We wanted to try a fish and chips place in the area but they'd run out and closed down early. We sucked it up and decided to walk along the main strip (The Strand) to find a place for dinner. There's not many reasonably priced places in the area but we did find Bikaji Plaza, an Indian restaurant that does both North and South cuisine. They only do vegetarian dishes here.
We dropped in on a Saturday evening (around 7:30pm) and there was only one other group eating. Kind of shocking how deserted it was. That being said, our waitress was friendly and helpful with the menu, letting us know what my dad could eat with his dairy allergy. She even asked what spice level we wanted (medium).
The menu is split into chaat & snacks, North cuisine, thali, tawa & tandoor, South cuisine, Indo Chinese and desserts.
- Lassi mango ($4.00 NZD) - decent. Hilarious that it was served in a Cobra premium beer glass.
- Garlic naan ($3.50 NZD) - could have used more garlic flavour.
- Butter naan ($3.00 NZD) - reminded me of butter on toast, except it was on naan.
- Vegetarian jalfrezi ($13.99 NZD) - this was a mix of red onions, cabbage, green and red peppers. The sauce was tasty and had a good heat to it.
- Aloo saag wala ($14.90 NZD) - spinach with potato. Maybe it's because this was made dairy free for us (but everything was); I felt the aloo saag was lacking in depth and flavour.
- Onion tomato uttapam ($10.90 NZD) - the utappam (like an Indian style pizza) was tasty and came with a side of vegetable soup and two sauces. Good crispy batter.
Decent, reasonably priced Indian for the area. read more
