Big On Tokyo - Taro bubble tea and river market roll - Japanese Near Me - Little Rock, Arkansas

I came here for one thing and one thing only: bubble tea. If you've read my reviews for any length of time, you know that I have what might be considered an unhealthy obsession with bubble tea. The name can cover just about anything - from actual tea, to sweet teas, to creamsickle-in-a-cup - but the signature ingredients are: First, giant cup. Second, giant straw. And third, weird tapioca balls that pop up the straw when you're trying to drink it. Why I would have any sort of interest in, let alone obsession with, bubble tea is no mystery. Not only does it add hilarity, surprise, and texture to the otherwise uneventful act of drinking, but it also makes the drink more filling, and there is almost no feeling quite so satisfying as shooting one of those tapioca balls out of that giant straw and hearing it stick with a resounding *THWONG!* to a Stop Sign down the block. Seriously - but don't try that at home, kids. The Bubble Tea at Big on Tokyo is a slushy, something I've never had before, and so the tapioca balls were occasionally lightly frozen. It being a hot day, that hit the spot, but also since I ordered Peach - and I love the crap out of peach flavor - the fact that the slushy was particularly potent and flavorful (if overly sweet) was a big plus for me. Not my favorite, but certainly not bad, especially if you know what you're getting. On to the main event! Big on Tokyo is a tiny kiosk in the River Market that is a bizarre combination of elements - it's Japanase/Chinese/Asian(?) that offers a mishmash of all the different kinds of options we Americans expect to find at "Nondescript Asian Restaurant #..." I tried the Big on Tokyo because I only wanted Fried Rice with my BUBBLE TEA, but I also was Big on Hungry, so I rolled with it. First impression: the service was fast. Like, insanely fast. But also the rice was hot and the ingredients made a very good impression of being fresh and the serving was *huge.* I wouldn't worry about going hungry after ordering here. I also was really impressed with the service. The folks working here aren't super-outgoing "Hey! You you doin'? Let's talk about your day!" Chatty types. They're quiet, but very polite, quick, and super efficient, with shy smiles. When I went to take my food, I overbooked my hands, and wound up dropping my plastic fork on the floor. Since I was just heading home, I didn't think twice about it, but the gentleman at the counter very politely asked if I wanted a new fork, even to the point of asking twice when I mumbled an incoherent response the first time. He also gave me a bag, which they hadn't since I hadn't ordered my lunch to-go, which was a livesaver on the walk back to my car that I will always be grateful for! Like honestly, I know better than to order sushi from kiosks, I drank oceans of bubble tea 15 years ago and I'm burned out on it now, and I really do like my personal teriyaki recipe so my review is not going to cover any of those offerings from Big on Tokyo. Oh no, this review is about my one true love affair there, the fried rice. A few years back, I was car-less and staying in the river market area. One afternoon, faced with no food in the hotel room and a surfeit of time, I wandered over to the river market and decided to get the fried rice, since my Asian rice-stomach was grumbling. It honestly surprised me with how good it was! I thought it was a fluke but five years later I roll into town again and they still got it, so here I am telling this story. It sounds a little weird if you've never experienced it but their fried rice really captures the elusive quality of wok-hei, the smoky-something kiss of a screaming hot and well seasoned wok. Their fried rice is not the sodden soy sauce soaked generic takeout stuff. It does my little Hong Konger heart good to eat it. Just ignore the pickles and go straight to the shrimp, chicken or special Big on Tokyo fried rice. I'm not crazy about the beef they use but the shrimp or chicken is a solid choice. read more

Worst fried rice I have ever had. Zero flavor, very few ingredients. A waste of a meal. I will avoid this restaurant in the future.

So glad that BOT has survived in the River market for so long. I think that BOT was easier to like when there was less competition in LR. But frankly, it's pretty bad. I ordered the BOT bowl with an egg roll, and it was totally flavorless. Lots of rice, a few nuggets of meat, and a greasy egg roll. Meh. I really don't know why there are so many terrible reviews. I mean, it's not gourmet and it's not sit-down, it's a River Market stall where you can get a meal for $5-10. After going to these food-court type buildings in other cities, you appreciate this. You get what you pay for. The crunchy shrimp roll is good and if I'm starving I'll also get a side of fried rice to fill me up, which puts me at right under ten dollars. I used to go here when I lived in LR and went to school/worked downtown and the owner remembered me after I had been gone a year, asked if I had graduated, what I was doing, etc. very sweet. read more

Haven't been here in a long time must have been under new management the Service was horrible they don't even greet you when you get ready to order! Told the Guy what I wanted he walked off the lady came up and just kind of stood there smiling looking clueless and when I got my food it was not at all what I ordered and it didn't come with what it was suppose to come with. Hopefully someone else gets better service than what I did. My boyfriend got pizza from Jay's and it was excellent!! read more

Ordered lunch combo of chicken fried rice, spring roll, and a drink. I rarely write negative reviews, but this was honestly the worst fried rice I've ever had. Chicken was borderline undercooked and rice had zero flavor. Spring roll wasn't great either. Portion size was huge for the $. Only $7 something for the lunch combo. Won't return again. read more

I ordered the teriyaki chicken from here and it was inedible. Can't complain about the service since they handed me my dish less than a minute after ordering it. Once I sat down to eat, I saw why. It was precooked chicken that had obviously been sitting around for a while. They threw it on a bed of warmed rice and drizzled some vaguely oriental flavored sauce over it. I took a couple of bites and then threw it in the thrash and ordered something else from one of the other vendors. Don't bother with this place, they just don't care. read more
