of random pictures...which will be available someday. We really did make a circle and introduce ourselves...I think I was the only one who sang "Kumbaya" though. :P read more

Bird Park is a lovely, albeit slightly odd park. It's three blocks from my house, and I love it because it's literally the easternmost extension of Balboa Park. The sidewalk is emblazoned with the names of local San Diego bird species, and if you're sitting just right, you can see all of downtown, the Coronado bridge, and a snippet of ocean in one view. Just to warn you, it's NOT a good spot, however, to watch the fireworks on the 4th of July. The marine layer rolls in and spoils the show, or at least it did last year. It was like watching a tv behind a sheet, or hearing music under a pillowcase, which puts a bit of a damper on the whole darn thing. Also, this weekend, I was delighted to visit Bird Park for a Yelper BBQ. I got to hear ridiculous statements and have a laughably good time while chatting with Kim over swings, eating tiramisu with Dale, get nearly killed when Jae decided to break a tequila bottle behind me (nothing like shards of glass in yoru pants!), and watch Cynthia bond with a fuzzy caterpillar (no innuendo, a real proto-butterfly, folks). I also got to hear some of the most ridiculous quotes this weekend while enjoying the scenic, windswept expanse of grass. Ever mild-mannered preschool teacher Andy C. calmly asked a fellow Yelper, "Do I have to kick your ass?" a query I'd never have expected. Speaking of odd queries, Melissa S felt the need to offer me a hula hoop and then ask if it would fit me. FIT ME? I know I'm large and in charge, but the day that a hula hoop is snug is the day I just give up and start getting moved from point A to point B via crane. All in all, Bird Park kicks ass, although the birds are a bit creepy, and a crazy Filipina may ask if you can fit in a hula hoop. Damn. read more

OK I clicked down there to indicate that this place is not good for kids. But Lisa Cee! ( you may be saying) How can it not be good for kids! There are swings and slides and stuff oh boy! Well I dunno about your kids, but mine had to pee about every six seconds when he was a sprocket. Fortunately, he's a boy so I could point him behind a convenient bush/water fountain/large human and he would have been fine. As a female, though? Not so much. The grown up girls in the group - those of us who are well versed in the traditions of bush parties and other outdoor drinking sports - do the same thing. It's no big deal, except when the limo bus and/or cyclists roll past and you are worried about them peeking at your chachi. Some females, of course, are more delicate in their sensibilities and had to trek halfway to the Aero to use the loo. The next time we throw a potluck here, I'm going to bring meat on a stick and a costco sized box of Depends. Problem solved! read more

Not a bad place to chill out but theres no bathroom so act like a boy scout and be prepared. Its near all those nice big homes overlooking the park. I wished I was the one that hit the 46 million dollar lotto last week. I'd buy the land and make one of the homeowners sell me their house. I love this park! I live in north North Park and would much rather walk the 15 mins it takes to get to this park (or a 5 min bike ride) than have to chill at North Park park (where the North Park Rec Center is on Howard and Kansas). I just want to make a note to all those peeps who don't know where the bathrooms are...They are located just down the hill when you walk across Pershing. Not a hop, skip and a jump away. Maybe more along the lines of a long hop. They are over by the Bocce Ball courts. Jack in the Box might be a bit closer, though I never actually walked over the JBX to use their facilities. I've always just used the public bathrooms. read more

Awww good ol' Birk Park lovely home of the USG (Taking all challenges saturday mornings). I've been going to this park since I was a little kid, my fondest memory was back in the 90s when it rained like crazy which caused all of the old trees to uproot and fall down. This provided hours upon hours of fun trying to climb all the way across the tree starting from the stump. This park would also make the perfect setting for a cheaters episode. The van could hide on the street and totally film the cheaters from inside the van without them knowing! read more

Bird Park is a beautiful neighborhood park. Nestled in a very nice area of North Park, it has a great view of downtown, especially for Fourth of July fireworks. It's very well maintained and has a small playground for the kids. As big as it is, you hardly find the place packed. And surprisingly, there are few, if any, homeless people that hang around. However, this park is known for its scenery rather than its amenities and for me, it just doesn't offer enough or is that breathtaking to be a huge fan. But if you're looking for nice areas to jog through, relax, or have an intimate conversation, Bird Park is a nice choice. read more

This was nice for when my daughter was younger, but now that she's 3 I don't take her here anymore. The only equipment they have are 2 baby swings, a twisty slide, and a big frog and seal to climb on. However, there is a lot of nice grassy area that is perfect for kicking a soccer ball around or having a little picnic. read more

Walk the shady path and read the names of all the local birds, take a swing--first with a view of Balboa Park, the California Tower, Point Loma and the Ocean, then turn around and look down Thorn Street toward the Mountains! this place was all right. the area that we were at was nice. swings, open grass, nice trees for some shade, and just a couple of tables. they basically get there minus stars in the driving area since it's kinda a hard place to find and the roads are pretty scary, or it could have just been marisol's driving, hahaha, just kidding!!!! the second minus star is taken away when I found out there was no bathrooms there, but I must say, I am totally excited when I found out that there was a pee group!!! Free Bird Park Concerts during the summer, great place to watch 5 different locations of July 4 fireworks, plus, best place in North Park to watch the sunset... I bike here very regularly and take in the sunset over downtown / coronado bridge. the free concerts in the summer are great, just a wonderful cool park. read more

Its at the top of Pershing Dr going into Upas St. Bird Park is a cool place to hang in the summers for Free Concerts in the Park hosted by the North Park Main Street Committee. Its also a nice place to see Fireworks for the 4th. Good views of downtown, balboa park trees, coronado bridge and on a clear day, the Coronado Islands. A must if you are a local, and I am a North Parky. read more

A tiny corner on the left side of park has its own tiny triangle with jungle gym so passed it up a couple times thinking it was attached to the huge park on the right as part of the big Balboa park. But we all met for a bbq and had a great time there. read more

I actually love this park. Yeah sure it's small and has no facilities (Jack in the box a couple blocks up or Morley Field a block down does btw), but it's meant to be a place for small short quick gatherings. It's also a park dedicated to all the wild birds of San Diego. I love walking on the pathway that starts littered with all the names of the species past the huge grassy lawn that overlooks Balboa Park then proceeds through the kids area to the secluded woodsy part of the park. I've always thought the homeless would be hanging out down there, but in 3 years of living there not once was that the case after 8pm! Not many folks go there which make it sort of nice for the older generation who just want a quiet place to hang and chat or a place where you can play with your dog uninterrupted. And on top of all this - Bird Park has got to be one of the best places to view fireworks - you get three shows happening downtown and at Seaworld in one overlooking the park (that stays dark at night so its a true view of fireworks). Certainly a nice place to go. read more
