All glowing reviews??? Well, that won't do... Over 2 months ago I called about their TGIW program, "Thank Goodness It's Work" which I saw on their website (which is user-friendly I think). Or maybe it's Thank God It's Work". The site didn't say anything about it, except it's for people who have been out of work a long time but have significant barriers: Being out of work, being older, having a felony on record, etc. They can give you part-time PAID positions with a partner of theirs. Sounded like a godsend to me.
It said "Have your representative contact us." I called and asked the receptionist what does that mean. She said like a case worker or a social worker. I don't have one, as I represent myself. I'm a senior who's been out of work a long time, and that alone is a barrier. Actually both are strikes against me.
She said I need to talk to David Levison or Levinson, something like that. I left my name and number and he called. It sounded like he really wanted to help and asked about my background and skills. I said I don't have a case worker, so he said he just need someone to vouch for me. It's like a cross between a background check and reference. I said I used to volunteer at a non-profit, so he asked that this woman I used to work with to call HIM on my behalf.
When she called him, he seemed confused, saying they "are not looking for anyone now and they prefer to call references, not the other way around!" WHAT?
After that, I told her it's not a specific position but a program. I hadn't even met the man. She tried again, leaving a message for him. I also left another message, maybe two. I don't remember. The receptionist said he's "out" or "in a meeting". He was supposed to call me "tomorrow" but he didn't.
Another month and a half passes, and I get a call to come in and meet with him. I brought a resume also.
The program isn't what I thought it would be. It's just something 30 or 40 hours, not per week but PERIOD. It's a "one time" thing, a way to make "quick cash". He said an example would be like someone earning enough to avoid eviction. That's great, but in L.A., $300 or so is not enough to even pay half of the rent. Or a third!!
It may work for someone who has to earn enough to get their car fixed, or enough to pay an electric bill. But it's not working at different places, like a temp agency. They just don't have the funding, and the program is still pretty new. If all of this was stated on the web site, I wouldn't have wasted both time and bus fare. I got the message from our initial conversation that it's something you can even put on a resume. I don't agree, as just 3 days of work wouldn't impress an employer if you have been out of work otherwise.
And it was touted also as a foot in the door, a way to meet people and make connections. A brief job doesn't give you time to make connections and for them to get to know you and your work.
Also, it doesn't give me a good impression that it took months to get back to me. I had given up, thinking they decided not to help me. And I was asked for my e-mail and phone number twice, from 3 different people. This indicates poor organization or communication. "What was your name again? And your e-mail?" And I never got an e-mail anyway.
I initially wrote this 2/26/18 but didn't actually meet David until April! I don't know how to edit the date. So, the time line: I contacted them at the end of January. I am editing this 4/12/18.
