I stood there for a few minutes before anyone acknowledged me, and the first thing I was asked was whether I had placed an online order. The restaurant was not full at the time, so I found that experience disappointing. A simple "Welcome in, we'll be with you shortly" would have made a big difference. I ordered Kiki's Soul Food Plate with four chicken wings, string beans, sweet potato soufflé, and a muffin, along with a side of collard greens. The chicken wings were fried to a good consistency, but once I bit into them, the chicken was extremely dry--much drier than I expected. The string beans and collard greens were okay, but honestly, neither was anything special. The sweet potato soufflé was another surprise. When I took a bite, I tasted what seemed to be a clove, and I actually had to spit it out. That was definitely not what I expected when ordering sweet potato soufflé I am not a big fan of cloves. The muffin was probably the best part of the meal. It was hot, edible, and had more of a cake-like texture, which I actually enjoyed. I'm not someone who judges a restaurant based on one visit, especially since I've eaten at Kiki's several times before. But this particular visit just didn't live up to my previous experiences. My hubby said he liked his boudin burger too, even though he didn't know what boudin was. He got on the idea of a little salt, pepper and hot sauce with me. We both got our burgers served with red rice, which was pretty good too. The side had more flavor than the burger patty, to be honest. If it wasn't for the brioche bun, the shrimp and the pepper jack cheese, the whole burger would be lacking in the flavor department. What an amazing concept. I can say that the food quality is pretty awesome especially considering the buffet style restaurant. I've been twice now and both times the food was awesome and they don't pull back on anything here. The only issue is they do have some weird hours but for what you get and how they do things it's totally worth a trip during lunch. All the southern staples are here, like mac & cheese, collard greens, coleslaw, potato salad, hush puppies, etc. Don't forget to get some desserts too. I like their peach cobbler. A place like this can only survive in the south. I wish we had something remotely resembling Doc's back in NYC, but it'll never work. Barn Bites is every bit deserving of all good things said about them and their food, and if given the opportunity, you REALLY need to be sure and give it a try. My kids (highschoolers) are always down to try a new chicken sandwich.... but to be honest there's not many places you can take a sandwich that it either hasn't been before... or where it just becomes a sloppy mess. So I'm not sure what we were expecting, but Barn Bites was better than any expectation. We waited in a little bit of a line, maybe 7 people back. We ordered at 2:45pm. So, first thing I'm thinking is this is gonna take a while. But it will probably be some chicken thrown in a fryer (from frozen) and they'll throw sauce and something else on it. So it won't take long. But no. Right there in the window, they set the expectation. So think of the best chicken sandwich you've had. ChickFila? Zesto? Even BoJangles. yeah they're fast food places... ok so how about somewhere like Old Mill, or Liberty. This sandwich is better. WAY better. The folks in the truck were super nice. The strawberry lemonade was on point and fresh, with bits of fruit in it. This isn't any ordinary food truck.
