Came here to randomly and so thankful I did. This place is has been around for 27 years. It's located in Harlem and has that old timey feel and ran by two lovely people. They have a bar with soft drinks and wine. The vibe is warmth and romantic. I would recommend coming early to get a seat in the main area. If not you will have to watch the experience on a tv. If you like Jazz and history this place is definitely worth the visit.

I can't remember how I found Bill's. Maybe a deep dive online. Maybe one of the recent exposes written about him. But I got to reading about all of the jazz greats and jazz club owners we lost during COVID. So I thought I had to get out to Bill's to party. This little unassuming spot was a literal speakeasy. While it is now bring your own booze and only sells soft drinks and water, it's still hidden like a speakeasy. Simple to use google maps to get to the address, but we weren't sure which door to try (hint, it's the giant red one near the entrance). Billie Holiday was discovered here. This spot is small. Shotgun style. The first show is at 7. They say get there at 6:30 to get a seat, and that's probably fine, but we got there are 6:15 so we could have a seat front and center. The chairs are packed and cobbled together, some old wooden chairs, some old vinyl covered chairs, some high top chairs, a table here, a table there. Reminds me of the seats at preservation hall in New Orleans--not terribly comfortable, but they get the job done. Bill and the band were great. They played a few fast paced jazz tunes and a couple slower ones. Bill sang a couple of fun blues songs. The show lasted about an hour, maybe a little longer. At the end Bill spoke with us a while, told us the history of the place, made some jokes. He's a great guy. Tickets sold on their website. 30 bucks a ticket. As previously noted, no food or booze sold on site, but you're welcome to bring your own, while they sell water and soft drinks. They have ice and cups available. Everyone was so nice--the emcee and the woman at the door were awesome. Totally worth it. See all the jazz legends of Harlem while they are still here. They don't make 'em like Bill anymore.

Had this place on the to do list for awhile and when another event fell through, made reservations for this. Central Harlem location and definitely and old establishment. It seems to have been an older apartment, that they've modifed to a music venue with the main stage area and seating directly in front, then a back seating area with highchairs and tables. We got there early to get a good seat and I'm glad we did. The seating area in the back could be a bit tight and hard to see the musicians but the seats right up front were perfect! They had a coat check/hanging area so in the winter, no worries about lugging that around. I was impressed with the level of the musicians and the length of the show. It's loud in there so if you are not good with small spaces and loud noises, this may not be the place for you. They have an outdoor area and mentioned they are 420 friendly...so in warmer months may be worth the time to check that out. They also had water for sale, which was great as we forgot to bring some with us.

I've wanted to go to Bill's Place for quite some time now, and just got the chance to go with a friend of mine. The ambiance was comfy, it literally felt as if your friends who were professional musicians were practicing in their mom's basement! They do allow outside food and drinks but also have some sodas and glasses for $2 if you are interested. I would recommend getting there right when the doors open to get the best seat! Definitely a must do in Harlem.

This is a one of those "only in New York" experiences that I can't recommend highly enough. I'd wanted to come here for a long time, but only made it here last week. We came with a reservation, which was easily made via the club's website. Though they told us beforehand that doors would open at 7:45pm for the 8pm show, we got there at 7:25pm and were let in. We paid our entrance fees in cash as soon as we arrived, and were directed to sit where we liked. Since we were the first ones there, we scored seats right in front of the band. Bill and the band came in just after 8, introduced themselves, and then started the show. There were probably 20 or less people in the audience, making it for a delightfully intimate show. The club is also BYO, which I really liked, as there are so little BYO places that don't charge a fee in NY. After about an hour, the band concluded the show. Bill ended the show with a short explanation of the historic area we were in in Harlem, which used to be known as 'Swing Street'. Bill and the other host greeted everyone personally and thanked us for coming in after the performance. Overall, this was one of the best New York experiences I've had in a long time, and look forward to returning.

The price has gone up from $20 to $30/seat but it's still worth to price of admission for either the 8 or 10 o'clock seating on a Friday or Saturday night. Be the first in line and grab one of the 10 or so chairs just inches away from Bill leading the way on Sax, with a terrific bass, piano and drum player. Prepare to blast off with an explosion of live jazz within seconds of the quartet taking the stage. Feel free to bring your own libations to enjoy the ride in this historic Harlem Brownstone bottom floor.

We went to an early show. Harlem history. Where Billie Holiday was discovered. An original speakeasy.

Bill's Place is a true gem and makes a wonderful evening outing for visitors and NYC locals alike! I had the fortune of stumbling upon Bill's Place while researching the Harlem Jazz scene, and I'm so grateful I did! Finding a special place like this is exactly why the internet is the greatest thing ever - honestly. Jazz enthusiasts from around the world have found themselves in the tiny basement of a former Harlem speakeasy to witness the passionate, soulful, joyful magic of Bill Saxton and his house band. It will be the best $20 you ever spend in NYC! Make reservations online, head over with some cash, and enjoy the show!

Jazz lover's do not miss out! This is definitely a nice cozy jazz experience. It's wonderful for any occasion, not just a date. I made rsvp long ago because the weekends go quick. It's $20.00 per person. Cash. I'm not sure whether one can pay online. I honestly don't think so. Anywho its BYOB and snacks. We got lucky on the seating as we got to sit up front. The band is literally right there. They play for a while, definitely not a quick session. I didn't feel like Bill Saxton was rushing it. They had a guest female singer, which I personally loved. The overall experience was fantastic UNTIL Bill starting advertising his wife's book and brazenly started pointing out the tip jar. SMH.

I'm so happy the Internet brought me this place. I'm not from NY so I was looking for somewhere to take my date for live jazz that was affordable and chill. This was perfect. Bill's isn't fancy, it's cozy. Don't go there thinking you'll be served or waited on. Go for the music and the history of the establishment. Main thing, reviews tell you BYOB and the website says dry establishment so I'm here to bridge the gap for you. They ARE a dry establishment and they will not tell you it's BYOB on the site however, they just allow you to bring what you want. So bring some wine bring some snacks bring a picnic. Just clean up after yourself and be a good audience. It was the perfect date nite idea.

Let me be clear, the main redeeming aspect of this place is the talent on stage. The musicians were exceptional and deserved far better than the environment surrounding them. I ordered a scotch neat, something I'm very familiar with, and immediately knew something was off. When I politely flagged down a waiter, he responded with visible annoyance, as if I was inconveniencing him by being a paying customer. I explained the issue and simply asked if it could be checked or replaced. Instead of addressing it professionally, he walked away without a word, returned holding the bottle and my glass, and said, "this is what you were poured," before carelessly tossing the drink back onto the table. No apology. No explanation. Just attitude. It escalated from there. When I confronted him about his behavior, he denied it outright and then doubled down with an aggressive, confrontational stance, getting in my face and effectively threatening me. His exact words? "If I tossed your drink on the table, it would have been all over you!", and "Man, shut yo ass!" Completely unprofessional and unacceptable in any setting, let alone an establishment that positions itself as upscale. The manager's response was just as disappointing. Instead of addressing the behavior of his staff, he blamed me, asking why I "chased" the waiter and suggesting I should have gone directly to him. That's not how basic customer service works. I tried to resolve the issue directly, respectfully, and without escalation, something his employee clearly had no interest in. I was thinking if I talk to the waiter first, he wouldn't get in trouble with his manager. To make matters worse, the manager continued to defend the waiter rather than de-escalate the situation. At that point, it was clear this wasn't a one-off issue; it's a reflection of how this place operates. I paid my bill and left. For a venue that attracts world-class jazz talent, it's astonishing how low the standard of service is. This place is doing a disservice to the artists who perform there. I will never return, and I would strongly caution anyone expecting a professional, respectful experience to look elsewhere.

Unless you know about it, you can easily walk by, given it blends into the general Harlem cityscape, especially during the day. The vibe is poppin' inside and it is fed by the DJ on a stage in the back, playing Worldbeats, Afropop, Afrobeats, Reggae, Dance Hall, and Soca. They are setup for live bands here. The volume is high, but not uncomfortably or earsplittingly high. The people here are drawn to this vibe and energy. However, on the way there she said, "Yay, jazz in Harlem! This is awesome!" So... not wanting to disappoint her, not having been to jazz in Harlem for a long time, and not knowing where to go, I looked up some places on the internet, and we decided to go to a place at 449 Lenox Ave called 449 LA. Yes, that is a rather unimaginative name, but boy am I glad we went. The cover charge was $20, which may seem expensive, but included all you can eat (red beans and rice with baked chicken), and all you can drink (a choice among various soft drinks and sangria, which was not the best sangria I've ever had, but it wasn't bad, and I do believe it was spiked with brandy to yummy effect). The website where I found it says the cover is $10, which it normally is, but it was more that night because of the included food and drink. Call ahead to see what the deal is. The place itself is intimate -- I'd say about 18 people could actually be seated. But that Saturday night was brutally cold (25F, -4C, and it was very windy), so there weren't that many people there. We arrived at around 10:30pm, and there were about 8 other people. The service was very warm and friendly; when the band wasn't playing, the server stopped to chat with us asking where we were from and made other small talk. The music was GREAT. Small band: piano, drums, bass, sax, and a guy who invented his own instrument that was two kinds of saxes joined together that he blew into at the same time so that he was always playing a chord. No brass that night. A couple of improv pieces, a few standards. A couple of songs with vocalists. Not too loud, not too abstract, all of it very enjoyable. The band didn't mind if we took pictures (non-flash, of course) and we did. I would highly recommend 449 LA if you want to go to jazz in Harlem.

We became fast friends in this space filled with exuberance. Darius was a delight. He was also a big brother to me, making sure no one blocked my view of the performance. Thank you, Darius, that was so kind of you. I had such a wonderful time being in the company of all these amazingly talented people. It was a 6-hour dopamine rush that should not be missed. The dinner that was served was top-notch. I had the Sea Bass. My friend had the Golden Fried Chicken. Both meals were delicious. I had the ginger mocktail with rosemary and blueberries - so yummy I had two. Dessert was key lime pie - suffer we will. Our server; Vickie, was a delight and amazing to observe as she maneuvered around the performers and kept us and everyone around us well served and continually hydrated. Vickie is to be commended for how hard she worked throughout the evening. I made sure our tip reflected our appreciation of her. Put the Sugar Bar on your bucket list when visiting NYC. You'll leave there feeling you have experienced Heaven on Earth.

I was informed that you cannot make a reservation more than one week in advance. I made our…read morereservation as soon as the business opened one week in advance. The day before our dinner, I got an email, text, and telephone call to confirm our reservation. I asked if our seats were assigned to a specific table. I was told the assignments would be available the next morning. We arrived about 45 minutes before our reservation time. We were told that we could NOT go to the bar without paying the $20.00 per person door fee for the show. That night was open mic night. I was so eager to support this business because of its owners. We were also told we could NOT be seated early. We paid the money and waited. The tables in the bar area were reserved. When our reservation time arrived, in lieu of being seated where we could see the show we paid for, we were taken upstairs. I asked where the upstairs stage was located. There was NO stage. Instead, there was a 20 inch television hanging on the adjacent wall. We waited 45 minutes to watch a television upstairs away from the open mic show. I have included a picture from our vantage point. When I asked why we had not been seated in the open seats on the floor with the stage, I was told that some of the performers brought friends and our table was given to those individuals. Our money would not be refunded. I asked repeatedly why we were being moved and the hostess indicated that she did not make any decisions and the seats were going to be given to others. Those folks had not arrived and had not made any reservation. Thus, making a reservation was a waste of time. Then there was the food. I figured no one could mess up hot wings. I was wrong. The lemon pepper wings had no lemon and no pepper. It was just dropped into some butter. I had "buttered" wings. No seasoning except butter. Every member of our group remarked that the food was NOT good. I left 3/4 of the food on the plate. I was SORELY disappointed. Even sports bar have food don't string their customers along, make them wait 45 minutes, and then stash them away in heaven (i.e. upstairs). I could have watched better entertainment on Youtube. I will not be returning and I am telling everyone that I had bragged to about my upcoming birthday outing at the Sugar Bar that they should NEVER visit this place. No one cared that we were utterly disappointed with the trickery regarding the seating.
