I am such a fan of Big Y-- when we left Western Mass, where Big Y originates from, I was heartbroken! I love their store brand products, which are of much better quality than most other generic products. Plus, their deli and fresh fried fish were unmatched in my opinion. I was crushed to have to shop elsewhere on the South Shore. And then, a small miracle happened-- Big Y expanded to the South Shore. I was finally able to make a trip over to Kingston within the past few weeks and have decided-- without a doubt-- that I am no longer going to be shopping at my local Shaw's, and will drive the extra distance to shop here. And here's why: 1) I love their produce section. Lots of healthy, fresh, fine quality produce. Displays are neat, clean, well-stocked. Very good representation, lots of variety. 2) their deli hot and cold bar. I love that I can pick up a meal to-go that actually tastes and looks delicious. They have fresh-made sushi (you can watch the chef make it), a hot bar, a wing bar (with other fried appetizer foods), and a salad bar. 3) as I said above, I love the Big Y brand "generic" foods. Their salsa is far better than most branded jarred salsa I've had! You can save money by buying store brand, but you don't sacrifice quality here at Big Y. 4) helpful staff: everyone I've interacted with from produce to seafood to butcher counter are friendly, helpful and most important: knowledgeable. Most grocery stores can't say the same. Their employees just don't care-- these do. 5) fast checkout. Despite long lines the day before Thanksgiving, I didn't wait long to check out. I think that's an excellent representation of their day-to-day. As I said, I was a big fan before, but this Big Y is actually even better than the store I frequented in Western Mass. Hey, Big Y! I am aware that your margins are being squeezed by your purveyors. I understand that some price increases are warranted. But "Caveat Venditor", Seller Beware. Shrinkflation is an insult. Slight of hand that this busy shopper fell prey to. In this case the product is Simply Done coffee filters 3.0 in. 200 count. They are @ 25% shorter. That is, the same amount of coffee in my maker now spills grinds over the filter, through the system, into the pot and into my cup. Someone made the decision to place this product on your shelf. Either you lack quality control or made the reasoned decision to rip me off. Stop & Shop is your neighbor, perhaps I give them an opportunity to compete? Again, Caveat Venditor! read more

I like shopping at this grocery store and there are a lot of them in the area. I've never had issues with their meat or produce like I have had elsewhere. Their self checkout is simple to use and they have someone in that area ready to help (and making sure no one is swiping anything). Only complaint is the size is small so they have less selection at times, but for the most part I find what I need. read more

I bought this half sheet cake and single cupcake from the bakery. The baker was super accommodating to my last minute order. She even wrote the words in my daughters favorite colors without me even asking! She must be a little psychic lol! I will not come here! This is such a cute store but the customer service by one sole manager is horrible! I come to this store weekly, I always do self checkout and pay by gc and debit this women makes a point to watch me every week. Watches no other just me I want to not go crazy and say it's a racial thing but it is! Last week was the final straw she stopped what she was about to do to come Watch me checkout my $20 grocery order! I'm very involved with the community and will make a point to tell people about my experience at this store! I most certainly think this behavior is atrocious! 1. They intentionally do not have hand baskets so you either have to go out the exit and get a huge cart and buy more OR walk around with just your hands. Incredibly anti consumer business model. 2. Food is expensive for the quality. read more

It's everything you need ina grocery store. The best cross between a stop n shop and Whole Foods. Multiple to-go food options if you need a meal to take home and they have a great selection of local companies. The harmony spring soda and Narragansett cheeses are exceptional. read more

I've been to all the grocery stores in the area, and this one has great selection and reasonable prices. I try and support the smaller chains because soon Amazon will dominate the food industry. If you care about free market capitalism and freedom of choice in this country. I suggest you do the same. Brothers in Duxbury is also great, although a bit more expensive. read more

I was excited to have a Big Y open in my area-I had not visited one since I was a kid living in Western Massachusetts in the early 90's. My mom went to sign up for a card at one of the new locations and was advised that she would not be allowed to write checks in any Big Y location because of a check she accidentally bounced- nearly 30 years ago. She has since owned a home for 20+ years and has excellent credit, yet the company is faulting her for something that even the US government would not do (You can file bankruptcy and have it forgiven from your credit in 7 years....) Even after that mortifying first visit, she attempted to visit again-this time with cash in hand. Even though the cashier could see she was paying with cash, not trying to cause any trouble, she had a "flag" on her account that required a manager to ring her up. It was 2 horribly embarrassing experiences that I find extremely hard to believe is an actual company policy. I will not be shopping at any Big Y location and will continue urging my friends and family to do the same. read more

Also excited to visit Big Y in Eastern Mass as we used to go to them in the western part of the state when I was a child. It's not that this place is bad it's just set up weird. You have to go all the way to the right to enter. They don't have entrances next to the exits and they don't have self service cashiers. We only had a couple of items and had to wait in very LONG lines for the manned cashiers that were open. We put the food back instead of waiting. Its like this Big Y is stuck in the 1970s and they haven't figured out in 2017 people don't really want to wait in long lines. I could be wrong on this one but I think they have this card thing you have to sign up for to get the lower sale price. Shaw/Star Market did away with this and Big Y should take the lead from them and do the same. Summary: Trying hard to like this store because it was my childhood super market but they need to get into the 21st century before I can go there again. read more

It's a nice change to go to a smaller store every now and then versus navigating a superstore like Market Basket. However, quality of food and selection didn't seem to be any superior. Also, gotta love the Duxburyites that shop here and look at you like they've never seen another human being before when passing in the aisles. Lol read more

Not the same as was when it was Hannaford. They jacked up the prices big time which has really turned away a lot of customers. The only day the store is worth going to is on Tuesdays since seniors get 10% off. The problem with turning Hannaford into a Big Y is Big Y is a smaller store with higher prices so this was virtually a downgrade over Hannaford. They remodeled the store which did little to add anything and they recently remodeled the whole parking lot which took like two months and made parking difficult. This store has a lot of work to do if they want to be half the store Hannaford was. read more

Last time I was in Hannaford in Kingston, MA birds were flying around and I never went back. There is no comparison to Hannaford and Big Y. I decided to try Big Y and I'm happy that I did. Big Y has more fresh and ready to eat food options than any of the area supermarkets. The fish dept offers many varieties of fish that I haven't seen in the other local supermarkets such as trout, fresh swordfish and when in season they had blue fish The quality is excellent and in most cases its wild caught and fresh with competitive pricing. They now have hand tossed pizza that is very good.A large pizza is huge. Grind your own fresh peanut butter and coffee. Fried fish and chips that taste really good. A decent salad bar and so much more. I haven't tried any of the meats yet but they look great. Great customer service too. It's worth taking a trip to check it out. read more

You are required to have a Big Y card to receive promoted discounts on products. You cannot get a Big Y card without them collecting your personal data, including your email, phone, drivers LICENSE number, address, etc. As a cash paying shopper, I find this policy to be invasive and inflexible without possible resolution from customer service. With so many shopping options near by, I would skip the Big Y. read more
