It's clear that James is very passion about his work, but his conduct came across as unpleasant and unprofessional. For starters, he blatantly ignored my request to cut my hair with a straight razor. I understand that he is the professional in the situation, but if he wasn't going to consider my request, he shouldn't have asked in the first place. This was especially disappointing considering the result he delivered was significantly sloppier than previous haircuts I've received. However, my main concern was with his conduct. To put it bluntly, he was all over the place. Making obnoxious jokes, randomly singing rock and roll songs in my ear, dropping his supplies, and overall having an unfocused attitude. I understand that people have different energy levels and personalities, but even after explaining to him that I already had a rough day and wasn't in the mood to reciprocate his frankly exhausting energy, he continued acting brash and immature up until the end of the appointment, which made me feel very uncomfortable. I've seen multiple complaints about this individual online, but I still went into his chair with an open mind. However, after this visit I can say with confidence that I should have headed their warnings. Even though the haircut wasn't terrible, his abrasive, uncomfortable service was more than enough to make me never want to sit in that chair again. Customer service matters.

With that atmosphere I had no problem sitting behind three others waiting for haircuts. Once in the chair Mike asked me what I wanted. I explained and he said that sounded good. And he started clipping away, he stopped to make sure that I was OK and made some suggestions on a taper. At the end I got a very nice haircut, and have no problems recommending Mike, and I will actually come back next time I am in town, Granted the streets are not torn up from the upcoming construction project:)

All of the staff members give you their full attention when you are in their chair. I have recommended this place to all of my friends. While the haircut costs more than a typical one, it's worth every penny. I've never experienced a bad haircut from them which is a common thing that occurs in Bloomington if you go to cheaper places. Covid Note- they have hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes all around the shop. The staff and all guests were wearing masks. Strict cleaning protocols were clearly in place. You could learn who was having problems around town and who was visiting from out of town and where the catfish were biting. Those day are gone. Last time I had my hair "done" the woman that cut it tried to sell me some "product" when she finished the excellent razor cut. The beard trim was extra of course! After trimming my own beard this morning I decided to drive into town and try to get a hair cut. I called several salons and all offered me an appointment, sometimes a few days in the future. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted a barber pole and pulled into Fleener's. After a short wait while a local fireman got his son's hair cut I was perched in one of the two old Koken barber chairs. (They for sell for big money at antique stores) Hallie a very professional young barber who works with her father cut my hair. She has been cutting hair with her father for many years. The old man has been in business since 1973. They must be doing something right! She was nice to talk to and did a good job. The shop was clean and bright. They even had a big flat TV and a display case with old barber mugs, razors and other interesting stuff. They only take cash...so be prepared!
