I'll admit I'm being serenaded by Epic Cycles kick-a$# selection of bikes that would have people shaking their head and muttering "filthy hipster" under their breath. Thankfully my latest trip to Epic Cycles was to visit their service department. The guys were straight-shooting, easy to talk to and got the job done efficiently. Of course, in having my hand-me-down bike fixed I now need to learn to ride again. I think I'll be back to Epic to acquire some mad knee and elbow pads.

These guys do a great range of bikes, from mountain bikes, road racers, kids bikes, the popular fixie (so hot right now...) even portable folding cycles! They stock some of the more highly regarded brands like Specialized, Cannondale and Bianchi. I've got a road bike myself and have gone to Epic for a service before. For the uninitiated this might sound a little over-the-top, but modern bikes are quite sophisticated machines and require a bit of TLC. Their most basic tune-up is $49, but at the other end of the spectrum there's the 'Epic service', a complete overhaul of your entire bike, from derailleur to brakes, which has a hefty $239 price-tag. It might sound like a lot (hey, it's more than some car services) but it could be a good idea if you have a particularly advanced bike or are planning a big ride. The staff are really friendly and approachable; keen to chat even if you just want to have a browse. Roll by here if you are thinking of buying a new bike or just need accessories or a tune-up for your current ride.

I was after something that would suit urban environments while remaining sturdy, and they had a great range of bikes. They stock all kinds (from cruisers to mountain bikes) and accessories (biking gear and helmets, etc). But I wouldn't come here if you're after a fix gear bike because the store is more focused on biking as a sport. I test rode A LOT of bikes while there and the staff were really patient with me. When I still couldn't find the right fit, one of the staff suggested I try a men's bike, which was something I hadn't considered, but worked perfectly! I've since brought my bike back for regular services ($89 for every six months), and I've never had any problems with it.

He spent a lot if time sizing the bike up to suit my body and provided advice on riding styles and also how to adjust the bike in the future. This has to be one of the best choices we've ever made, they are incredibly professional and always looking to be that extra bit helpful each time. The last two occasions we've used these guys, my ski jacket size wasn't available so they would offer me a brand new jacket from rack that was leagues ahead of the hire gear. Obviously I gladly took them up on the offer. I would also recommend hiring the pro gear if you can get it, it's way better than the basic stuff plus about 10 times warmer.

Although I had to bring the car in quite early, 7am, I had some coffee and waited until the shops opened at 9am. I was able to run all my errands in Mt Ommaney Centre as my car was being serviced. This was the best part. Customer service is good and feels personal. They were friendly and clearly explained everything to me. This is one of the most convenient places I've ever had my car serviced at and I absolutely loved it.

The guys who work here are nice, especially Gavin, who is willing to explain even the tiniest insight to someone who doesn't know anything about bikes. He went through the bicycle lights and helmets with real patience. This is a bit of an old fashioned place with old fashioned ideas about business. They take your first name when your bike is given a service and they're good at getting the repair done on time. All in all a pretty good experience.

Wanting to see Australia and needing an adventure at the same time, I decided to go on a bike tour while the daughter was studying for upcoming exams. I was on campus several times and visited this shop. I hadn't brought my bike with me to Australia, so I spent quite a bit of time talking with the store personnel about a new bike and my plans once I had the bike. They all cycle tour as well and had a lot of information about the route I wanted to take (Brisbane to Sydney along the coast). Once the bike was selected and outfitted they put everything together for me and threw a few things in for good measure. They added things to my repair kit that I wouldn't have remembered myself like a couple of spokes and a tire boot. After everything was put together and I was ready to go, Jeremy sat down with me and wrote out several route options based on his experience from cycle touring to Sydney. He made suggestions that were invaluable and checked on my progress while I was en-route. He also found a bike shop in Sydney and called ahead to alert them that I would need the bike packed for a flight back to the states and then emailed me the contact information. The service in this shop is extraordinary. This is just something we don't find very often anymore. It is indeed very old fashioned service. They believe in going the extra mile and I was treated as if I were going to be a customer for life. By the way, I cycled a total of 616 miles (991 km) in about two weeks. Everything along the coast was beautiful and I would never have seen it all had I not been on a bike. Australia is the world's best kept secret.
