As someone who dedicates their life to work and exploring new food spots, working out has never…read morebeen my forte. I am a notorious quiter. If I struggle at something athletic, I am usually the first person to determine my time would be better spent completing work tasks not done during the work day. Turning 30, I decided I needed a change and signed up for the Southern Maryland CrossFit "Fall Into Fitness" Special. The "Fall Into Fitness" Special included unlimited classes for six weeks totalling $125.00 per person. My husband agreed to do it with me as support for a new step we both knew was going to be a struggle for me. Walking into Southern Maryland CrossFit, I did not know what to think but I was immediately greeted by Coach Amy who wove humor into her customer service paperwork requirements to help ease the obvious anxiety I was feeling upon walking in. Once you leave the small office, the entire remainder of the space is dedicated to work out space and equipment. Classes are on a rolling basis so when one is ending, the next class is preparing to warm up while other members are on the perimeter doing independent lifting tasks (ie. bench press, squats, overhead press). Warm ups are similar each day allowing for members to have some similarity and focus on the other components of the work out for the day. Each day of the week is different at Southern Maryland CrossFit and each coach works to support every members at their individual level/area of need. As a noob, each coach works with me on my form and help me scale the work out to a reasonable level (even when I am feeling spunky and try to go too heavy too soon). The coaches suggest members use a notebook of some sort to track their individual working weights and PRs; but if maintaining a notebook isn't your style (or you frequently forget where you put things), Southern Maryland CrossFit posts photos of their daily board onto their Facebook page. Overall, Southern Maryland CrossFit is extremely active on their website and social media platforms posting the daily work out, daily work out results, and even weekly messages from the owners! After a few months at Southern Maryland CrossFit, I feel stronger but something more important happened: I started to feel like part of a community. Each member is friendly, social, supportive, and down to help/scale with anyone whether you're new or a seasoned CrossFit participant. Even during the Corona Virus (COVID19) Pandemic, the Southern Maryland CrossFit Coaches and members have online virtual workout plans, virtual workout challenges, video meet ups, and frequent social media engagement. If you're a CrossFit kind of person or even if you're someone like me just looking to make a change to bring some healthy-ish balance to your life, consider Southern Maryland CrossFit. You won't regret it!

The place is not welcoming, the owner doesn't answer questions/phone, the hours are terrible. For me, crossfit gyms are supposed to be community-based. This is far from it. They won't allow for drop ins, supposedly because people are not respectful, but it really to lock you into the contract. On the only class was able to go, they give you all the rules. Drop the bar and that's 8 minutes of burpees for everyone but you. So much for community, pinning people against other. Drive 10 minutes more. Go somewhere else.

You are not competing with anyone, only yourself. So it takes the worry about having to keep up, out of the window! People from all levels of fitness were in there. From super beginners, intermediate to super advance. They demonstrate all levels of exercise so you can pick the one you want to do based on your comfort level. I stopped going only because I came down with the flu and I had to stop going, so I wasted a lot of days since I was out sick. I also have a gym that I use reguraly and I'm doing Nutrisystem and getting ready for a big vacation. So it it became too much for me to do it all in terms of $$. So, I plan to go back in the spring time to the 2 classes per week package. That fit my needs at the time. I would recommend the classes. It's a great way to add strength training, cardio and cool down stretching at the end. The instructors are great because they motivate you and really get you going. They coach and motivate everyone and they still give individual attention. Great exercises. They switch it up so its never the same.

I signed up for the one week trial and had a great time! I was only able to attend four classes,…read morebut enjoyed each one. The instructors were really helpful and gave me some modification options. It would probably help to have some background knowledge of common lifts, but the instructors show the movements and they play on video screens if you need it. Everyone attending was generally in their own zone, so there isn't a lot of chatting because you really focus on getting the exercises done in the set times. I will say that the classes go by super quickly because you're always moving. Cons: The programming is set for the whole month. So each day of the week has its set program and you do that each week for the whole month. For me, this would get old (I really need variety). On the plus side, it does mean you get to see active gains throughout the month. The membership plan is a little pricey. I get why it costs so much, since they do have to cover rent and you only really attend during the class sessions. It isn't a type of gym where you just drop in when you want to use certain equipment. The unlimited monthly membership is $299, but in reality you are getting 30 or 31 classes depending on the month. Since the classes are the same all day, it is unlikely you would do two classes in a day, right? So the pricing is about $10/class if you do the unlimited monthly pass and you go every day. Some of the equipment was pretty smelly. I was at one station that honestly made me gag a little... I think the bench or maybe the dumbells had never been thoroughly cleaned with a bleach solution.

Always a great workout, well maintained facilities and the community is great. Highly recommend.read more

Their Sunday Oly class was particularly knowledgeable and provided great snatch coaching for someone with 13 years of doing CrossFit. The only downside was admin. I had to sign 3 liability waivers, provide payment information multiple times, had a week delay getting access to wods/reservations, and the 0500 class cancelled one of the weeks I was there after the class showed available on zen planner and I reserved the day prior. Updated review on 11/9/18 -- My time at OT has come to an end. I have nothing negative to say about…read morethe OT workouts and trainers, because they are all amazing. My decision to end my membership is because I continue to have recurring issues with the HR monitor. If you read my previous review, I had an issue with the HR monitor during my very first class. I gave them another chance though and signed up for a membership immediately after said class. OT staff sold me on their newest and latest HR monitor after my 3rd class that you can wear on your wrist. It cost $115 bucks. The OTBeat monitor I purchased, did not work the very first class I used it in (my 4th OT class at this point) - yes, it was charged and yes, it was worn correctly) -- I continued with the class anyways and spoke with front desk staff after my class, who alluded that I didn't wear it right and that I needed to arrive a few minutes early during my next class so they can put it on correctly (rolls eyes -- I knew it wasn't a user issue). But I held them to that suggestion and arrived early for my next class the following week. Front desk staff put it on my arm for me and I began my class. Low and behold, front desk staff interjects my workout a couple of times after realizing the HR monitor was defective. This was after they moved it further up my wrist and applied some gel. At 30 mins, I gave my HR band to the front staff and continued my workout without a HR monitor at all. They decided to keep my band and "fix it" and would give me a call when it's fixed and ready for pickup. It's been over a week and I still haven't received a single call from OT. You'd think after so many bad experiences and being a semi-new member, the studio manager would reach out to rectify my bad experiences, but that hasn't happened. I will be going in this morning with the box (glad I kept that) to return my HR monitor and will be cancelling my membership. For a plan that's $69/month, I expect the OT experience that everyone else gets -- the bad a$$ workout and getting my workout results so I can compare with the previous week and see progress. And if you're wondering, what my plans are next -- I'm planning on joining xsport. They have an X-IT program that is an additional monthly cost (cheaper than OT) and it involves a very similar workout with the HR monitor. They also offer childcare for only $15/month, which allows me to sign up for their unlimited X-IT program. Edited to include that I contacted OT today to inquire about the status of my OTBeat monitor and was told that it was sent to corporate for repair. I asked for a refund given it was purchased less than 2 weeks ago and I was told that opened and used merchandise can't be return, which is silly given I was sold a defective HR monitor from the very beginning and addressed that my band was not working properly the first day it was used. I was told that my only other option is to sell it to someone. This is by far the worst experience I've had with a gym.
