What's a "surefire" method to spot backpackers around town? By the free Adelaide city bikes (with the dumb looking, awesomely practical big front baskets) they're riding. Hey locals, prove my system wrong!
The council's free bike rental program is world-class, everyone who borrows a bike loves it, which reflects well on our city. Access the bikes from 7 nodes across the city (locations on the website). They're good quality, 3-speed bicycles and come with a helmet and a lock. Do take the bike back to where you got it from as they hold your driver's license!
If you've got the time, I highly recommend following the trail along the Torrens river 13km to Henley beach (turn left when you hit the ocean), which takes between 45min to an hour each way.
The bikes are extremely popular and are first come, first serve. But remember, your main competition are pack-backers who are probably sleeping off a hangover, so it's possible to get them with a relatively early start.
Happy trails. read more
