Instead, I took the opportunity to use the spot as my third office of the day as there was very cool cellular coverage. After some emails, I did some walking along the trail to clear my head. The park is built on the former corridor of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. It turns out that it's the longest developed rail-trail in the country at 240 miles long with 26 trailheads and four fully restored railroad depots along the way. This spot in North Jefferson City / Holts Summit has the restored railroad depot with a public toilet. Lots of nature, lots of recreation and lots of opportunity to get away from too much of it all. Parking here is a dirt lot and there are a couple of picnic tables and some shade. A large structure with trail information and sights is here. One of Missouri's few state historic sites is just outside Jeff City to the east. Unfortunately…read morethere are no signs that point you to the park so its best to rely on your GPS. It is actually outside the small town of Osage City. There is not many recreational things to do there (like no fields, playground, places to play ball or eat, etc) as this is mostly focused on the historical aspect of it. Lewis and Clark once visited this site and met with the Osage Indians. There are Indian mounds present at the site but they are in the woods. Several historical markers talk and detail about the historical place. There is a 1/2-mile trail but it only leads you to a deck in the woods with no view. The Missouri River is visible in a few spots. Trail goes upward and downward both ways so be sure to bring good shoes. A few benches, though not in the best of shape are at the park and trail. The trail in the woods is also not paved so you feel like you have to look down everytime you take a step. Be sure to bring your bug spray as there are lots of them in the woods.

From Jefferson City, take Highway 54 east across the Missouri River, take the Route W exit and turn…read morenorth (left) on Route W (Cedar City Drive); then 4th Street west (left), then Cottonwood Drive south (left). At the end of the road, you'll find this peaceful spot that has a boat launch into the Missouri River and there is a fantastic view of the Jefferson City Bridge. There are several picnic tables too. Walk down the ramp to the riverside and stack some stones. Or just sit on one of the benches and enjoy the peace. There is a low hum from the vehicles crossing the bridge. Being near the open water - the Missouri is the longest river in the United States - is calming. Plenty of people around during daylight hours but I did not see any security. I feel lucky to have had Michael Lear as our guide, he was absolutely brilliant and was a stellar storyteller! The prison itself is very interesting, has alot of history behind it and honestly a little chilling. Hearing about its dark history really makes you stop, think about life and human existence. The parts about solitary confinement and how tiny the cells were with several people stuffed in were especially shocking. Michael even took us down to the basement solitary area and turned off the lights for a full minute so we could feel what it was like. That part gave me chills. We also got to see the prison cells from the 1800s all the way up to more recent ones, and even the gas chamber. It was intense but very eye-opening. I highly recommend this tour 1000%! And if you are lucky enough to have Michael as your guide, you're in for something fascinating. He also has a Missouri murder history podcast which is definitely worth checking out and supporting - It is called Show Me Murder. To conclude, thanks MSP for such an unforgettable experience!

I was lucky enough to do the full eight hour overnight investigation, which means about 40 to 50 people with near free rein over three massive prison buildings in the middle of the night. Most of the time was spent breaking into small groups and exploring the grounds looking for paranormal activity, and for me that meant just me and one friend wandering dark cell blocks and corridors that felt completely abandoned. This is absolutely not for the faint of heart because there are long stretches where you truly feel alone, surrounded by silence, shadows, and your own racing thoughts. There were plenty of spine chills, more than a few moments where I questioned my life choices, and by the end of the night I walked out a full believer. It was intense, unforgettable, and easily one of the most fascinating and highly recommended adventures I have ever done.

There was really nothing out here for the longest time. But they had money and if they built it, they would come. So I came. It was nice. I can't say that I've been on my golf courses, nor can I say I really play golf. But I can say I've been swinging a club on the golf course at a little ball, drinking as i advanced. I never kept score and I didn't care. It's a nice little thing, this golf course, out in the middle of nowhere.
